Busyweek.jfif

We have started this term with a very busy but fantastic week!

Our week began with a look at our new Collective Worship monthly value of peace. We took the time to think about what peace looks like and times when we feel at peace. In Religion, we looked at how news is spread and how good news was spread for God. We then researched different artistic styles of angels, chose our favourite and then created our own.

In Maths, we continued our topic of addition and subtraction. We looked at ‘subtracting a one-digit from a two-digit number’ as well as ‘subtracting a two-digit number from a two-digit number’. Whilst we found this challenging, it was really fun to delve into and try our absolute best! We also did some team maths where we had a friendly competition of ‘Hit the Button’ and ‘Spell the Number’.

In Science, we started to investigate and identify materials and their uses. We put on our thinking hats to discuss how each material has various uses.

There is no doubt that this week has been a busy one, as we filmed our Kindness Week Video. From gelled hair to 90s plaits, our hairstyles brought the 90s theme to life as we sang, danced and raved throughout the week to some classic 90s songs. We can’t wait to see our amazing efforts be brought to the big screen next week when our video premiers.

After such a busy week, make sure you get some rest Year 2 and get ready for our Kindness Video premier next week!

Year 2 Reminders:

  • PE days will remain the same on a Monday and Wednesday.
  • Don’t forget to bring reading folders in on a Thursday every week.
  • Please note that children may bring a small, healthy snack, such as fruit or a cereal bar, to eat at playtime. Please note that fruit or vegetable snacks are provided each day in school.

How time has flown!

We have had another fabulous week in Year 2 and have ended the half term on a high!

In PE, we practised our underarm throws and catching skills. We then ended our lesson by completing four 4 laps of our mini marathon. We were wrecked by the end, but what a great achievement! We absolutely loved our visit from Unite, Formby for our Self-Defence session this week. It was incredible and taught us some basic self-defence skills including releases from ‘grabs’.

In Music, we continued our theme of ‘African Music’ and looked at ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’. We listened very carefully and described what instruments and voices we could hear.

In Maths, we continued our topic of ‘addition and subtraction’ as well as revising our number bonds to 10 and 100. We started the week by looking at ‘adding 2-digit numbers across a ten’. Then we began to look at ‘subtracting 2-digit numbers across a ten’. We found this challenging but really enjoyed learning new and exciting maths.

We created our very own ‘Online Safety Leaflet’ in Computing this week. We had a big discussion about how we use the internet and how we can stay safe online. We then used these fantastic ideas and tips to put into our very own leaflet.

We also loved having a boogie at the annual TSP Disco, with its spooky theme! The glow in the dark theme made it more exciting! We played musical statues, dancing to the ‘Monster Mash’ and even got to eat some spooky sweets at the end! It truly was an incredible event, thank you to all involved.

Year 2's Virtual Classroom has been uploaded onto Tapestry if you wish to access this.

Year 2, you have been an absolute delight to teach this half term and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the term, and year, has in store for us. From all of us here in Year 2, have a wonderful and well-earned rest.

Year 2 Reminders:

  • School will return on Monday 31st October at 8:40am.
  • PE days will remain the same on a Monday and Wednesday

hello yellow.jpeg

What another brilliant week we've had in Year 2!

We began the week with Hello Yellow Day! We created flags with messages of positivity, kindness and hope which were then used to create a ‘Positivity Pathway’. We had a fabulous time walking through the yellow path and reading all the gorgeous messages that everyone left.

We had an absolutely fantastic PE lesson. We became masters of dribbling and toe taps! There were definitely some footballers in the making! We also started with a friendly competition of ‘Hats’ and ended with ‘Sharks’. We continued this into our next PE lesson where we practised our strikes and ability to stop the ball.

In Music, we continued our song ‘Hands, Feet and Heart’. This week, we became composers and added our own section to the song. We worked in teams or ‘bands’ to create our song and really impressed the Year 2 team.

In Maths, we continued our topic of ‘addition and subtraction’ as well as revising our number bonds to 10 and 100. We started the week by looking at ‘adding 2-digit numbers’. Then we began to look at ‘subtracting 2-digit numbers’ and even had a look at column addition and subtraction! We will be continuing this topic next week and how we can add 2-digit numbers across a ten.

We loved flying sky-high this week to look at aerial photos of countries from around the world. From this, we had the challenge of identifying physical (natural) and human (man-made) features in pictures of China, Croatia and many more! Next week, we will start looking at creating a key for a map.

We continued to look at more artwork created by Giuseppe Arcimboldo; this week was ‘The Cook’, ‘Earth’, and ‘Water’. We explored all the animals that had been used in it and how it related to their title. We then created our own animal portrait using oil pastels.

We ended the week by coming into school in our pyjamas in support of  Alder Hey and the NHS. We loved seeing everyone in their cosy pyjamas and slippers at school! We even put on a Pyjama Runway with everyone getting the opportunity to show off our wonderful pyjamas and moves. We had some judges to score us of of 10 - we had great fun!

What another amazing week we've had in Year 2!

We started the week with a hands-on PE lesson. We practised our hand control with balls, practised our rolling skills and then even tried our own version of bowling. I think we have some professional bowlers on our hands!

In Music, we continued our song ‘Hands, Feet and Heart’. This week, we made our song a duet! Half of the class used glockenspiels to play the backing rhythm of the song whilst the other half played the verses and the chorus. Then, we even attempted to sing along! The whole Year 2 team were super impressed with our multi-tasking and teamwork skills.

In Maths, we started our new topic of ‘addition and subtraction’ as well as revising our number bonds to 10 and 100. We started the week by looking at ‘Related Facts’ and how we could work out ‘30+70’ by knowing ‘3+7’. We then used this knowledge to look at number bonds to 100 before starting addition and subtraction problems to 20. We ended the week by adding three 1-digit numbers and using our number bonds to help us.

We loved travelling around the world and researching animals across the hemispheres. We worked in small groups to create our very own fact file of these different animals. Next week, we look forward to looking at the physical and human features from an aerial view.

Year 2 brought their reading alive during English and became Shantymen when singing their own rendition of The Wellerman. Everyone worked as a team to keep the rhythm of the sea shanty. It was extremely impressive! We then had a little boogie to it as well.

