What an “eggciting” week we have had, here in Year 1! We’ve enjoyed Easter crafts, animal art work and a visit from a very famous bunny.

This week, we had an extra special Collective Worship and joined our friends in Year 2 to lead our own Easter Service, at St. Peter’s Church. Year 1 enjoyed listening to the Story of Easter and so beautifully read aloud some Easter prayers, to remind us of the true meaning behind this special time of year. The children sang their hearts out and brought so much joy to those who attended the service and we could not be prouder of their wonderful contribution to the service.

In DT this week, we explored moving pictures and how we could bring our drawings, on paper, to life! We investigated different mechanisms and were so excited to apply what we had learnt to create our very own moving Easter cards. We demonstrated our school value of “Hope” and showed great resilience whilst creating our cards, as we tackled some tricky designs and concepts. During the design, make and evaluate process, Year 1 had a lot to consider and put so much care and thought into every step of the process. We think that our moving cards perfectly reflect all of the excitement and joy that the Easter period brings and we are certain that our friends and family will be just as proud of us as we are of ourselves!

As well as our “eggcellent” cards, Year 1 have had so much fun joining in with lots of other Easter activities, this week! Our Year 1 star bakers made some delicious nest cakes, carefully measuring, adding and mixing the ingredients, before turning them into the tastiest of nests. The children have also enjoyed creating their very own Easter decorations, working hard to decorate and create some fantastic 3D hanging eggs.

Adding to the Easter fun, Year 1 couldn’t believe their eyes when they had a visit from a very special bunny! The children could not contain their excitement when they saw the Easter Bunny hopping around our outdoor area. He was certainly feeling mischievous as he danced, played and explored our school grounds. We felt very lucky to have received some yummy treats from him too!

A huge well done for your hard work this half term, Year 1! We are very proud of our superstars and are looking forward to seeing what exciting learning the Summer Term brings.

Have the most wonderful Easter!

Yet another fantastic week in Year 1! As always, we have been extremely busy carrying out some exciting activities and taking on lots of new challenges. Our Year 1 authors have shone again and, this week, have been working hard to write their own versions of “The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth”, by Ellie Hattie. The children have worn their multicoloured thinking hats all week, to help them think creatively when writing their stories. Our Year 1 mathematicians have been wowing us with their knowledge of numbers to 50 and have been using their STAR vocabulary to explain their thinking. As well as this, we have taken a trip to the wild west in PE, when creating yoga stories, and we have enjoyed transforming into historians, to further explore the wonderful work of Florence Nightingale, in History.

In RE this week, we have continued to explore the Easter Story and have been learning about Jesus’ ascension into Heaven. We learnt how, after Jesus’ resurrection, he then ascended to be with God in Heaven and begin a new life. To help us understand this, we listened to “The Water Bug Story”, by Doris Stickney. The story taught us that water bugs make their way to the surface of the water, before then turning into beautiful dragonflies. After this transformation, they can no longer return to the pond and be with their water bug friends, however they now have an exciting and wonderful new life above the pond. We likened this to Jesus ascending into Heaven and no longer being able to return to Earth. To help us to remember this story, Year 1 created their own dragonflies, carefully decorating them with amazing colours and patterns.

On Monday, we celebrated “World Poetry Day”. Inspired by Michael Rosen’s “We Can” poem, Year 1 had so much fun writing their own versions. The children wore their multicoloured thinking hats to think creatively and they came up with some interesting objects and animals for their poem. They then shared plenty of giggles when deciding on the sound effects for each of their chosen objects and animals. From splashing puddles, to hissing snakes, there were lots of great ideas. Our Year 1 poets then got the chance to perform their poems for the class. The children put lots of effort into creating a really entertaining and engaging performance and we were blown away by the children’s confidence! There were plenty of interesting sound effects and even some actions to accompany the poems. It really was a treat to watch!

As always, well done for another wonderful week. We are very “eggcited” for a week filled with Easter fun next week! Have a great weekend.

