This week has been truly magical here in Year 1, and we are so proud of you all.
At the start of the week, we were blown away by the children incredible peformance in not one but two Nativities to their parents, not including the two additonal performances to Year 5 and 6. All the children took part, saying their lines loudly and clearly for all to hear. In addition to this, the children had to act, whilst singing 6 different songs at the appropriate time, carrying on even when the music stopped. We could not be more proud of you all, you all sparkled, showing our values of Hope, Imagine and Enjoy. Never stop sparkling, Year 1!
In Maths, we used our addition and subtraction knowledge to solve some festive colour by number problems and we were blown away at how amazing the whole of Year 1 were at recalling their number facts to 10. Next week, we will continue to cement this knowledge before moving onto Geometry.
In Science, we focused on the changing winter weather and loved learning about the tempretures needed to make the rain on the ground freeze. We then vetured outside and explored how the frozen water sparkled like glitter, writing our names in the frost. We will continue our topic of Seasons as the year goes on, exploring Spring and Summer when they too arrive.
In History, we investigated our final famous nurse, Mary Seacole, and learnt how for nearly 100 years, here incredible hard work during the Crimean war was forgotton about. It took several nurses in Jamica to remind the whole world, and especially Britian about her incredible work. We then compared her to Florence Nightingale and discussed what was similar and different about both ladies.
In RE we finished off our topic of Christmas, by exploring how God gave Jesus to us, his people as a gift. We discussed what this meant with children stating that they felt Jesus was sent to us to teach us both love and respect. After, we finished off our own gifts for our parents, which we will hand out next week!

The Christmas cheer has certainly arrived in Year 1, with special help from our cheeky elf!
This cheeky elf Snowflake arrived early on Thursday morning, and has been up to no good ever since, flying around the classroom and causing a mess. We cannot wait to find out what he gets up to over the weekend. This was not our only hint of Christmas this week, with a trip to the Christmas Extravaganza on Friday. We loved taking part in the various activites, a huge thank you Team TSP for organising such a fantastic event.
In Maths, we have been focusing on Subtraction. We started by practically subtracting objects using resources and even people before moving onto written methods. This allowed us to relate the subtraction sentence to the numbers we wrote down. Next week, we will continue with this topic before moving onto Geometry before the end of term.
In RE, we used our knowledge of the Nativity stroy to help us understand the ideas of gifting. We discussed how gifts don't have to be a physical object but instead can be given through kindness, love and time. We talked about how God gave Jesus to people as a gift to us to forgive us for our mistakes. We then discussed how it feels to give and recive a gift and how both acts can be rewarding.
For History, we reflected on the two nurses from last week, before looking at a new famous nurse, Mary Seacole. We learnt about her journey and plotted her on our timeline. We were interested to see how Mary is less celebrated than Florence but also made a big impact for her time.

What a week we have had here in, Year 1! It has be full of giggles, dancing and joy.
As usual, each morning we have continued our Phonics journey, reading new books and writing fantastic sentences related to our groups story. It truly wonderful to see how much progress all the children have made.
The Nativity practice has continued this week and we cannot wait for you all to come and watch it. The children have been working so hard to say their lines confidently and remember their special dance moves. We can assure you, you will love it!
In History, we had two special visitors come and visit us in school. Florence Nightingale and Jess who is currently training to be a nurse. We were able to ask both nurses questions about their jobs and their training which enabled us to look at their similarities and differences. Did you know that during Florences time, no one was trained? It was truly wonderful to meet both ladies, although one looked slightly more familiar, who knows maybe Miss Jones is related to Florence?
In Science, we continued to investigate the four seasons, focusing this week on the season 'Winter'. We discussed how winter is nearly here and how we need to make sure we are wrapped up warm with the colder temperatures coming. We were able to look at the trees around school and discuss how soon they will be ready for winter, with less and less leaves still being on the tress.
In RE, we started to discuss the very first Christmas by reflecting on our Nativity and the story we are begining to tell.

Next Friday is the Christmas Extravaganza, and therefore, mufti.

