Year 2 - Spring 1 - Week 2

What a busy second week we have had here in Year 2!

In RE this week, we began our new topic ‘Jesus, friend to everyone’. In this, we discussed who Jesus was friends with and how they felt when they were around Jesus. The children came up with some amazing emotions that they would be feeling. We also discussed some of the different miracles that Jesus did and how it made the other people feel. The children really enjoyed this and are looking forward to continuing this topic in the coming weeks.

In English this week, we began our new story ‘The Dragon Machine’. The children were really excited about this and used their prediction skills to be able to interpret what the story was going to be about. We then had a surprise phone call from Year 3 telling us that some dragons had been let loose around the school. We had to write a letter to Mrs Pringle to let her know and to make sure that she is careful when being around school. The children came up with some brilliant ideas with this and it was lovely to see the excitement in their faces when they heard about the dragons.

In our Maths this week, we have been looking at money and seeing if we can recognise the different coins and notes. The children were really good at recognising these and completed some really good work. We then moved on to finding the total amount of money, as well as finding the difference. Although this is tricky, the children showed great persistence in this and continued to try their best throughout the week. Next week, we will be moving onto equal groups of amounts.

In History this week, we began our new topic ‘What is life like as the Queen of England’. We looked at Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II and learned some very interesting facts about them. The children were really inquisitive about all of the Queens and it was lovely to see how interested they were.

This week, we started our Music lessons. We were very lucky to have a music specialist coming in to class and helped us to learn some fun songs. We are hoping to start with our Recorder lessons from next week. Information about children being able to take these home will come in due course.

The children really enjoyed their PSHE lesson this week all about their dreams and goals. The children loved sharing these with the rest of the class and it was lovely to hear all of their achievements.

The children have also been trying really hard in our handwriting lessons this week. Handwriting is so important throughout the school, so if you have any time to help your child with this, then that would be greatly appreciated.

I have also set all children up on TT Rockstars and Sumdog. Your child will have their username and passwords in their bags and these are great to help them in their Maths.

Year 2 reminders

• Please remember to bring a water bottle filled with water into school.
• Our PE days are a Monday and a Thursday. Come into school in your PE kit on these days please.
• If you are bringing in show and tell, please just bring in one item as we do normally have a lot to go through.
• Please bring in one snack for before play time as it is not long until the children will be going into lunch afterwards.
• Please see our virtual classroom attached if you wish to assist your child further during the holidays.
• Spellings will be posted on Tapestry every Friday.