What a wonderful week we have had, here in Year 1! From exploring numbers to 50 and revisiting tens and ones in Maths, to planning our own versions of “The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth” in English, we have had a very busy week. We have also loved being able to continue developing our Speed Stacking skills and had to use our school value of “Hope”, to believe in ourselves when learning the new 3-6-3 stack. As well as all this, we have had lots of fun celebrating two fantastic events this week; Red Nose Day and British Science Week.

In RE this week, we compared the Easter Story to the new life of Spring time. Making connections between the story and the life cycle of a butterfly, we likened the events of Good Friday, Jesus being laid to rest in a tomb, to the caterpillar making a chrysalis and resting inside. On Easter Sunday, Jesus rose, similar to the chrysalis opening and a butterfly emerging to begin its new life. We made our own life cycles to display the links between the events in the story and the life of a butterfly.

This week, Year 1 were thrilled to be celebrating British Science Week and they were truly bubbling with excitement, exploring this year’s theme of “growth”. Year 1 were presented with a rather unusual question, “Can we make bubbles grow?” Using our black thinking hats, we shared our own experiences of bubbles, where we see them, what they are like and how we make them. We then agreed that in order to explore this question, we needed to actually make some bubbles! We used plastic bottles that were cut in half and covered with a sock.  After dipping the bottle into fairy liquid and water, we then blew through the top of the bottle. We watched in amazement as bubbles grew from out of the sock! Year 1 had so much fun making bubbles and exploring how different socks, strength of blowing and the direction of the bottle affected the bubbles. Year 1 particularly enjoyed the bubble growing competition, for which we had to grow joint bubbles with our shoulder partner!

Well done for another great week, Year 1! Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday.

Year 1 - Spring 2 - Week 3

Year 1 have had another fantastic week, taking part in lots of activities and celebrating some special events! In Maths, Year 1 have been busy revisiting the topics of place value and addition and subtraction, to further deepen their understanding. In English, we have been focusing on comprehension skills and the children have been working hard to develop and apply their skills to take on some tricky challenges. Across the curriculum, there have been lots of other wonderful activities which the children have enjoyed taking part in. From a dodgeball tournament in PE, to celebrating the inspirational women in our lives for “International Women’s Day”, Year 1 really have been very busy!

In RE this week, we listened to “The Story of Easter” and learnt about the significant events of Holy Week, leading up to Easter Sunday. We learnt about Palm Sunday, The Last Supper, Jesus praying in Gethsemane, Jesus’ crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus. We discussed each of the events and used our green thinking hats to consider the changing emotions that Jesus would have experienced throughout this time. Year 1 then enjoyed making story wheels, to retell the events of Holy Week.

On Friday, we continued on our Young Leaders journey and began learning about perseverance. Year 1 were given a task for which perseverance was key! They had ten minutes to try to free a toy from a block of ice using only the resources in our classroom. When the time was up, we shared how we got on and discussed the following questions:

  • How did you feel at the beginning of the challenge?
  • Was the challenge difficult?
  • Did you feel like you wanted to give up?
  • How did you feel at the end of the challenge?

We understand that sometimes we must do things that are tricky, and we might feel like we want to give up, but it’s important to persevere. Perseverance means not giving up, sticking at it and being determined even when the task is difficult. We know that this is an important skill to have as a Young Leader to ensure that we can all work together with a positive “I can do it” attitude!

In addition to all of this, this week, we celebrated “Careers Week 2022”. To mark this ocassion, we had a very special, virtual visitor, who joined us in Year 1, to share her experience of being a nurse. We were very lucky to speak with Nurse Natalie, who answered lots of our questions about what it is like to be a nurse. We loved hearing about what her jobs involves, how and why she became a nurse and her favourite things about the job. The Q&A certainly inspired lots of us and many Year 1 children said that it is a job they would like to do.

Well done for another fantastic week, Year 1! We can’t wait to see you back in the classroom on Monday. Have a lovely weekend!