Our week has truly been filled with kindness and we hope you have had a wonderful week too!
We started our week by looking at the story ‘Chrysanthemum’ by Keven Henkes as part of ‘Anti-Bullying Week’. The story looked at how children in her class were unkind to her because they did not like her unusual name and how this made her feel ashamed and sad until their most favourite music teacher told the class how she too was named after a flower. Reflecting on this story, we passed our class heart around the circle, crumpling it up whilst saying something unkind that someone might say to us. We were shocked with how quickly our heart was crushed into a ball. After, we passed the heart back round the circle smoothing the heart out as we said something kind. We noticed that although our heart had returned to its normal shape, it was full of wrinkles. This allowed us to discuss how just because we say kind things, people can still be hurt by words that we have previously said and how we should think carefully before saying unkind things. Continuing with our kindness theme and reflecting in ‘Random Act of Kindness Day’, we each decorated a stone, leaving a kind picture or message. We then went out into the community, leaving the stones out for people to find with the hope that we share our kindness and love with others! Please do tweet us if you find a stone!
This week in History, we were introduced to our first significant person, Florence Nightingale. We were amazed to learn that she was a nurse from 1820, and against her family’s wishes she set off to change nursing forever! We loved taking on her character, telling the doctors to clean their hospitals and wash their hands! However, we were in for a treat later in the week when Florence Nightingale actually visited school! We were able to ask her lots of exciting questions about her life and learn all about her nursing journey.
In Science, we explored our next season, Winter. We reflected on winter last year and discussed how much colder it gets during these months and how it could snow, although it rarely does here! We agreed that winter brings lots of exciting things such as Christmas and New Year but agreed that we must keep ourselves safe by wrapping up warm!
In RE we connected our learning back to previous week and reflected on the Creation story. We looked at the big question ‘Why did God create the world in this order?’ It was brilliant to see so many different answers.
We ended our week on a high with a truly magical Friday. We started the morning by creating Christmas gifts for the school Christmas market. In our houses, we created a wide range of gifts and loved joining children from across the school. In the afternoon, we celebrated Children in Need by making biscuits to share with our families.

We’ve had another fantastic week of learning in Year 1!
In RE, we continued to look at the Christian creation story and how he was careful in selecting what to add to our world. After, we thought about what we would like to add and what could make our world a better place. We were shocked to learn that we all had similar ideas with lots of ideas linking to our Collective Worship value, ‘Peace’. This meant that we could also identify and celebrate what makes us unique and special and recognise that we are all different but similar in lots of ways and how that is okay.
Before we started our new history topic, we took time unpick what the words ‘past’ and ‘present’ means. We talked about how some elements of the past we can remember, such as the death of Queen Elizabeth II but how other periods in the past, such as when she became queen, we couldn’t remember as we were not born yet. We then came up with different ways in which we could find out about the past such as talking to someone from the past, researching on the computer, reading books, and even looking at real life objects known as artefacts.
In Maths, we continued with our number bonds within 10. We started the week by writing number facts for given numbers before working together to write our own number sentences using dice. To finish the week, we looked at ‘adding more’ starting with a base number before adding an additional number, from a dice. To help us, we used our number lines and tens frames to help us.
In Science, we started looking at the 4 seasons and the weather associated with each season. We focused on our current season, Autumn, taking ourselves on an autumn walk around school and collecting items to create our own autumnal art and also to compare it to other seasons in the future. We discussed how the weather is damper this time of year, and how the lots of trees lose their leaves.
We have started to learn our Nativity songs this week ready for our two performances on the 6th December. We will continue to practice our songs and will receive our parts next week.
On Friday, we marked Rememberence Day in our class. We paused and reflected on the day and discussed why we wear a poppy and remember people who have fallen in war. Throughout the week we have reflected on this importance day, creating a poppy wreath for the church's memorial.
We ended the week on an absolute high, watching the school’s Kindness Video. We loved seeing ourselves, friends and families on the screen and couldn’t believe some of the teachers incredible (or questionable) dance moves!
'Love Reading for Kids' have released their early November newsletter. This includes a first look at their Christmas Books and Gift Guide which is full of great ideas for all readers. Books really do make the best presents so please do take a look!

