Yet another wonderful week here in Year 1, filled with so many exciting learning opportunities! In Maths, we have been learning about fact families, using our knowledge of part whole models, to create addition and subtraction calculations to match. We have thoroughly enjoyed continuing to explore, “The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth”, by Ellie Hattie, taking the time to read this exciting new story by torch-light and creating some fantastic pieces of writing based on the story, including a “Missing” poster, to help Timothy and Oscar find Teddy. As well as this, Year 1 have loved playing “Dragons and Fireballs”, to help them develop their dodgeball skills, learning about Florence Nightingale as part of their Young Leaders Award and devouring some delicious pancakes, to celebrate Shrove Tuesday!

In RE, Year 1 began their new topic, “What can we learn from the Easter Story?”. We began by listening to the story, “Brenda’s Boring Egg”. We discussed the importance of the eggs and how excited the mummies in the story were to meet their ducklings. We then used our black thinking hats, to connect the story to a Christian festival where eggs are an important symbol. We learnt how an egg is a symbol of Easter because it represents new life and “The Story of Easter” says that after Jesus had died, his body was put into a cave called a tomb, before he then came back to life. The egg represents the tomb, and the animal that comes out of the egg represents Jesus coming back to life. We discussed that spring, the time of year we celebrate Easter, is a time when plants and flowers grow. There are many signs of new life including buds, frog spawn, lambs, chicks and daffodils. We then enjoyed going on a Spring walk with our friends, to see if we could spot any signs of new life for ourselves.

On Thursday, our Year 1 classroom was transformed into a magical land filled with storybook characters, in recognition of ‘World Book Day 2022’. The Reading Pixies from The Enchanted Reading Forest were extremely excited to celebrate with us for the first time! Year 1 had so much fun dressing up as their favourite storybook characters and put so much effort into bringing the stories to life. We all enjoyed a front row seat at “The TSP Character Catwalk”, on which we showed off our wonderful costumes and told everyone about our characters. We enjoyed writing character descriptions, taking the time to think carefully about some interesting adjectives that we could include. To ensure we never lose our page at story time, we made personalised scratch bookmarks, which we can’t wait to use! Of course, throughout the day we enjoyed sharing and listening to some of our favourite stories and we even enjoyed a yummy hot chocolate, to make it an extra special story time. It really was a fantastic day!

As part of ‘Fairtrade Fortnight 2022’, Year 1 have been working hard to deepen their understanding of Fairtrade and explored the question, ‘Why should we buy Fairtrade Products?’. Together, we researched Fairtrade and found out the important meaning behind the symbols that we often see on products in the shop. From what we had learnt, it was evident there are so many reasons why buying Fairtrade products is a good idea. We then had lots of fun making Fairtrade lemonade, using Fairtrade ingredients. Our tasty creation was a delight to drink and it was so nice to know that a fair payment would be going to all those involved in making the ingredients!

Well done for you hard work this week, Year 1! It has been an amazing week filled with lots of learning, smiles and laughter. Have a great weekend and we look forward to seeing you on Monday!