Year 1 - Spring 2 - Week 2

Date: 4th Mar 2022 @ 2:49pm

WBD - 4.3.22.jpeg

Yet another wonderful week here in Year 1, filled with so many exciting learning opportunities! In Maths, we have been learning about fact families, using our knowledge of part whole models, to create addition and subtraction calculations to match. We have thoroughly enjoyed continuing to explore, “The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth”, by Ellie Hattie, taking the time to read this exciting new story by torch-light and creating some fantastic pieces of writing based on the story, including a “Missing” poster, to help Timothy and Oscar find Teddy. As well as this, Year 1 have loved playing “Dragons and Fireballs”, to help them develop their dodgeball skills, learning about Florence Nightingale as part of their Young Leaders Award and devouring some delicious pancakes, to celebrate Shrove Tuesday!

In RE, Year 1 began their new topic, “What can we learn from the Easter Story?”. We began by listening to the story, “Brenda’s Boring Egg”. We discussed the importance of the eggs and how excited the mummies in the story were to meet their ducklings. We then used our black thinking hats, to connect the story to a Christian festival where eggs are an important symbol. We learnt how an egg is a symbol of Easter because it represents new life and “The Story of Easter” says that after Jesus had died, his body was put into a cave called a tomb, before he then came back to life. The egg represents the tomb, and the animal that comes out of the egg represents Jesus coming back to life. We discussed that spring, the time of year we celebrate Easter, is a time when plants and flowers grow. There are many signs of new life including buds, frog spawn, lambs, chicks and daffodils. We then enjoyed going on a Spring walk with our friends, to see if we could spot any signs of new life for ourselves.

On Thursday, our Year 1 classroom was transformed into a magical land filled with storybook characters, in recognition of ‘World Book Day 2022’. The Reading Pixies from The Enchanted Reading Forest were extremely excited to celebrate with us for the first time! Year 1 had so much fun dressing up as their favourite storybook characters and put so much effort into bringing the stories to life. We all enjoyed a front row seat at “The TSP Character Catwalk”, on which we showed off our wonderful costumes and told everyone about our characters. We enjoyed writing character descriptions, taking the time to think carefully about some interesting adjectives that we could include. To ensure we never lose our page at story time, we made personalised scratch bookmarks, which we can’t wait to use! Of course, throughout the day we enjoyed sharing and listening to some of our favourite stories and we even enjoyed a yummy hot chocolate, to make it an extra special story time. It really was a fantastic day!

As part of ‘Fairtrade Fortnight 2022’, Year 1 have been working hard to deepen their understanding of Fairtrade and explored the question, ‘Why should we buy Fairtrade Products?’. Together, we researched Fairtrade and found out the important meaning behind the symbols that we often see on products in the shop. From what we had learnt, it was evident there are so many reasons why buying Fairtrade products is a good idea. We then had lots of fun making Fairtrade lemonade, using Fairtrade ingredients. Our tasty creation was a delight to drink and it was so nice to know that a fair payment would be going to all those involved in making the ingredients!

Well done for you hard work this week, Year 1! It has been an amazing week filled with lots of learning, smiles and laughter. Have a great weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday!

Date: 25th Feb 2022 @ 3:28pm

2D7BDAA9-EC12-465C-9B79-2C6BBB6650E3.jpeg

Wow, what a wonderful start to our new half term! Year 1 have returned after the break, ready and raring to go and, as always, have been very busy. We have been learning about subtraction and taking on some more challenging problems, involving crossing 10, in Maths. In English, we have begun to explore our new text, “The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth”, by Ellie Hattie, and have worked hard to create some fantastic writing about the events and characters in the story, being sure to use our super sentence features and, of course, our special joining word “and”! Amongst all this, we have loved developing our ball skills in preparation for our new unit on dodgeball, in PE, and have been very excited to continue on our Young Leaders journey.