We continued to look at more artwork created by Giuseppe Arcimboldo; this week was ‘Flora’. We explored all the flowers used in it and how it relates to spring, especially at the spring goddess Flora. After analysing and discussing Arcimboldo’s work, we had a at creating our own portrait made of leaves and flowers.

Blog 4.jpeg

What another brilliant week we've had in Year 2!

We were delighted to take part in our very own school Read-a-thon and drop everything on Monday and Tuesday to read! We filled our Read-a-thon sessions with books we loved to read as well as reading our own class novel James and the Giant Peach.

We started the week with a fantastic PE lesson playing various activities where we had to make quick decisions, show respect for others and displayed honesty when getting caught. In PE we also slithered like snakes, bounced like bunnies and scampered like mice.

In Music, we bought out the glockenspiels and played along to our song ‘Hands, Feet and Heart’. We showed amazing teamwork when helping our partner read the notes they had to play.

In Maths, we continued our topic of ‘Place Value’. We started by looking at mathematical symbols less than, greater than and equal to. We also showed our knowledge of number lines by labelling number lines to 100. At the end of the week, we started to show our addition and subtraction skills by adding and subtracting numbers to 20. Miss Finlay, Mrs Giles and Mr Hughes were very impressed! Next week, we will continue to look at addition and subtraction problems to 20 as well as number facts to 100.

In English, we have continued to develop our Reading and Writingduring our Phonics lessons. We spent the week developing our writing skills as well as being able to say, hold and build our sentences carefully. We were very careful throughout making sure we used appropriate punctuation.

We loved recapping on the seven continents this week as well as comparing the UK and Ecuador, specifically the capital city Quito. We learned all about the similarities and differences between the two countries. Next week, we look forward to learning about where animals live, what climate they need and why.

In Science, we were creepy crawly explorers! We went on a mini-beast hunt and managed to discover all the different insects that live in our school grounds. We made sure to use our school value ‘Nurture’ to make sure we were careful when visiting the insects’ habitats.

During our RE lesson, we looked at and explored the different stories from the Old Testament and the New Testament. We listened to a variety of stories from each and then created a ‘book cover’ for stories from each. We found them really interesting and thought the message that each story was trying to send and tell us was really special.

We continued to look at more artwork created by Giuseppe Arcimboldo; this week was ‘The Four Elements’. We explored these elements, ‘water, fire, air and earth’ and discussed what we thought we would see in each painting. After analysing and discussing Arcimboldo’s work, we had a turn at creating our very own elemental painting.

Don’t forget to follow our Twitter account @Year2TSP to see our learning highlights throughout the week.

From everyone here in Year 2, we wish you a lovely, relaxed weekend and look forward to seeing you on Monday.

We have had another fantastic week here in Year 2!

We started the week by reading all about Samuel Pepys, looking at facts about him and even reading some of his diary!

In Maths, we continued our topic of ‘Place Value’. We started by writing numbers up to 100 in digits and words. Then we revised and solved number facts to 20 and discussed the value of each digit. We then had the challenge of a ‘Mystery Picture’ where we had to solve the number facts, colour them in and reveal the hidden picture. Next week, we will continue to focus on place value, showing numbers on a number line as well as using mathematical symbols.

In English, we enjoyed exploring our new books, developing our writing skills as well as saying and holding our sentences carefully. We were very eagle-eyed, making sure we used appropriate punctuation throughout.

In Art, we looked at the artwork ‘The Four Seasons’ created by Giuseppe Arcimboldo. We analysed and discussed what we saw in each painting and how they linked to the seasons. Afterwards, we imagined how our own seasonal painting might look and thought about what we would include.

This week in Science, we put on our ‘Facts Hats’ and researched an animal to create our very own fact file. We found out loads of interesting facts about flamingos, elephants, sloths and many more!

We then finished the week by singing our hearts out for our Harvest Service! We loved singing these hymns over the past couple of weeks and hope you sang along with us in church. To celebrate National Fitness Week, we joined the incredible Dame Darcey Bussell for a virtual dance and had a little boogie with her. Strictly, here we come! We then ended the day by discussing ‘The Creation Story’ in RE and talked about how important and special it is to us.

Roald Dahl.jpeg

What a wonderful week here in Year 2, filled with so many exciting learning opportunities!

In Music, we focused on finding the beat of a song – tapping and singing along to ‘Hands, Feet and Heart’. We then impressed Miss Finlay, Mrs Giles and Mr Hughes by learning it off by heart and performing it for them at the end of our lesson.

In PE, we all showcased our school value and had ‘Hope’ to believe in ourselves that we could all do our absolute best. We concentrated on our running and dodging skills, playing various games and having friendly competitions to continually improve these skills.

We put our ‘facts hats’ on in Geography, when we explored the continents and oceans of the world. Year 2 learned about the equator, how to tell if a country is hot or cold as well as being able to name all the continents and oceans!

In Science, we were able to classify objects into their groups – living, dead or never alive. This required us to put on our ‘thinking hats’ as we worked in groups to identify and sort objects into their matching ‘hoop’.

This week in Maths, we focused on Place Value and showcasing what each number is worth. We have been working hard to break down numbers into their tens and ones as well as being able to partition numbers to 100. Not only this, but we have been revising our number bonds every day!

This week also marked Roald Dahl day and we were inspired by our class novel ‘James and the Giant Peach’ to create our own Roald Dahl bookmarks. Year 2 are loving our novel and like James are eager to find out what will happen next.

Don’t forget to follow our Twitter account @Year2TSP to see our learning highlights throughout the week.

Year 2 - Autumn 1 - Week 1

Date: 9th Sep 2022 @ 3:27pm

Y2 A1.jpegWow, what an incredible start to the school year! We have had an amazing week settling into our new classroom. We have had a wonderful time catching up with our friends and teachers.

We had a magical beginning to our Year 2 journey, when an Encanto candle was delivered to the classroom! We were excited to find out what it meant. Mirabel from Encanto had sent a message telling us that she needed our help to keep the candle glowing! We had to help her by completing challenges linked to our school values. For every challenge completed, an Encanto character charm would appear, making the candle stronger. Year 2 were ready for their mission immediately.

Our first mission was to go on an Encanto word hunt. Year 2 were tasked with exploring the playground to find as many Encanto butterflies as they could. We used our school value ‘Serve’ and ‘Nurture’ to discuss each word that the butterfly had printed on their wings. We carefully thought about each word and how they helped us and each other to be our best, thinking about how they linked with our school values.

