Yet another fantastic week in Year 1! As always, we have been extremely busy carrying out some exciting activities and taking on lots of new challenges. Our Year 1 authors have shone again and, this week, have been working hard to write their own versions of “The Curious Case of the Missing Mammoth”, by Ellie Hattie. The children have worn their multicoloured thinking hats all week, to help them think creatively when writing their stories. Our Year 1 mathematicians have been wowing us with their knowledge of numbers to 50 and have been using their STAR vocabulary to explain their thinking. As well as this, we have taken a trip to the wild west in PE, when creating yoga stories, and we have enjoyed transforming into historians, to further explore the wonderful work of Florence Nightingale, in History.

In RE this week, we have continued to explore the Easter Story and have been learning about Jesus’ ascension into Heaven. We learnt how, after Jesus’ resurrection, he then ascended to be with God in Heaven and begin a new life. To help us understand this, we listened to “The Water Bug Story”, by Doris Stickney. The story taught us that water bugs make their way to the surface of the water, before then turning into beautiful dragonflies. After this transformation, they can no longer return to the pond and be with their water bug friends, however they now have an exciting and wonderful new life above the pond. We likened this to Jesus ascending into Heaven and no longer being able to return to Earth. To help us to remember this story, Year 1 created their own dragonflies, carefully decorating them with amazing colours and patterns.

On Monday, we celebrated “World Poetry Day”. Inspired by Michael Rosen’s “We Can” poem, Year 1 had so much fun writing their own versions. The children wore their multicoloured thinking hats to think creatively and they came up with some interesting objects and animals for their poem. They then shared plenty of giggles when deciding on the sound effects for each of their chosen objects and animals. From splashing puddles, to hissing snakes, there were lots of great ideas. Our Year 1 poets then got the chance to perform their poems for the class. The children put lots of effort into creating a really entertaining and engaging performance and we were blown away by the children’s confidence! There were plenty of interesting sound effects and even some actions to accompany the poems. It really was a treat to watch!

As always, well done for another wonderful week. We are very “eggcited” for a week filled with Easter fun next week! Have a great weekend.