This week in RE, Year 1 listened to the story of “When Jesus Turns Water Into Wine”. We thought about how it would have felt to have witnessed this miracle and the significance of what Jesus did. We discussed that Jesus could perform miracles because he was God’s son and that made him special. We looked at lots of paintings of this bible story and noticed that the water jars from which Jesus poured the wine, were in all of the paintings. To help us to remember the story, we then used salt dough to make our own water jars, which we are going to decorate with colours of celebration and symbols that represent hope, happiness and love.

As part of our Young Leaders Award, we continued to explore the effect of kindness and how it only takes a small act of kindness, for it to spread a long way and have a really significant impact! We used our yellow thinking hats to reflect on times when we have experienced kindness and been kind to others. We enjoyed sharing our own experiences and noticed that whilst we discussed them, it made us all smile and feel happy. This led us into a super discussion about how kindness has a long-lasting effect and the most important part of being kind is for the impact it will have. We then came up with a fantastic idea to spread kindness in secret. We wrote positive messages and kind words onto some green hearts and attached them to some yummy chocolate bars. The next part of our mission will involve us sneaking around the school and hiding the tasty treats for teachers to find. Although the recipients of our gifts and notes won’t know it was us, we agreed that it made us feel good to spread kindness, knowing that we made someone else smile! Big or small, visible or invisible, an act of kindness goes a long way and will always make all people involved feel good. As Young Leaders, we need to be the ones to inspire and teach others to be kind!

Well done for such a wonderful first week back, Year 1! Have a lovely weekend and we will see you on Monday.

Date: 11th Feb 2022 @ 2:50pm

ADAD7036-9A31-41CD-B673-A4CD3EAB6213.jpeg

What a fantastic week to bring our half term to an end! As always, Year 1 have been working incredibly hard and have continued to explore number bonds, using their knowledge to solve missing number problems. The children have also been developing their subtraction skills, using a variety of mathematical resources to solve problems. Year 1 added the finishing touches to their wonderful stories, in which they tried hard to include a variety of text features, such as question marks, exclamation marks and adjectives. We certainly have some budding authors in our class! Amongst all this, the children have had so much fun celebrating Computing and Safer Internet Day and they enjoyed letting their creative juices flow, to experiment with their drawing skills and create self-portraits.

In RE this week, we learnt about the story, “Jesus Feeds the 5000”. We thoroughly enjoyed listening to the story and were amazed at what Jesus was able to do. Using our green thinking hats, we discussed how the little boy who gave his loaves and fish to Jesus must have felt seeing Jesus perform this miracle. Year 1 used some fantastic adjectives to describe his emotions such as “shocked” and “amazed”. To help us remember the story, Year 1 then created their own “packed-lunches”, filling their paper bags with the correct number of fish and loaves, before writing the all-important phrase on the bag, “Jesus fed 5000 people with 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread.”

Our Year 1 scientists were in a for a rather smelly treat this week, when they received a delivery of poo samples from Chester Zoo. Unfamiliar with the diets of polar animals, Chester Zoo asked Year 1 if they could examine the samples and identify whether the animals were a carnivore, omnivore or herbivore. The children couldn’t wait to get stuck in and used their black thinking hats to help them know what to look for. In search of bones and plants, Year 1 carefully picked apart the samples, before classifying the animals using a tree diagram. They certainly won’t be forgetting that lesson in a hurry!

On Tuesday we celebrated Safer Internet day by following Kim and Lee on their adventure to find out how to be safe online. After meeting Sid the Superhero, the children created their own “Protector Badges”, which displayed some important top tips for staying safe online. They then had lots of fun making their own internet safety mascots, which they brought to life using the Chatterpix app. If you would like any further information about internet safety, please click here, to see our Online Safety section of the school website.

A huge well done for not only another wonderful week, but a fantastic half term! As always, it has been a pleasure to watch Year 1 work so hard and continue to enjoy their learning journey. We wish you all a lovely half term and we look forward to seeing you after the break!

