What a sunny week we have enjoyed in Reception.

We have loved the arrival of some warm spring sunshine this week, enjoying plenty of time outdoors, listening to stories and even doing some of our work.

We celebrated World Poetry Day on Monday, reading poems and listening to rhyming stories.  We have also seen some fantastic writing throughout the week in our Garden Centre and construction area as well as in our newly created Story Station.

The children had a wonderful Tuesday afternoon.  At Music in Unison we had some children performing solos with their glockenspiels.  At Forest School the children worked together to design and build dens and were so proud of what they created!  Thank you Tara and Mrs Bevin for the best afternoon!

On Thursday we welcomed Caroline for Godly Play where the children continued their learning about the Easter Story.  Thank you for coming Caroline and we will see you next week for our Easter WOW Service!

In our literacy learning we have asked the children to use role play to act out our story, Silly Doggy.  They showed great understanding of the story and their acting skills were very impressive.

We introduced number bonds to 10 in our maths learning this week.  The children have been using their fingers, numicon and 10 frames to help them see how  10 can be made and are already keen to apply this knowledge.  We have seen some fantastic number sentences being written independently with the children showing great pride in their work.

Today we welcomed Mummys, Grandmas and Nanas into school for our Mother's Day Celebration.  The children were so excited to perform the songs which they have been rehearsing and it was a perfect way to show how special our mummys and grandmas are, along with the presentation of a tulip and a personal message from each of the children.  I was blown away by how the children performed and have worked so hard to make their singing and actions the best they could be for our special guests.   Thank you to all of you who were able to attend.

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

What another busy week for Reception!

In the build up to Easter we have continued our learning of the Easter story, considering how Jesus may have felt.  We have used a wonderful book called The Easter Story by Brian Wildsmith, which has told the story through the eyes of the donkey that Jesus rode into Jerusalem, which has given the children a different perspective to the story of Easter.

It has been a fantastic week for our maths.  The children have shown wonderful skills in subitising and their understanding of numbers to 10.  We have played bingo, sung songs and risen to the challenges set!

This week has been British Science week, with the theme of 'Growing'.  We set up a potion making station which has proven popular all week, with the children mixing colours, scents and sparkles to make growing potions as well as their own creations.  The children were excited to make their own mini cress heads with the seeds sprouting overnight!  The observations and language used by the children has been fantastic and I hope they are all able to try some cress in a few days time.  We also had some wonderful discussions about how we have grown since being born and thought about what we can do now compared to when we were a baby.  The class then worked in pairs to do some observational drawings of each other.

Friday was all about Red Nose Day.  We made sure we had fun whilst remembering why we fundraise and who needs it most.  The children loved wearing their noses – thank you to all who have donated.

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

What a busy time we have had in Reception this week!

We have continued our learning of the Easter story by hearing about Jesus' arrival in Jerusalem on a donkey.  The children showed great empathy when we talked about Judas and how his betrayal would affect Jesus.  We also took the opportunity to think about love, and what it means to us.

Tuesday was International Women's Day.  We were able to think about how women have challenged gender equality and we put ourselves in the shoes of women like Rosa Parks and Mary Anning to imagine how they may have felt.

This week the children have been learning about speech bubbles and how we can use them in our writing and storytelling.  We have seen some great examples of what the children would say to the bear in our book, 'Silly Doggy' and I have been so impressed with the children's use of their phonic knowledge in their writing.

The focus of our maths learning has been the numbers 9 and 10 with the children exploring different ways of making these numbers and using part-whole models.  They have loved coming to the front and being mini teachers to the class, telling us what they can see and explaining their reasoning!

This week the children used their forest school time to help in our outdoor area.  They worked so well together, moving stones and soil to create a small world area and fill up planters ready for us to grow some exciting plants over the coming months.

The children have really enjoyed their time this week with our music and dance teachers from Formby High.  A real highlight was to seem them all dancing 'under the sea'!  Our Music in Unison session was fantastic as well.  The children were captivated by Tara's flute and showed great rhythm on the drums!

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

We have had a fantastic week in Reception!

We began our week exploring pancakes and pancake day, enjoying a pancake treat on Tuesday with our friends!  It was lovely to hear the children chatting about their favourite toppings and what they were hoping to enjoy on their pancakes at home!

On Ash Wednesday we discussed Lent, and how Jesus suffered in the desert.  The children took their time to consider what they could ‘give up’ for Lent and we had many suggestions, ranging from Barbie Dolls to chocolate!

During our Maths learning this week we have recapped our understanding of the days of the week and comparing heights and lengths.  I have been so impressed with the children’s knowledge and application of this knowledge and how their reasoning skills are improving each week.