It truly was a fantastic first week back full of excitement!
We started our new topic in Maths, Addition and Subtraction using part, part whole models to create number sentences. We loved using kung-fu to help us remember our symbols such as the plus sign and equals to sign, watch this space! Next week, we will continue to work on creating number sentences using practical resources.
This week in Phonics, we looked at non-fiction texts learning about a range of things such as bikes and hens! Next week, we will start reading fictions texts again.
In Art, we created our own firework art by finger painting. For this, we had to mix the primary colours to make secondary colours. We also started looking at our nee topic on buildings identifying different shapes and recognising how they fit together.
The highlight of our week has got to be performing for the Kindness video, we have bust a move and danced our way through the week. It has been truly wonderful to see the smiles on the children’s faces and the laughter we have all shared. Keep smiling Year 1.

Where has that half term gone?
We have had another fantastic week here in Year 1 and we have certainly ended it on a high, full of laughter and intrigue.
In Geography we finished looking at the 4 countries in the United Kingdom focusing on Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. We loved investigating their different cuisines, dances, and famous landmarks. We then investigated our local environment, look at key features on a map before identifying building as we explored.
We loved Music this week, finishing our topic ‘Rap’ with an epic rap battle! Two groups step forwarded to battle it out, reciting our song ‘Hey You!’ with some incredible dance moves to match.
In Maths, we began our new topic Addition and Subtraction focusing on how two different parts make up a whole number. We began on by getting practical, using beanbags and hoops to identify different parts and how they make our whole number. Later in the week, we use counters and part, part wholes to solve addition problems. After half term, we will continue to focus on our new topic and will begin to use a range of equipment to solve more complex reasoning and problem-solving questions.
Computing Day was a highlight of our week! We loved using the iPads to learn about online safety as well as learning new skills. We learnt the importance of keeping information private from people and how, sharing data and images online can hurt not only ourselves but others. Then we learnt about how we could communicate with other online, learning how to write an email and even sending one to Mrs Pringle!
We absolutely loved our visit from Unite, Formby for our Self-Defence session this week. It was incredible and taught us some basic self-defence skills including releases from ‘grabs’. Watch out parents! We also loved the annual TSP Disco, with its spooky theme! The glow in the dark theme made it more exciting, it truly was an incredible event, thank you to all involved!
Attached to this blog, and also uploaded onto Tapestry, you will find Year 1’s Virtual Classroom. As well as this, should you wish to practice spellings, please find common exception words attached to this blog. Year 1 will not be tested on these spellings.
Year 1, you have been a pleasure to teach this half term and I cannot wait to see what the rest of the term, and year, has in store for us. From all of us here in Year 1, have a wonderful and restful half term!

Another incredibly busy week here in Year 1!
On Monday, we were delighted to welcome back the fantastic Dom from Active Sefton for a healthy habit and smoothy making session. He talked to us about the importance of being healthy by making the right choices with exercise, food and even hygiene. After, we helped Dom make and drink our very own delicious smoothies! Thank you, Dom!
Monday marked Hello Yellow Day! And we were delighted to come together with the whole school to spread joy, positivity and happiness to our peers and staff across the school. To do this we each designed and decorated our own positive flags which were then added to the TSP positivity pathway, we then walked along the path filling our cup full of joy.
In Science, we focused on the 5 senses of the human body. We started by identifying the different body parts we would have to use to access these senses before exploring them through a series of investigations. It was so much fun and who knew some of us would even like tomato juice!
In PE we continued to practice our ball skills, working with our partners to control the balls using the different methods we have learnt over the past few weeks; dribbling the ball with our feet, bouncing it and even rolling it!
Continuing to reflect on our monthly value of Generosity, in Collective worship this week, we watched the story of ‘The Rainbow Fish’ reflecting as a class on the moral of the story. We agreed that at first, Rainbow Fish was being selfish and being unkind showing off, and afterwards, when he had shared with his friends that he felt better. We discussed how in our classroom we are generous all the time when we share our toys and time. In our RE lesson, we focused on the Jewish harvest festival, Sukkot and created our very own Sukkah. We learnt that Jewish people, during this time, eat meals and spend time with their family and friends in their Sukkah during this time, so we decided too as well!

