We have had a fantastic week with our Year 1 friends and have enjoyed lots of exciting learning opportunities. We have been busy learning about tens and ones, representing numbers using Dienes in our Maths lessons. We have also enjoyed exploring our new text, “The Lion Inside”, by Rachel Bright and Jim Field, in English. On top of this, we have had so much fun taking part in our dragon themed PE lessons, which helped us to develop our sending and receiving skills, whilst having to carefully transport our dragon eggs to different locations.

In RE, Year 1 have been learning about Epiphany, the festival celebrating the visit of the Wise Men to Bethlehem, to see Jesus. We learnt how the Wise Men visited Jesus after the shepherds and we discussed the different gifts that they gave. This inspired us to think about the gifts that we received over Christmas and we used our yellow thinking hats to reflect on the gifts that meant the most. Connecting our discussion to our “invisible gift” activity before Christmas, we shared the invisible gifts that we had given or received during the festive period. Wearing our green thinking hats, we discussed how these special gifts made us feel and we soon realised that these are the gifts that mean the most to us. They weren’t bought from a shop and wrapped up, they were given from the heart and are meaningful. We enjoyed recording the many different invisible gifts on our own paper presents in our RE books.

Year 1 had a rather surprising start to their week, when they entered the classroom to find muddy paws prints, clawed displays and a terrible mess! They could not believe their eyes and there was a real buzz of excitement as we investigated the crime scene. Year 1 decided to use their black thinking hats to discuss what we knew from looking at the clues. There were fantastic ideas and lots of the children made connections to prior learning and their own experiences, to identify the kinds of animals that could have been responsible. The claws and large paw prints, alongside tiny footprints and a sprinkling of cheese, meant that Year 1 concluded the mess had been left by two characters from a story that had been left amongst the debris, “The Lion Inside”, by Rachel Bright and Jim Field. We have enjoyed spending the week exploring the story to find out more about our special visitors and we are eager to find out about the journey they have been on together, before escaping from their book!

Well done for another week full of hard work and lots of fun, Year 1. Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday!