Year 1 - Spring 1 - Week 5

Date: 4th Feb 2022 @ 2:46pm

DFA489A1-C56D-4C4B-8675-3EA032A98C0D.jpeg

It has been a great week, here in Year 1! We have been busy transforming into authors, to write our own versions of “The Lion Inside”, by Rachel Bright and Jim Field and in Maths, we have been practising our number bonds and our addition and subtraction skills, solving a variety of problems. We have also enjoyed learning some new gymnastics shapes such as tuck, straddle, pike and dish, in our PE lessons. The fun continued when Year 1 celebrated Chinese New Year on Tuesday, for which they enjoyed making their own fortune cookies. The children also had a wonderful afternoon celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, making their own commemorative plates.

In Re this week, we listened to the bible story, ‘The Stilling of the Storm’. We discussed the characters and how they reacted to the events in the story. We identified that Jesus would have experienced very different emotions to his disciples and used a double bubble thinking map to make comparisons between Jesus and his disciples. We learned that Jesus was calm during the storm and expected the disciples to have faith in him. His ability to calm the storm showed the disciples how truly special he was.

Year 1 had a magical start to their week and, on Monday, returned to the classroom to find our reading corner had been transformed into an Enchanted Reading Forest. Twinkling stars, a tiny fairy door, a mysterious note and lots of storybooks could be found beneath the fairy light canopy. Year 1 could not contain their excitement and were eager to read the note that had been left for them. The note explained that our very own Reading Pixie had travelled through the door from “The Enchanted Reading Forest” and delivered us some of their favourite books. In the wood, lots of Reading Pixies have lost their sparkle and are no longer able to fly. Reading helps the pixies feel better and in order to help them to get their sparkle back, we must read lots of stories. Year 1 love reading and they are certainly up for the challenge. Throughout the week, the children have had the pleasure of picking one of the special storybooks to read at the end of the day and we can’t wait to read lots more stories next week. In the meantime, Year 1 are very excited to read even more stories at home, to make sure they continue to help the pixies, even when they aren’t in school.

As always, well done for your hard work Year 1! Have a wonderful weekend.

Year 1 - Spring 1 - Week 4

Date: 28th Jan 2022 @ 2:29pm

5A13F95C-AF5E-4701-9592-7C7AB8396986.jpeg

Yet another fantastic week in Year 1! We have been busy mathematicians this week and have been comparing and ordering numbers, using our STAR vocabulary “greater than”, “less than” and “equal to”, to explain our thinking. After exploring the story in great detail, we were thrilled to finally find out what happened at the end of “The Lion Inside” and we certainly weren’t disappointed! Although many of us were shocked by the ending, we were very happy with the outcome and have enjoyed writing from the point of view of Lion and Mouse to describe their new friend. In addition to this, Year 1 have loved transforming into gymnasts and creating some fantastic balancing sequences in PE and have enjoyed exploring the diets of animals to help classify them into carnivores, herbivores and omnivores, in Science.

In Re this week, we listened to the story of ‘The Calling of the Disciples’ and learnt how Jesus chose his first disciples, Peter and Andrew. In the story, Jesus asks Peter and Andrew, two fishermen, to take their boat out and to drop their nets. After a day without luck, Peter and Andrew are certain they won't catch anything but do as Jesus asks. Suddenly they find their nets bulging with so many fish they can hardly bring them aboard. The fishermen insist Jesus is 'too good for them' but then, Jesus asks the fisherman to follow him. Helping us to remember the story, we had fun using drama to retell how Jesus chose his first disciples. There were some excellent and very entertaining performances, which demonstrated Year 1’s super understanding of the story!