Wow, another fantastic week here in Year 1, full of laughter and fun!
We continued to look at our topic Harvest in Year 1, and this week we planted our very own vegetables which we will harvest when they are ready in the new year. A new month brings a new Collective Worship value to focus on, and this month we will be looking at generosity. We talked about how our topic harvest links to generosity and how during this time, we give to charities and food banks to help less fortunate than ourselves. We then made our own flowers to give to people around the school as a token of kindness and giving.
In Maths, we continued with out Place Value theme and focused on finding one more than a given number as well as moving up and down the number line. We loved getting active for our lessons, creating our own number tracks and, with our partners, counting on from a given number.
In Geography, we started look at the four countries in the United Kingdom with a specific focus on ‘England’. We looked at what makes England special, its capital city, flower, famous food and even their traditional dance! We absolutely loved having a go at Morris Dancing working with our partner to complete given steps. However, it is safe to say the best activity was eating the scones!
We embarked on our ‘Mini-Marathon’ in support of all the incredible people that completed this fantastic event at the weekend. We look to the playground and completed an epic 4 laps! We have challenged ourselves to do 6 next time. Watch this space! This helped us with building up on stamina in PE, focusing on our breathing, getting our heart going and most importantly our ball skills. We continued to develop our catching, reminding ourselves, and our friends, that we must keep our hands close together when catching. It was, as ever, great fun.

We have had another fantastic week of learning here in Year 1 and we cannot wait to see what next week holds!
In Maths, we have continued to look at our topic Place Value and have been focusing on representing numbers in a range of different ways including number names. This week we looked at using our tens frames to help us, recognising patterns to help us create number sentences. Next week, we will look at counting on from a given number as well as one more and one less.
In English, we have continued to develop our Reading and Writing during our Phonics lessons. Each group has focused text and a writing goal each week whilst also incorporating their spelling and sound knowledge.
We loved learning about the 7 continents this week, thinking of a variety of actions to help us remember their names and specific information about each one. Next week, the 4 countries in the United Kingdom, focusing specifically on Northern Ireland.
During our RE lesson, we focused on Harvest and were shocked to hear about the problems faced by families across the world in countries like India where there has been flooding. We learnt that although we had a good Harvest, they did not, and this causes food shortages. We then wrote prayers to thank God for our Harvest this year and to remind us how lucky we are.
In Science, we had great fun labelling our partners with post it notes for their different body parts. We were amazing how many different parts we knew including our shins! After, we labelled our own bodies in our books. It was truly a fun lesson!
We were thrilled to drop everything on Monday and Tuesday and take part in our very own school Read-a-thon! Over the course of two days, we ensured that we filled our Read-a-thon session with books we loved to read as well as an epic retelling of the stroy Tyrannosaurus Drip by Julia Donaldson.

What a brilliant week of fun and learning well done, Year 1!
In Maths, we continued to explore our topic ‘Place Value’ carefully counting objects from larger groups. We practiced our 1 to 1 correspondence whilst answering a range of reasoning and problem-solving questions. We loved using our iPads to solve these questions on Seesaw.
In English, we explored a new book and developed our writing skills using a range of sources and genres with the help of our book!
On Wednesday we created our own gingerbread men as part of Jean for Genes day. We carefully mixed our ingredients together before cutting them and decorating them in their very own stylish jeans. We also decorated a class pair of jeans using a range of resources to make our own unique style!
On Friday, we sang our hearts out for our Harvest Service! We have loved learning these hymns over the past few weeks and certainly will miss dancing to the Harvest Samba, we hope you all had a little dance in church too!
This was not our only exciting adventure on Friday, after church we put on our walking shoes and ventured into the village to visit our local travel agents as part of our Geography topic. We loved learning about how they book holidays and even had a go ourselves, we were amazed to learn how many different countries we can travel to from the UK.
Year 1 Reminders
- PE lessons will take place each Wednesday and Thursday during the Autumn Term. Please ensure children are dressed in their PE kits on these days.
- Some children may initially take home the same reading books as they did last year, this is to ensure consolidation and fluency when reading. Please do not be worried about this.