We were so lucky this week to have some amazing experiences with our music teacher from Formby High, a trip to Forest School, a music session with Music In Unison and our first dance session, also from Formby High.  The children were so enthusiastic and picked up the dance routine really quickly – we cannot wait to show you during our Mother’s Day Celebration at the end of the month!

Thursday was World Book Day and a huge thank you to all parents and carers for the fantastic costumes for the children.   They were so excited to share their favourite books with each other as well as their Year 6 buddies and we had a wonderful day, reading, listening to and creating stories.

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

It was so lovely to welcome the children back to school this week and hear all their news!

We introduced the children to our new topic of Animals from around the world with an exciting rainforest explorer role play area, which has been incredibly popular all week.  The children have been on adventures deep into the rainforest, spotting animals and creating some wonderful stories.

Our WOW service on Wednesday was focused on the meaning of Lent, explaining all the significant days that are coming up between now and Easter.  A big thank you to Anne and Caroline.

The children have impressed so much this week with their maths learning, showing enthusiasm and great reasoning skills when combining groups of numbers, using number lines and comparing heights.

We have also begun a new literacy topic, although the focus book is yet to be revealed to the children!  We were shocked to discover a mysterious creature had caused chaos in our school bin store, making such a mess.  This captured the children's imaginations and there were many discussions about who the culprit could be, with some fantastic suggestions and explanations.

The sun was shining for us at Forest School on Tuesday.  The children took bark rubbings, enjoying the trees and being out in nature.  Thank you Mrs Bevin!

We were also very lucky to have a music session with Music In Unison.  The children absolutely loved playing the different instruments, dancing and joining in with musical games.  We are so grateful to Tara for giving the children such a wonderful musical experience and we cannot wait until next week!

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

We cannot believe how time has flown this half term!

This week has been all about love as we explored Valentine’s Day. The children have shown incredible independent writing as well as wonderful creativity making Valentine cards for the special people in their lives.  We have seen cards exchanged between friends as well as them being taken home for family members with the children showing great pride in their work!

We have been learning about some common garden and coastal birds as we took part in the Big Schools’ Birdwatch for the RSPB.  The children have spotted birds coming and going from our outdoor area as well as looking and listening for them during their time at Forest School.  To mark Internet Safety Day on Tuesday, we took the opportunity to research the different gulls we may see using the internet.  We talked about staying safe online, remembering to always ask an adult before using the internet. If you would like any further information about this, please see our Online Safety section of the school website or click here.

In our maths learning this week we have been considering one more and different representations of the numbers 6, 7 and 8.  We have used dominoes to help us create number sentences and enjoyed a game of Kim’s game to remember the missing object and work out how many objects remain.  The children were great at recalling the missing object and excelled at the challenge!

During the children’s time outdoors, they began to create their very own ‘Drive through Ice Cream parlour’.  This has evolved over the week and by Friday was fully stocked with menus, ice cream containers, money and sprinkles!  It has been wonderful to see the children working together and having such fun with their ideas.

Love Reading have launched their 'top book picks' for this month. More, highly-rated children's reads, from a variety of authors for different age ranges, are shared with us all to enjoy.

I have also updated the Reception virtual classroom, which is attached below.

We hope you all have a lovely half term break and look forward to seeing you soon.

What a fun filled, busy time we’ve had this week!  We can’t believe it’s February already!

We began our week learning about Chinese New Year.  We listened to the story of the Jade Emporer and the animals and how people celebrate by decorating their homes.  The children have then spent time during the week making lanterns, dancing dragons, practising writing Chinese numbers and we enjoyed a mini-Chinese banquet to taste some traditional Chinese food!

On Monday the children arrived in class to find a packed suitcase and a message from Hattie Peck!  She was asking for the children to help her hatchlings pack for their final adventure.  We have seen some fantastic ideas of suitcase essentials and some even more fantastic independent writing from the children.  They have shown such pride in what they have achieved.

Our RE learning continues to learn about stories Jesus told.  We read the story of The Good Shepherd and considered how it feels to be lost or to have lost something special.  The children reflected on their own experences and then the qualities of a good shepherd and how God cares for us all.

This week we celebrated National Story Telling Week.  This gave us the opportunity to explore even more stories during our day!  The children then wrote their own stories using prompt cards and their own ideas which we recorded as a story map.  It was fantastic to then see the children independently creating new tales and adventures with their friends, documenting them in our big story book or mini books.  We have a class of budding little authors!

The children were excited to go to forest school again this week.  They played hide and seek, used natural objects in a maths challenge and were excited by further signs of spring which had appeared since last week.

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

What another busy week in Reception!