Year 1 were extremely excited to take the first steps on our Young Leaders Award journey this week! On Friday, we began the first part which focuses on kindness. To begin our session, we used adjectives to describe what cotton wool feels like. When feeding back to the class, we realised that all the adjectives being shared were all very positive. We then repeated this activity but this time, we described sandpaper. We immediately realised that the words we used to describe the sandpaper were the opposite of those we used for the cotton wool and made the connection that these adjectives would be associated with things that aren’t so nice. Next, we imagined that cotton wool was a type of word and shared with our shoulder partner some “cotton wool words” that would make someone smile. Some of the words that were used included “well done”, “amazing” and “fantastic”. We then shared with the class the kind of words that we would call “sandpaper words”. Year 1 answered the question, “what type of words should we use and why?” Using their yellow thinking hats, Year 1 reflected on their own experiences to help them to answer this question. Everyone said that we should be using only cotton wool words and there were so many reasons why, including because they make people smile and they are kind! Year 1 made their own list of cotton wool and sandpaper words and wrote about the importance of using only kind words. As Young Leaders, it is important we understand the significance of our words because others will only want to follow a good role model who is kind! It was a brilliant session to begin our Young Leaders Award and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for us next week.

Well done for a wonderful week of learning! Have a great weekend and we will see you on Monday.

Year 1 - Spring 1 - Week 3

Date: 21st Jan 2022 @ 1:52pm

F0F90218-62A1-4B08-BBC9-18D12B2CB0A5.jpeg

We have had a wonderful week in Year 1! As always, the children have been working hard, taking part in lots of exciting activities. In English, we have continued to explore “The Lion Inside” and have enjoyed getting into character as Lion and Mouse, to help us think of some fantastic questions for each of them. We have been busy developing our understanding of place value in Maths and have been practising one more and one less and comparing numbers. On top of this, we have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the properties of everyday materials and going on a scavenger hunt to find objects around the classroom with different properties, in Science. We were amazed at the variety of materials and the many properties each of them have!

This week in RE, we began our new unit, ‘Why is Jesus special?’ We enjoyed watching a video montage of scenes from Disney films that featured some familiar faces! We thought carefully about the common theme that ran throughout the video and soon realised that all the characters were friends. We were excited to see so many of our favourite characters and we thought carefully about why the characters made such good friends. We then had a fantastic discussion about friendship and considered the following questions:

  • How do we make friends?
  • Who are our special friends?
  • What makes a person a good friend?

From the discussion, we realised that the qualities that make a good friend are the reasons why our friends are special. We used our green thinking hats to consider how our friends make us feel and discussed how all of the qualities that make our friends special make us feel only positive emotions. We are looking forward to finding out if Jesus chose his disciples based on similar qualities!

Year 1 were extremely excited after having taken part in the launch session for their ‘Young Leaders Award’ this week. Taking us on our journey to achieving the award is Gracie, who will help us to learn what being a leader means and help us to gain the skills to become one. Year 1 learnt that throughout the award they will take on challenges focusing on kindness, perseverance and teamwork. Our final challenge will require us to take action and carry out a project to help us to serve our local community. Year 1 can’t wait to get started on developing their leadership skills! We’re excited to be involved in this programme which has been designed and written by the Archbishop of York Youth Trust. For more information visit www.abyyt.com

Well done for another week full of hard work and lots of fun. Have a lovely weekend!

We have had a fantastic week with our Year 1 friends and have enjoyed lots of exciting learning opportunities. We have been busy learning about tens and ones, representing numbers using Dienes in our Maths lessons. We have also enjoyed exploring our new text, “The Lion Inside”, by Rachel Bright and Jim Field, in English. On top of this, we have had so much fun taking part in our dragon themed PE lessons, which helped us to develop our sending and receiving skills, whilst having to carefully transport our dragon eggs to different locations.

In RE, Year 1 have been learning about Epiphany, the festival celebrating the visit of the Wise Men to Bethlehem, to see Jesus. We learnt how the Wise Men visited Jesus after the shepherds and we discussed the different gifts that they gave. This inspired us to think about the gifts that we received over Christmas and we used our yellow thinking hats to reflect on the gifts that meant the most. Connecting our discussion to our “invisible gift” activity before Christmas, we shared the invisible gifts that we had given or received during the festive period. Wearing our green thinking hats, we discussed how these special gifts made us feel and we soon realised that these are the gifts that mean the most to us. They weren’t bought from a shop and wrapped up, they were given from the heart and are meaningful. We enjoyed recording the many different invisible gifts on our own paper presents in our RE books.

