Year 1 - Spring 1 - Week 3

We have had another great week in Year 1! We began our week with an exciting History lesson as we explored the Titanic in more detail. We used our knowledge so far to investigate what made the unsinkable sink! We wanted to go beyond a simple answer, and explored more than one explanation. We worked in teams to read a variety of explanations to why the ship sank, we then used our investigative skills to explore which answers were most likely. We used all of the ideas to help us create our own sophisticated explanation of why the disaster occurred. We started to understand how the quickest answer is not always the best, we really needed to think about all of the possible explanations before articulating our own informed ideas. I have loved seeing such enthusiasm when we are exploring this topic, Year 1 have shared such fantastic thoughts and ideas!
In Maths this week we have come to the end of our ‘Place Value’ unit. We completed this unit by using all of our knowledge on counting within 10 and 20. We put our understanding into practice as we explored number lines to 10 and 20. We discovered the meaning of halfway and put this STAR vocab into our learning as later on in the week we had to focus on the start, halfway point and end of different number lines. We then used this understanding to estimate on a number line, we explored the meaning of estimate as another STAR vocab word. We had fun estimating the amounts of different things in the classroom! We then compared numbers within 20, by using greater than and less than symbols, we then made the numbers usingmanipulatives.
This week in RE we read another story from the Bible. We read ‘The Calming of the Storm’. We are beginning to understand why Jesus is so special! We were fascinated by his amazing life performing miracles and how his miracles show that he is the son of God. We put ourselves in the Disciple’s shoes by re-enacting facial expressions and exploring how they might have felt on the boats.