During our WOW service on Wednesday, Caroline told us the story of Daniel and the Lions, a story that we have also been reading and thinking about during our RE lessons.  The children gave thanks for bravery and the Bible stories that help us believe in ourselves.

The children have participated with such enthusiasm during our maths learning, where we have been exploring weight and capacity.  They have predicted capacities of various containers, tested their predictions and showed great understanding.  We set a challenge to see how many objects the children could fit in to a small container which saw them choosing a variety of small objects and great counting using 10 frames.

We were all very excited to go to Forest School on Tuesday with Mrs Bevin.  The children understood and adhered to the rules and expectations of sitting around our fire circle and explored the woods for signs of spring finding beautiful snowdrops and emerging bulbs.  A game of ‘1,2,3 Where are you?’ was the perfect end to a fun morning.

Our literacy lessons this week were focusing on Hattie Peck’s hatchlings and their birthday parties. We asked the children to decide which animal they would like to be and to write a shopping list for supplies!  We had parties for echidnas, snakes, flamingoes and penguins with a lot of cake being put on the lists!  The children are working so hard on their letter formation and identifying sounds within words, they show great pride in their work and we are so proud of them.

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

What another busy week in Reception!

We welcomed Caroline this week for Godly play.  The children were able to learn all about Jesus’ baptism in the river Jordan by John the Baptist and had the opportunity to baptise a doll for themselves.  They used special oil and named their baby before baptising them in a special font.

The children have been working so hard during our literacy lessons this week.  We have continued to discover more about the main character Hattie Peck, in our book 'The Journey Home'.  The children reflected on happy moments and loved sharing their memories and photos of outings with their friends and families.  It was wonderful to listen to their descriptions of happy times and we even had them planning return trips to special places with their friends!  The children wrote some fantastic sentences, remembering our finger spaces and full stops!  We were so proud of their hard work and determination.

Continuing with our space theme, we considered why we have night and day.  There were some fantastic ideas from the children!  We then explored what makes night and day, using the children to show us how the earth orbits the sun.  The children showed fantastic understanding and their interest in space continues to grow.  We have had letters from space, rocket and planet paintings and further adventures in our space station over the week. The children’s imaginations are ‘out of this world’!

This month's top book picks from 'Love Reading' have been released today. It shares exciting new story books from a variety of authors for different age ranges.

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

It has been a fantastic week in Reception!

We began our new RE topic relating to Stories that Jesus heard, introducing the children to the Old Testament.  We read Daniel and the Lions and the children remembered times that they had felt brave, documenting them in our floor book.

The children continue to enjoy our Space topic, spending time in our space station and using our small world Rocket to create wonderful stories and adventures.  We have even made our own giant rocket where many of the children participated in making it ‘The best rocket we have ever seen’.

This week we took time out to consider friendships and our reception and school family.  We made a class friendship web, where the children spoke about each other and what makes us a great friend and member of the class.  The children showed how thoughtful and caring they are and made us all feel very lucky to have such a loving group of children.  They were then inspired to create cards and pictures for each other, showing fantastic independent writing skills.

In our maths learning this week we have been so impressed with the children’s understanding of creating equal groups and the use of 5 frames.  They have been enthusiastic to answer questions and confident to explain their reasoning and thoughts.

Our literacy book, The Journey Home, introduced us to the main character, Hattie Peck, a hen who loves all eggs.  We learned about all the different animals that lay eggs, of which there were some surprises, and the children created their own list of favourites.

This week has seen the start of our whole class reading.  The children were keen to read the new books and over the week showed incredible progress as well as enjoying reading  with another child, supporting and helping each other.  On Friday afternoon we spent time with our buddies sharing a story.  The children really enjoy seeing their buddies and it was a fantastic way to end the week.

Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

We were so happy to welcome the children back into school this week.  We have enjoyed watching them catch up with their friends, refamiliarise themselves with the classroom and hear all about their magical Christmas memories. It sounds like they all had a fantastic time!

To introduce our new literacy book, ‘The Journey Home’, the children created a map of a familiar journey.  They did some incredible written work and we are excited to see what journeys we will go on!

The children were incredibly excited to discover our new topic, ‘Space’.  We have our very own Space Station within the classroom which has already seen some fantastic space exploration stories and ideas, as well as ‘Spacedough’, outer space drawings and our very own ‘Reception Space Adventure Log Book’.  It is wonderful to see the children so excited to learn more.

The weather may have been cold and wet but we have loved the opportunity to be outdoors, practising our ball skills, climbing and balancing as well as noticing changes in our outdoor area such as the green shoots on the daffodil bulbs. The children were fascinated to see their breath and pretended to be little dragons!