Year 1 had a rather surprising start to their week, when they entered the classroom to find muddy paws prints, clawed displays and a terrible mess! They could not believe their eyes and there was a real buzz of excitement as we investigated the crime scene. Year 1 decided to use their black thinking hats to discuss what we knew from looking at the clues. There were fantastic ideas and lots of the children made connections to prior learning and their own experiences, to identify the kinds of animals that could have been responsible. The claws and large paw prints, alongside tiny footprints and a sprinkling of cheese, meant that Year 1 concluded the mess had been left by two characters from a story that had been left amongst the debris, “The Lion Inside”, by Rachel Bright and Jim Field. We have enjoyed spending the week exploring the story to find out more about our special visitors and we are eager to find out about the journey they have been on together, before escaping from their book!

Well done for another week full of hard work and lots of fun, Year 1. Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday!

Welcome back and a happy New Year to you all! It has been so wonderful to see our classroom filled with smiling faces again and we have enjoyed lots of activities to kickstart our new term. In Maths, Year 1 have been busy learning about tens and ones and have been learning how to use Dienes to represent numbers. It has been a pleasure to have been able to share and listen to everyone’s Christmas news and Year 1 have worked hard to create some super writing all about their festivities, in English.

In Collective Worship this week, we began exploring our new monthly value of “Wisdom”. We used our black thinking hats to explore and discuss the meaning of this month’s value. A common idea that the children shared was that owls are thought of as wise and are often used as a symbol of wisdom. We used our yellow thinking hats to reflect on stories that we have read that include owls and made the connection with our value, thinking about the wise words that the owls in the story often shared. We then enjoyed creating our own “Branches of Wisdom”, on which we stood our carefully decorated paper owls that shared our own wise words, for everyone to see.

We had a rather creative end to our first week of term and put on our multicoloured thinking hats to begin creating tiles for our class mural. Inspired by the patterns and symbols on our school building, Year 1 designed a tile to represent our wonderful school. They thought carefully about what school means to them and took their time to choose designs unique to Trinity St. Peter’s and that captured what they enjoy about school. Year 1 were very excited to use modelling materials to bring their tiles to life and used a variety of skills to cut, mould and add texture to clay to create their tile. It was fantastic to see our superstar artists at work and we can’t wait to see how wonderful the tiles look when they have been painted!

Well done for a great start to the Spring term. We are so excited to see what our new term brings. For more information on what we will be learning about this term, please click here. We hope you have a lovely weekend!

What an amazing start to our new school year! We have had the most wonderful few days getting to know about our new year group and settling into our new classroom.

We had a very exciting start to Year 1, when we discovered an unusual package tied to balloons which was tangled in our pirate ship! We were eager to find out what was inside and were thrilled to find out it was Disney Pixar’s “Up” DVD. On further inspection, we realised a note was attached to the package. As we read the note, the strange delivery began to make sense and it became clear we had a very important job to do! The characters from the film, Carl and Russell, were in a little bit of bother and asked us to use our school values to complete some special challenges. For each challenge we could complete, they would win a balloon which they could tie to their house to make it float again. Year 1 were very excited about their mission and could not wait to get started!

Over the past few days, Year 1 have had to use their school value of “Serve” and, just like Russell and Carl, had to share ways in which they follow in Jesus’ footsteps to respect others and the world around us.

They used our school value of “Hope” to create some wonderful adventure books that are now full of their hopes and dreams for the future.

Finally, they brought the week to a close using their school value of “Imagine” to create some beautiful cloud pictures. Ellie and Carl loved watching the clouds and making them into pictures in the film and we are sure they would love to see the artwork we have created, inspired by one of their favourite activities.

Each mission was completed to a very high standard and we are confident those balloons will be on Carl and Russell’s house in no time!

It has been a real pleasure to welcome the children back this week. It has been such a wonderful start to the year and we look forward to this year’s learning journey.

Well done for all of your hard work this week, Year 1! We can’t wait to see you on Monday. Have a brilliant weekend!