We then recognised that we all have special powers that might not be visible, just like the characters in Encanto. We brainstormed and realised that we have some amazing powers and gifts hidden inside of us. We created our own ‘Madrigal’ door, showing everyone what our amazing and special powers were.

We loved using the parachute for our first PE. We solved problems, nurtured with helping hands, worked as a team and went head-to-head for some challenges. We are so excited for our next PE lesson. We then went exploring in Colombia, found out what animals we could find there, what food we could eat and even learnt some Spanish. Then, we danced like Luisa, enjoying every moment with happy feet.

In our busy week, we even became animators when we designed a brand-new character to join the Madrigal family. Some could fly, others could control the ocean and some could even make people dance whenever they wanted!

It has been a pleasure welcoming the children to Year 2 and we look forward to the year ahead. Don’t forget to follow our Twitter account @Year2TSP to see our learning highlights throughout the week.

A reminder that our PE lesson will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays. Weekly spellings will also begin to be set next Friday.

Year 2 - Summer 2 - Week 5

Date: 8th Jul 2022 @ 1:16pm

IMG_9296[1].JPGWhat a fantastic week we have had making memories we will treasure for a lifetime. We were superstars on our school trip making delicious pizzas and exploring the cityscape of Liverpool. We were over the moon when we bumped into Leanne and Scott outside St John’s Beacon Tower. Did you hear our shoutout on the radio?

In RE this week, we recapped our understanding of Pentecost and looked at the different symbols that are used to represent the Holy Spirit. We then focused on the Fruits of the Holy Spirit and expressed our understanding through created collages of the fruits in groups.

In Writing, we wrote some wonderful descriptions of the village which appears in our focus books ‘Grandad’s Secret Giant’. We used lots of amazing adjectives and emotion words. On Wednesday, we talked about we can become authors and as a class we planned a new version of the story by changing the characters and setting. The children cannot wait to write their own stories next week.

In Maths, we have practised mental arithmetic, missing number calculations and multiplication tables. Children should now be secure with their 2, 5 and 10 multiplications. Next, the children should learn their 4, 8 and 3 multiplication tables. The 4 and 8 multiplication tables have a link to the 2 multiplication table, so this is a great way to learn them quicker by recognising the patterns.

In Reading, we read a fabulous fairy tale called ‘King Thrushbeard’ and had a very interesting discussion about how our impressions of characters changed throughout the story.  This week, we had an assembly with Formby Library who introduced us to the Summer Reading Challenge. If your child is interested, please register at the library and encourage them to read six books throughout the holidays. Every two books your child reads they will receive a prize when the books are returned and new books are taken out. If six books are read, children will receive a certificate in school and we may even win a trophy as a whole school if lots of children participate.

On Friday, we had a super Science morning with a Science teacher from Formby High School. We focused on dissolving and made observations. The teacher was impressed with our scientific vocabulary. Then in the afternoon, we used our learning from yesterday to inspire artwork to create our very own cityscape of Liverpool using pastels and black craft paper.

Year 2 reminders:

  • Please can yellow reading diaries and all school books be returned to school so we can prepare books ready for September
  • Friday 15th is the last day of term with a finish at 1pm
  • National Book Tokens are running a competition where the lucky winner will win £1000 of book tokens for their chosen school and £100 book vouchers for themselves! Please click the link below to quickly enter and nominate our school for the win! Thank you! National Book Tokens Competition

IMG_3792[1].JPG

On your marks, get set, go! This week we had our wonderful sports day and the rain did not dampen our positive attitudes and energy. Everyone showed excellent teamwork and support for one another. Everyone is a winner in our class!

In Collective Worship, we read the Bible story of Adam and Eve and discussed truthfulness. We also discussed times when Jesus was honest and told the truth. We focused on Pentecost in RE and represented our learning by writing prayers on flame templates, as flames appeared above the disciples’ heads when the Holy Spirit came to them.

In English, we finished reading our focus book ‘Grandad’s Secret Giant’. The children were able to identify how emotions had changed for the characters throughout the story. Everyone wrote beautiful letters to the Giant to encourage him to return back to the town. It was lovely to see children using more adventurous vocabulary this week. As we are improving our editing skills, Miss Lucas taught us how to use a dictionary, so we can check our spellings independently. The children loved having dictionary races!

In Reading this week we have focused on the Grimm bothers, who wrote all the wonderful traditional tales we have been reading. The children found their lives and jobs fascinating. As well as this, we have been reading The BFG as our class novel. The children loved hearing about the dream jars.

In Maths, we have worked our socks off learning how to tell the time. We think we have mastered o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. We are now working on ensuring we are confident to tell the time using 5 minute intervals. We demonstrated our understanding of 5 past up to half past, but when it came to counting how many minutes to the next hour, it got a little bit trickier. Please encourage your child to start telling the time at home to reinforce this learning. There are some catchy songs on Youtube to help, one of the children’s favourites is ‘Hip Hop Around the Clock’.

In PE, as well as having our sports day, we began to learn the game of rounders. The children listened really well and all had a go at batting and fielding. We can’t wait for our next game!

In Geography, we have been looking at the continents and oceans of the world. Then we focused on identifying physical and human features of the seaside. A physical feature is something already on the land, whereas a human feature is something a human has made. When you are out and about, I wonder how many physical features and human features you can spot?

Friday was really exciting as we began our Design and Technology topic of ‘Perfect Pizza’. We became researchers and tasted a variety of margherita pizzas. We then rated them based on taste, smell, appearance and texture. We discussed what makes a good pizza and whether this is based on someone’s opinion. We also talked about improvements that could be made to some of the pizzas. Everyone is looking forward to making their own pizza next week at Pizza Express. I wonder what ratings these pizzas will get?

Year 2 reminders:

  • Please remind children to change their reading books any day of the week.
  • Yellow reading records in school daily.
  • Spelling books in school on Thursday.

Our school book fair is currently taking place in the school portacabin and is open from 3.05pm to 3.30pm each day after school until next Wednesday 6th July. All purchases made, result in more books for our class libraries! Please do support us if you are able to, and thank you to those of you who have supported this event already. Your support is very much appreciated.

