Year 1 have had another fantastic week, taking part in lots of activities and celebrating some special events! In Maths, Year 1 have been busy revisiting the topics of place value and addition and subtraction, to further deepen their understanding. In English, we have been focusing on comprehension skills and the children have been working hard to develop and apply their skills to take on some tricky challenges. Across the curriculum, there have been lots of other wonderful activities which the children have enjoyed taking part in. From a dodgeball tournament in PE, to celebrating the inspirational women in our lives for “International Women’s Day”, Year 1 really have been very busy!

In RE this week, we listened to “The Story of Easter” and learnt about the significant events of Holy Week, leading up to Easter Sunday. We learnt about Palm Sunday, The Last Supper, Jesus praying in Gethsemane, Jesus’ crucifixion and the resurrection of Jesus. We discussed each of the events and used our green thinking hats to consider the changing emotions that Jesus would have experienced throughout this time. Year 1 then enjoyed making story wheels, to retell the events of Holy Week.

On Friday, we continued on our Young Leaders journey and began learning about perseverance. Year 1 were given a task for which perseverance was key! They had ten minutes to try to free a toy from a block of ice using only the resources in our classroom. When the time was up, we shared how we got on and discussed the following questions:

  • How did you feel at the beginning of the challenge?
  • Was the challenge difficult?
  • Did you feel like you wanted to give up?
  • How did you feel at the end of the challenge?

We understand that sometimes we must do things that are tricky, and we might feel like we want to give up, but it’s important to persevere. Perseverance means not giving up, sticking at it and being determined even when the task is difficult. We know that this is an important skill to have as a Young Leader to ensure that we can all work together with a positive “I can do it” attitude!

In addition to all of this, this week, we celebrated “Careers Week 2022”. To mark this ocassion, we had a very special, virtual visitor, who joined us in Year 1, to share her experience of being a nurse. We were very lucky to speak with Nurse Natalie, who answered lots of our questions about what it is like to be a nurse. We loved hearing about what her jobs involves, how and why she became a nurse and her favourite things about the job. The Q&A certainly inspired lots of us and many Year 1 children said that it is a job they would like to do.

Well done for another fantastic week, Year 1! We can’t wait to see you back in the classroom on Monday. Have a lovely weekend!
