Where has that week gone? It certainly feels like its flown by here in Year 3.

On Monday, we had an unusual box delivered to our class containing a range of unusual items as well as having various pictures scattered around the classroom. We soon found out that it was connected to our new Writing topic and it was our job to predict what we could be learning about. In order for us to do this, we had to connect our learning back to last term and try to decide if the book was fiction or nonfiction and also where it was set. From the clues, we were able to decipher that the book was linked to the Stone Age but lots of us thought it could be non-fiction and full of facts. We were shocked to learn that it was in fact a story, and was about boy who goes on a mysterious adventure. Using only the front cover and the first page, we set about creating our own versions of the story imagining the perilous journey Ben might take with some suggestions of animal attacks! Afterwards, we explored the different settings from the first three pages, describing and comparing them using expanded noun phrases and comparative adjectives. Next week, we will continue our journey with Ben through role play and direct speech.

Our Reading sessions have been an absolute hit this week, as we continue to delve into the story 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes. This week, we loved creating our own versions of Iron Man using the description from the book as well as adding in our own creative, imaginative features. We also focused on how people viewed the Iron Man in the story, reflecting, and imagining how our community would react if Iron Man came here. It certainly allowed for an interesting discussion!

In Maths, we have continued with our topic 'Multiplication and Division', using our knowledge of times tables, to complete related multiplication sentences. This came in handy when we started to investigate multiplication further, when we started to multiply two-digit numbers by one-digit numbers. We had to work hard, breaking down each question into smaller steps before combining them to solve the answer.

In PE, the wonderful Mr Brindley from Formby High school was back to take another action-packed Dodgeball lesson. We continued to develop our throwing and catching skills focusing specifically on accuracy, as well as learning about the importance of footwork skills. We also started Rounders, recapping the rules from Year 2 and exploring the different positions and their roles, all without a bat!

In RE, we started to look at our new topic ‘Jesus, the man who changed lives’ and started by looking the story of ‘Zacchaeus, the Tax Collector’. This story allowed for a great discussion, as were shocked that Jesus chose someone who was being so unkind and greedy. However, we decided that this was for the best as Jesus was able to help him correct his wrongs.

We finished the week with another exciting Art lesson. Continuing with our topic ‘Vincent Van Gough’, we explored how he used white and black to create tint and shade and how this changed depending on what he was painting. To understand this further, we sketched our own still life flowers before using watercolours to paint.