IMG_3680[1].JPG

What a glorious week we have had in Year 2! There has been a lovely sense of positivity in the air and this has definitely shone through into the children’s work. Miss Lucas has been amazed at everyone’s writing this week; it has been FANTASTIC!

In Collective Worship, we have been delving further into our focus of ‘truthfulness’. We have read many stories such as Pinocchio, Ruthie and the (not so) Teeny Lie and the Emperor’s New Clothes. The children have been discussing how they feel towards lying and have participated in an activity where they had to decide what the best choice would be in some tricky situations. Often, lying is easy and gets us out of trouble initially, but we think lies can grow and they can make us feel worried, especially when they get out of hand. We shared ideas for how to promote telling the truth.

We had a wonderful day on Tuesday celebrating the Commonwealth Games 2022 and National Music Day. We started the day by writing pledges detailing what we hope for the world. The children had some amazing ideas such as ‘I hope people stop littering’, ‘I hope everyone takes care of all of the animals’ and ‘I hope everyone in the world can have a safe place to live’. The children showed great maturity and kindness during this task. Then we excitedly ran a ‘Lap of Hope’ around the school grounds. In the afternoon, we joined together as a whole school and sang ‘Sing’ to finish off the day. There was a great sense of community bursting out of our school walls. It was a precious moment for all involved. A huge thank you to Cass for sharing one of the 2012 Olympic torches with us!

We have continued focusing on the Commonwealth Games in our PE lesson where we explored the game of basketball. This was a huge hit with lots of the children!

In English, the children have been getting into character to write diary entries and letters. Vocabulary choices and sentence types have been exceptional and Miss Lucas is so proud of everyone’s efforts. In reading, we answered questions about the story ‘The Elves and The Shoemaker’ and then explored a poem all about giants. We have even been reading ‘The BFG’ for our end of the day class novel. Miss Lucas has thoroughly enjoyed listening to us all read our home school reading books and spending time talking about lots of interesting topics that come up in the books.

This week, we used our English work to inspire our Art lesson. We focused on the image of Billy and his Grandad getting caught in a storm when they were sailing in their boat. The children used watercolour to create their own stormy sea paintings.

In Maths, we are now focusing on telling the time. This week, we have consolidated telling the time to the hour and half past and have introduced the children to quarter past and quarter to on the analogue clock. This would be an ideal time to children to start wearing a watch and keep attempting to tell the time. Time is a mathematical concept which is best mastered through practise little and often and when applied to real life scenarios.

In Science, we have continued our topic of ‘Masterchefs’ by sorting out some shopping based on what the food provides for humans. Lots of interesting discussions were had about different food categories and how food can help our bodies to grow, concentrate and give us energy.

We have ended the week with a wonderful afternoon at our Summer Fair. The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring the stalls and activities with their friends. We hope anyone who participated in the Mini Mudder had the best time!

Wishing you a wonderful weekend, see you on Monday!

!Y2 Summer 2 w1.JPG

Welcome back after an eventful half term break full of celebrations. The children enjoyed sharing what they had been up to in the holidays, they even wrote a recount and a letter thanking someone in their English lessons this week. These were lovely to read.

In collective worship we are focusing on truthfulness which links to our school value of Serve. This week, we looked at the story of ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’ and discussed morals.

In RE, the children completed their unit on Special Places by focusing on what is special about a church.

This half term in English, we will be focusing on story telling. On Wednesday, we were introduced to our focus book ‘Grandad’s Secret Giant’ by David Litchfield. We will be developing our story telling skills through focused activities around this text.

In Maths, we have looked at measuring in centimetres and metres. We now know how to use rulers to measure accurately and have been exploring measuring using metre sticks. It has been lovely to see many children accessing the challenges set in Maths lessons this week, well done everyone!

On Wednesday, it was World Ocean Day, so we joined WWF on a zoom webinar to learn about how we can help our oceans. This sparked lots of discussion and the children expressed their love for the ocean through art.

In PSHE, we drew around our hands and decorated them with messages to remind us to use kind hands with our friends. We really enjoyed this activity.

The children have thoroughly enjoyed learning about seaside holidays in the past, investigating photographs and comparing similarities and differences to our seaside holidays now to those in the Victorian era. The children particularly enjoyed learning about how the Victorians travelled to the coast by steam train. We have also been singing ‘Beside the seaside’.

In PE, we practised our aiming and tracking skills for striking and fielding games and also began preparation for our upcoming Sports Day.

In preparation for our Commonwealth Games celebration and National Music Day we have started to learn the song ‘Sing’ the Commonwealth version by Gary Barlow. Please encourage your child to continue to learn the lyrics outside of school, so they can fully participate on the day.

Thank you for a fabulous week!

Reminders:

  • Please can children bring their yellow diaries to school daily as we are increasing the number of reads children have in the week. There will be no set day for reading to an adult. All children will have one read recorded in their yellow diary by an adult during the week.
  • Children are allowed to change their reading book on any day.
  • Spelling test will be on Thursday. Please ensure all spelling books are in school.

Year 2 - Summer 1 - Week 6

Date: 27th May 2022 @ 7:56am

!Y2 Summer 1 - week 6.JPG

Year 2 are more than ready for a well deserved rest! We have completed all our English and Maths booklets and showed great determination and positive attitudes all week. Well done everyone!

In Collective Worship, we continued discussing perseverance and began by listening to Bruno Mars singing “Don’t Give Up”. Then, we discussed the bible story of Noah having the huge task of building the ark and never giving up. Year 2 then discussed a big task they have completed and how they persevered.

This week has been RSE week, and we have looked at how humans grow from young to old and completed timelines indicating key features of each part of the life cycle. We then looked at the differences in the life cycles of different types of animals such as chickens, frogs, bears and butterflies. Finally, we had a very respectful circle time about secrets and surprises. We identified good secrets and worry secrets. The children decided that it is best to let a trusted adult know if they feel they have a worry secret.

In PE, we focused on jumping high like dolphins. We worked in pairs to encourage our partners to use the correct skill to jump as high as they could. The children loved jumping high to reach different types of fish that dolphins would catch for their dinner.

On Wednesday, we were wowed in the spectacular Science Show. We learnt all about space and observed experiments which taught us about forces. Thank you Mad Science! The children brought home a letter about a Mad Science after school club that will take place on a Wednesday after half term. If you would like your child to have a place in the club, please see the contact details on the letter.

A huge congratulations to all the children who participated in our talent show auditions. Every act was extremely entertaining and demonstrated dedication. We were all thoroughly entertained.

We had a great time celebrating the Platinum Jubilee by looking at the life of Queen Elizabeth II and sketching life like portraits of her Royal Highness. We even went on a treasure hunt to find clues about her coronation. There was also time to create bunting and flags to decorate outside our class for the jubilee picnic. Celebrations continued with us all going into the hall for the talent show where we saw members of the Royal family and Britain’s Got Talent judges! We had an amazing day that we will never forget!

Have a wonderful half term break.

Reminders: · Love Reading have issued their Mid-May Newsletter; please see many more top-read recommendations you may wish to explore with your child/ren. Happy reading!

· Lots of unnamed cardigans and jumpers went to lost property. Please can you label children’s uniform.

Year 2 - Summer 1 - Week 5

Date: 19th May 2022 @ 1:57pm

!Y2 Summer 1 - week 5.JPG

Everyone in Year 2 have worked their socks off this week and all the adults couldn’t be prouder! Huge well done for your effort, concentration and determination this week.

In our collective worship we have been looking at perseverance. This week our focus was on the Hindu religion and the story of Rama and Sita. The story is about how Rama persevered to rescue Sita from the demon King Ravana.

In RE this week, we discussed how Jesus went to quiet places to pray and meet with God and looked at photographs of the countryside around Galilee. After this, we looked at photos of churches now and how these are special places for Christians to meet today.

We continued our work in art on the sculptor Andy Goldsworthy. This week, we created paths and walls outside the classroom using the natural materials collected. The children are enjoying being outside creating their art sculptures. If you look carefully, you may see some around as you wait to pick the children up!

In Science, we have focused on a balanced diet and looked at the different food groups. The children were very curious about how people adapt their diet based on whether they are vegan, vegetarian or have an allergy. This was a very interesting discussion and the children showed genuine interest to what everyone offered to our discussion.

It has been lovely to focus on athletics out in the sunshine. This week we have been working on our throwing and jumping techniques.

The children have begun some fabulous arts and crafts in preparation for the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations. On Friday 27th May, we will be celebrating the Queen’s jubilee with a Year 2 picnic. Please see a message from School Spider for more details.

Wishing you a restful weekend,

Team Year 2

Year 2 Reminders:

· There are a number of unclaimed jumpers in our classroom. If you think it could belong to your child, please feel free to look at them before or after school.

· Please encourage your child to return their book once completed and select a new one to bring home.

Year 2 - Summer 1 - Week 4

Date: 13th May 2022 @ 8:23am

!Y2 Summer 1 - week 4.JPG

Year 2 have had another great week, full of learning and laughter.

In Collective Worship we continued looking at special places for Christians by listening to the story of Moses and the building of the Tabernade.

With Mrs Piercy, we had so much fun creating sculptures in the style of Andy Goldsworthy using a variety of nature and natural materials. We were able to sort the materials into different catgories before creating our final designs.

As you will have seen on our Twitter, we loved using the drama technique of ‘Conscience Alley’ to think like the characters in our focus book ‘The Last Wolf’. We were astonished that the author, Mini Grey, tweeted us back! We also planned and wrote letters to a variety of people from Little Red, persuading them to help plant more trees in the forest, so it is a nicer place for the animals to live. Miss Lucas was extremely impressed with our vocabulary!

In reading sessions, we are fully committed to finding out whether Mr Fox and his family will survive after being trapped by the farmers; Bean, Bunce and Boggis. The children were excellent at inferencing the character’s feelings at different points in the text. It has been lovely to hear children asking what new vocabulary means.

This week we finished our Math’s unit of fractions nicely with some problem solving activities. We noticed sometimes we make small errors by not counting accurately, so we thought it would be a good idea to practise our mental calculations. There is a wonderful app by Whiterose called ‘One minute Maths’, which I highly recommend.

Watch out Usain Bolt, in PE we developed our running techniques and even competed in some races including relay races. This was lots of fun!

In Science, we planned a healthy lunchbox for Little Red to take on her journey through the woods. We looked at the rainbow variety of fruit and vegetables and how they impact our bodies.

Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside. In history, the children shared all their knowledge about the seaside ready to investigate seaside holidays from the past next week. It would be lovely to see some photographs of your family at the seaside.

In the last week of Summer 1, we will be holding a talent show in our classroom. The children who wish to participate have been practising their acts. On Thursday 22nd May, children are allowed to bring in costumes, music and props to accompany their act. The final of our talent show will take place on Friday 23rd May in the hall.

Fingers crossed for a sunny weekend!

Year 2 Reminders:

· Please can jumpers and cardigans be labelled.

· If your child has finished reading their reading book, they can bring it in to change it, even if it is not their reading day.

· SATs weeks will be w/b 16th May and 23rd May.

Year 2 - Summer 1 - Week 3

Date: 6th May 2022 @ 2:51pm

!Y2 Summer 1 - week 3.JPG

This week has flown by and we have been busy bees Year 2.

In RE, we have widened our knowledge of special places to different faiths. Mrs Piercy read us the story of Jacob’s dream and we created our own pictures of the dream.

We have enjoyed delving into Fantastic Mr Fox in our reading lessons. The children have used retrieval and inference skills to answer questions and used drama techniques to retell key events. It was wonderful to see children eager to act in front of the class.

In our writing lessons, we looked at adding the suffixes -er and -est onto words such as loud – louder – loudest. The children used this language to write a warning notice to people entering the woods. We read more of our focus book ‘The Last Wolf’ and were introduced to the Last Wolf, the Last Bear and the Last Lynx. In the story the characters talk about ‘the good old days’, and we talked about our understandings of memories. The children really enjoyed writing in character, pretending to be a wolf, bear or lynx recalling a happy memory before they became endangered. With Mrs Piercy, the children continued to practise reading comprehension skills and also learned about homophones.

In Maths, we have continued learning about fractions. It has been wonderful to see the children’s understanding develop further. We learned the difference between a unit fraction and a non-unit fraction. The children were challenged to find 2/4 and ¾ of amounts. We will continue focusing on finding ¾ next week. A huge well done to everyone for your focus and determination this week.

We linked PE with Science this week and completed some fun exercises in a circuit. We identified which parts of the body we were using for each exercise and extended our vocabulary by using some names of the muscles. The children were amazed that they could feel their pulse either in their wrist or neck. We also focused on creating a healthy mind by identifying what makes us happy, how we can cheer ourselves up and some strategies to support ourselves when we feel sad or angry.

The children were extremely excited to hear the news that there will be a talent show coming up soon and have spent most playtimes practising their performances. This has been a delightful sight.

Have a great weekend, see you on Monday!

Year 2 Reminders:

  • Please can jumpers and cardigans be labelled.
  • If your child has finished reading their reading book, they can bring it in to change it, even if it is not their reading day.
  • SATs weeks will be w/b 16th May and 23rd Ma
  • Spelling test is on Thursday.

Year 2 - Summer 1 - Week 2

Date: 29th Apr 2022 @ 3:06pm

!Y2 Summer 1 - week 2.JPG

We have had an amazing week in Year 2 and everyone definitely deserves a restful weekend after all the hard work I have seen in our classroom.

On Monday, we entered school to evidence of a wolf in our classroom! The children were enthralled and immediately began investigating, asking questions and problem solving ways to catch the wolf. The children used amazing adjectives to write a character description of the wolf to display around the school to encourage everyone to keep an eye out for the wolf.

In RE this week, we continued to look at special places and showed each other respect by listening to one another during discussions.

In English, we started reading the first few pages of ‘The Last Wolf’.  We wrote a list of what we would need to catch a wolf, including words such as ‘because’ and ‘so that’ to provide reasons for our decisions. We also wrote rules for Little Red to follow, focusing on using apostrophes in contracted form such as ‘Don’t stray off the path, unless it looks safe.’ Our writing is improving each day and we are proud of ourselves! With Mrs Piercy, the children practised reading comprehension skills.

In Maths, we have focused on recognising and finding halves, quarters and thirds of both shapes and amounts. Miss Lucas was very impressed! Some children have been using the vocabulary ‘numerator’ and ‘denominator’, which has blown Miss Lucas’s socks off! With Mrs Piercy, the children developed their understanding of strategies to answer addition calculations in their head and by using jottings to work out calculations which were a little trickier.

In Science, we discussed why keeping fit is important for a healthy body and a healthy mind. We were very lucky on Thursday to have a PE session with Ultimate Kids. We played lots of fun, active games. In Art, we were introduced to the artist, Andy Goldsworthy, who is famous for his sculptures and photography.

We had lots of fun playing ‘What time is it Mr Wolf’ this week. Each week, we will learn some new playground games, so we have a variety of activities to choose from during our play times.

What an exciting week we have had in Year 2! Enjoy the bank holiday weekend and we look forward to hearing your news on Tuesday.

Year 2 Reminders

  • Spelling test will take place on a Thursday. Please ensure children have their spelling books in school by Thursday.

Year 2 - Summer 1 - Week 1

Date: 22nd Apr 2022 @ 5:25pm

!Y2 Summer 1 - week 1.JPG

What an amazing start to Summer Term in Year 2! The children have returned eager to learn and this has created an excellent buzz in our classroom. Curiosity has definitely been a theme for this week with children wanting to learn what a dictionary is used for, how distance can alter our perception of size and how we can work together to look after our Earth.

In RE this week, we looked at special places and what makes a place special to us. We learnt about special places to different religions and recognised a church as a special place for Christians.

In Maths, the children had their multicoloured hats on and impressed us with their ability to articulate answers to solve problems and challenges involving measure, focusing on height and length. They enjoyed comparing their heights to find out who was taller, shorter or the same height as them. Some children have expressed an interest in measuring and would love to continue this at home. Dig out your measuring tapes! I wonder if anyone could send in a photograph of their excellent measuring skills?

On Wednesday the children were introduced to our focus text ‘The Last Wolf’ by Mini Grey. The title sparked an interest in what the word ‘last’ meant, which led us to researching endangered animals. Lots of wonderful vocabulary was used such as extinct, deforestation, devasting and innocent. Using the research, the children then went on to write some inspiring speeches to persuade people to save the animals. I think David Attenborough will be in touch soon to recruit some Year 2 experts to his team!

Our History lesson, introduced us to seaside holidays and we will continue to develop our understanding of what seaside holidays looked like in the past over the next coming weeks. In Science, the children thought about how they could keep their bodies and mind healthy. There were some fabulous ideas such as reading, drinking water and meditating.

Friday’s focus was all about Earth Day and the children came up with interesting ideas for what we could do to look after our planet. They then enjoyed creating collages of the Earth.

A huge well done for your hard work and positive attitudes this week. We are very proud of you and we cannot wait to continue our learning next week.

Year 2 Reminders

  • During Summer 1, PE will continue to take place on a Monday and Thursday. Please ensure children come to school in the correct PE kit on these days.

What a final week we have had this week in Year 2!

On Tuesday, we had an amazing trip to Martin Mere, where we learnt all about the different habitats there were as well as the animals that lived there. We were amazed at all of the different jobs they do to keep the habitat safe. The children had a lovely time completing the activities and were really invested by the informative information. In the afternoon, we really enjoyed our wild walk and looking at all of the beautiful, exotic birds.

On Wednesday, we had our Easter service at Trinity St Peter’s Church. We were all really proud of the children’s acting, reading and singing. The children all had an amazing time and it was lovely to see the smiles on their faces throughout the performance. This linked in well with our RE topic from this half term of The Easter Story.

On Thursday, we enjoyed our Computing day by creating our own sequels to well known stories. We started with the stimulus of The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs and then brainstormed our own ideas. The children were so creative and made some amazing books on their IPads.

All week, we have been designing and making our very own moving vehicles. From ambulances, to fire engines, to taxis, we really have had a wide array of vehicles. The children really enjoyed the challenge of putting the axels and wheels onto the vehicles and persevered amazingly. The children were really proud of their final creations and were so impressed by how well they worked when they tested them outside.

In Science, the children continued to look at forces and what affect they have on different objects. We had an amazing time looking at forces such as gravity and air pressure.

With it being Easter, we completed our very own Easter cards. The children designed and created their own eggs before writing their lovely messages inside.

I hope you all have an enjoyable and well deserved Easter break.

Happy Easter!

Reminders

  • We come back to school on Tuesday 19th April
  • PE days stay as Monday and Thursday

Year 2 - Spring 2 - Week 5

Date: 25th Mar 2022 @ 4:16pm

Sp 2 WK 5.jpeg

This week Year 2 have loved making the most of the sunny weather!

In English, we finished reading our story ‘Major Glad and Major Dizzy’. We looked at different diary entries and then planned out our own as if we were the character Major Glad from the story. Then, we created our very own diary entries to describe what was happening and how we were feeling throughout. I was really impressed with the work that the children produced.

In Maths we have continued or work with shapes, focusing on 3D shapes. We drew funny faces on 3D shapes to understand what a face on a shape is. Made frames out of straws and blue tac to understand sides and vertices, explored sorting shapes and making patterns using them and on Friday we had our final quiz that we all did really well in!

We had our usual Music lessons with Mrs. McCardle learning an amazing Easter song on our recorders. In R.E, we continued looking at the Easter Story and began to sequence it into order.

Our Geography lesson had us going on a fact hunt around our classroom to understand more about life in Kenya. Our PE included yoga in the sun and we loved learning the positions of star, crow and tree before making our own combinations and transitions between them.

In PSHE, we learnt all about relaxation and had some amazing discussions about emotions, stress and what we do to relax. Then we went on a sensory walk around the school field, listening to the birds, feeling the grass, smelling the air and counting the colours we could see. In Science we investigated materials and whether we can squash, bend, stretch or twist them and learnt that if something breaks it cannot be bent.

We’ve been working hard on our Easter Service; the songs are sounding great and we’re really enjoying focusing on the meaning of the lyrics and understanding the Easter story more.

Thank you very much to everyone that attended Parents Evening this week. Please remember that Parents Evening is taking place in school next Wednesday and if you can’t make your appointment, then please let me know.

I hope you have a restful week and are raring to go for a final week of the Easter term next week

What a wonderful week of learning in Year 2!

Unfortunately, this week Mr. Houghton has been poorly so Miss Sharp has been teaching us and what a week we’ve had!

In English, we have continued our work on apostrophe’s, hid under our tables to imagine what it would be like to be stuck under the floorboards like Major Glad and Major Dizzy in our text, and even had the chance to control our teacher making a jam sandwich using Imperative Verbs! We have focused on including conjunctions and using our senses to develop our writing skills and our sentences are becoming more complex because of it.

Our Maths lessons have been very eventful as well! We have taken shape drawing outside onto the number square in the playground to understand how to use the grid lines in our books, worked with partners to make our own symmetrical shapes, painted half of a paper butterfly before folding them in half to see the whole shape and made a human sorting grid to categorise our 2D shapes.

We had our usual Music lessons with Mrs. McCardle and Miss Dilworth for recorders and singing. We’re having so much fun beginning to learn about how a harmony works alongside a melody and some of us even performed recorder solo’s! In R.E, we looked at the Paschal candle and designed our own after learning what the different elements of the design represent. We enjoyed Geography with Mrs. Brunyee and continued working on our project thinking about the landscape and climate in Kenya. Our PE included an over/under competition where we learned that sometimes taking our time and doing things accurately means that we are more likely to succeed in our task than if we rush.

On Friday we celebrated Red Nose Day, some of us wore red noses and boppers. We spoke about how laughter can be the best medicine and thought about times when laughter has helped us overcome a challenge. It was also World Science Week this week, to celebrate the theme of Growth we ventured outside to make friends with some trees, learning about how we can tell an old tree from a young tree and how they are always growing.

Miss Sharp and Miss Edwards would like to thank the children for their hard work this week and can’t wait to see you all safe and well on Monday!

SP 2 WK 3.jpeg

What an exciting week in Year 2!

As always, we have continued to work hard here in Year 2! We have been learning all about 2D and 3D shapes and their properties. Learning about different shapes and their vertices, the children have really gained a good understanding of this. Next week, we will begin to draw our own shapes.  In RE, we looked at the Easter story and discussed how the main characters would have been feeling throughout. In Music, we were fortunate enough to have Mrs McCardle teaching us even more on the recorder (some of us even performed in small groups!) as well as Miss Dilworth finishing teaching us the song ‘Roar’ by Katy Perry. The final product was really impressive. In Geography, we looked at the different animals that live in Kenya and the reasons that they live in their habitat. The children came up with some amazing ideas and really showcased their knowledge and in PE, we moved on to bouncing and catching a ball and the skills required to do this. In Art, we spoke about how we use our pencils to sketch in different ways. The children are excited to try this out next week when they create their own self-portraits. We also celebrated International Women's Day by celebrating the women in our lives and understanding exactly how important they are to us.

We continued our Collective Worship this week, with our focus being on ‘Sacrifice’. We discussed how some children are not as lucky as us in being able to come to school and why it is important for us to take the opportunity to learn. We further discussed if anybody has sacrificed anything for Lent and the reasons that they might have done this.

In English this week, we have been really focussing on writing in the past tense as well as using an apostrophe in our work. E.G: Amelia was being unkind to William’s toys. The children have really enjoyed this and have grasped this concept well. They have further included this in other writing that they have completed, showing that they have a good understanding of this. Over the coming weeks, we will be continuing to work on this.

We would like to say a massive thank you to Callum and Laura for coming in this week from the Merseyside Police to talk to us for National Careers Week. The children were fully engaged and loved finding out what the police do, why they became police and what they need to do to become a policeman or policewoman. They also came up with some amazing questions for them to answer. It was lovely to see how engaged and inspired the children were throughout the session and how happy some of them were when they got to try on the police outfits.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and are ready for another hard-working week next week.

Year 2 Reminders

  • Next Friday, we will be celebrating Red Nose Day. Your child may come in with a red nose or red boppers and we will have some exciting activities for the afternoon.
  • Please ensure that children’s hair is tied up if it is longer than shoulder length. This is because cleanliness of hair is paramount.
  • Children’s recorders are to be brought in every Monday for our recorder sessions. If your child would like to take home a recorder, they can be purchased from the school office.

What an eventful week this week in Year 2!

As always, we have continued to work hard here in Year 2! We have been recapping our prior learning in both Maths and English. It has been lovely seeing the children showcasing their knowledge and how much they have progressed through the year. In Music, Mrs McCardle was in again teaching us another new note on the recorders and we also had the amazing Miss Dilworth back in teaching us ‘The Family Madrigal’ from Encanto and a brand-new song, ‘Roar’ by Katy Perry. In RE, we revisited the Easter story and looked at how Jesus would have been feeling when he was sacrificing himself. In Geography, we looked at what we would and wouldn’t take with us if we visited Kenya. The children were really creative with this and come up with some amazing ideas and in PE, we moved on to sending and receiving using a football.

This week, we started our brand-new Collective Worship value of ‘Sacrifice’. We discussed the meaning of sacrifice and what it means to make a sacrifice. We also linked this into sacrifices that we would make ourselves in every day life and linked this in with the start of Lent.

On Thursday, to celebrate World Book Day, Year 2 showed their creative sides by coming in dressed as their favourite story characters. From Little Red Riding Hood to Gangsta Granny, we really did have it all. Explaining why they had chosen their characters, we drew our characters down and explained exactly why these are our favourites. The children also took part in a 'guess the story' quiz, allowing them to use their problem-solving skills to determine which stories were being described. This afternoon, we designed our own front covers for our own brand-new stories using the characters that we were dressed as. We then wrote our own opening to the stories allowing the children to use their creative sides. The children loved reading these out. To end our day, we completed a draw a long, drawing The Cat in the Hat. It was amazing to see their final products and how proud they were. We all had such a lovely day here in Year 2! Thank you all for putting so much time and effort into the children’s costumes.

We have also been celebrating Fair trade fortnight and the importance of understanding why it is important to buy products that are Fair trade. Together, we created our very own banana split, using only Fair trade products. The children showed a really strong understanding of the importance of using Fair trade produce and all promised that they would keep a lookout for the Fair trade logo when they go shopping with their grown-ups.

I hope you all have an amazing, restful weekend and come in next week ready for a hard-working week.

Year 2 Reminders

  • On Monday at 18:00, parents evening appointments open for you to book onto. The days are Wednesday 23rd and Wednesday 30th.
  • Please ensure that children’s hair is tied up if it is longer than shoulder length. This is because cleanliness of hair is paramount.
  • Children’s recorders are to be brought in every Monday for our recorder sessions. If your child would like to take home a recorder, they can be purchased from the school office.

Year 2 - Spring 2 - Week 1

SP2 WK1.jpeg

Welcome back! It was lovely to see all of your happy, smiling faces coming back into school this week.

As always, we have had such a hard-working week here in Year 2! We have been learning how to draw and interpret tally charts and pictograms in Maths. In Art, we explored portraits and compared and contrasted them by studying them in detail and in Music, we were lucky enough to have Mrs McCardle back in, teaching us some brand-new notes on the recorder. For our PSHE session, we looked at the importance of staying healthy and created our own ‘stay healthy’ posters.

Linking in with our Collective Worship value of ‘Joy’, this week, we discussed what gives us joy and designed our own jars of happiness. We also linked it to our school value of ‘Nurture’, understanding that showing kindness towards others will bring both us and our friends joy. We then created our own kindness notes to a member of our class to really show them exactly how they bring joy into our lives. We decided that joy is a really important part of our lives and that we should try our hardest to spread joy, which will help us also feel it ourselves.

In RE, we started our new topic, ‘Easter: How do symbols help us to understand the story?’. We looked at symbols that are linked with Easter and the meanings behind them. The children were really engaged throughout this and enjoyed asking lots of questions about the symbols.

In English this week, we started to look at the history of toys. The children really enjoyed looking at the changes that had been made and realised how lucky they were to have the toys they do. We then started our new story ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy’. We investigated the front cover and then played ‘I Spy’ by looking at the images and deciding what the soldiers were doing. Thank you all for bringing in a toy for your child to write about. The children were so engaged with this and loved describing their favourite toys. I know that the children are really looking forward to reading the story and learning what adventures Major Glad and Major Dizzy go on.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and are ready for another hard-working week next week!

We have had another hard-working week  in Year 2!

In RE, we finished off our topic ‘Jesus, friend to everyone’ by recapping exactly why Jesus was  a friend to everybody. We linked this to  our ‘Nurture’ value. We then looked at stories of how kind Jesus was and then wrote about how these people would have felt and how we could be more like Jesus in the future.

In English, we read our new story called ‘Traction Man’. We looked at all of the amazing costumes which he wore and described them with some incredible noun phrases. By the end of the week, we had rewritten the story with our own superheroes. After half term, we will be starting our brand-new story ‘Major Glad and Major Dizzy’, information about this can be found on our virtual classroom.

In Maths, we have been concentrating on our 2, 5 and 10 times tables. We looked at the different ways in which we can represent this and how it is possible to show these in different ways. On our virtual classroom, there are multiple ways in which you can support your child with this and the other areas  we have covered in our Maths lessons.

This week, we celebrated Safer Internet Day, where we looked at the importance of staying safe on the internet. The children then created their own safety posters about why they need to stay safe. If you would like any further information about this, please see the Online Safety section of the school website or click here. This linked in well with our Computing Day, where we created our own game of Charades using Scratch. The children loved working together to see if they could trick the other members of their table. It was amazing to see their creativity throughout this.

In History, we finished our topic ‘What is life like as the Queen of England?’ We further researched the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and looked back at her Diamond Jubilee. The children then wrote a postcard to a family member to describe what it would have been like if they saw the Queen at her Diamond Jubilee. In Science, we continued to look at plants and researched the life cycle of a seed.

In Music, we have continued to love working with Miss Dilworth and our challenging song ‘Family Madrigal’. I’m sure they are all practising and you are loving hearing this at home. This will continue after half term.

In Art, we have continued to look at paper, including  making different things out of it,  we created some bracelets using straws. The children really enjoyed this challenge and it was lovely to see their creativity.

We were fortunate to have an author visit us this week. Luke Temple came into school and delivered a wonderful assembly which really inspired the children and captured their imagination.

Finally, we would all like to say a massive thank you and goodbye to Miss Ahmed who has been teaching us over the past ten weeks. We have all thoroughly enjoyed our lessons and we will all really miss her.

I hope you have a lovely, relaxing half term and look forward to seeing you when we get back.