We have had another fantastic week here in Year 1, full of fun and laughter!
We started the week by marking Roald Dahl day and were inspired by his fantastic story ‘The Enormous Crocodile’. We knew that we needed to tell the whole school that a naughty crocodile was on the loose so decided to create our very own wanted posters! We also decided to get crafty, creating our own Roly Poly birds and a very, very ENORMOUS crocodile.
In Maths, we began to look at our new topic ‘Place Value’. We started by revisiting sorting and counting objects. We had to think carefully as not to count the same object twice. Next week, we will continue to focus on place value, counting objects from larger groups using 1 to 1 correspondence.
In English, we enjoyed exploring our new books and developing our writing skills, saying, and holding our sentences carefully before writing using appropriate punctuation.
This week we started our new RE topic Harvest, by investigate how the food we eat come from different parts of the world. We each created our own pita pizzas by first identify where the topping came from before adding it to our pizza. We amazed that some of our topics came from as far as Morocco and recognised that packaging with the flag of Great Britain on, is produced here.
In Music, we have been working hard to learn our harvest songs in preparation for Friday. Our favourite song at the moment is the ‘Harvest Samba’ we just cannot stop ourselves from dancing!

What an amazing start to our new school year! We have had the most wonderful few days getting to know about our new year group and settling into our new classroom.
We had a very exciting start to Year 1, when an unusual package was delievered to our classroom! We were eager to find out what was inside and were thrilled to find Disney's 'Encanto' DVD and a special message from the Madrigal family. We soon learnt that the family were in a little bit of bother and needed our help to save their magical house, through special challenges linked to our school values. For every challenge completed, a new magical door was opened, saving the miracle candle. Year 1 were very excited about their mission and could not wait to get started!
We used our school value 'Serve' to think like Mirabel and how her actions are similar to Jesus', spreading kindness and love to not only her family but the world. We then had to walk in Jesus' footsteps and think of how we could make the world a better place, showing respect and love. We then focused on our values 'Hope' and 'Nurture' for our next two missions; being brave and corageous like Isabella who branched out to try new things and get better; and Louisa for recognising her special qualities, whilst recognising our own. We were delighted to hear from Mirabel on Friday afternoon, learning that we had been successful in completing all the challenges and saving their house!
On Friday, we loved creating our own cakes to recognise the Queen and everything she had done for us during her 70 years of service. We talked about how it was ok to feel sad and worried, identifying who we could talk to if that was the case.
We cannot forget about our incredible start to PE, focusing on fundamental skills specifically developing our jumping skills: two feet to two feet. We loved the tackling our obstacle course, who knew it could be such fun?! Later in the week, we switched our focus to ball skills, practising our throwing and catching skills with a specific focus on accuracy.
A poster containing 100 recommended reads for Year 1 children has been attached to this blog. By providing 100 quality texts at an age appropriate level, this list may be useful when choosing your child's next book. We hope it inspires the children to continue on in their reading journeys whilst further encouraging a lifelong love of books and stories.

Wow! What a week we have had, to bring a wonderful year to an end. This week, we have enjoyed celebrating with our friends and have taken part in many fun end of year activities. We brought our smoothie creations to life and enjoyed preparing, making and drinking them. We had lots of fun taking part in our Computing Day, applying the mathematics skills we have learnt throughout the year, to use maths apps on the iPads and laptops. We also graduated as Young Leaders, having completed our final part of the award. It really has been a brilliant week!
We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge well done to our Year 1 children for always working so incredibly hard and shining like the stars they are. They have made us so proud and it has been such a pleasure to have watched them grow and flourish, during their time in Year 1. We wish the children every success in Year 2 and we are confident that they will continue to shine brightly throughout the next part of their learning journey.
Myself and Mrs Giles would also like to thank you for all of your thoughtful gifts and well wishes. They are very much appreciated!
I am overwhelmed by your generosity and kind words, as I go on to my next adventure. The children have made this year so very special and I will cherish so many wonderful memories from my time with them and the past six years at Trinity St. Peter’s. I will certainly miss our Trinity St. Peter’s family and wish you all so much happiness for the future.

And so, our penultimate week in Year 1 has come to an end and what a brilliant week it has been! As always, our little authors have written some wonderful stories and used their multicoloured thinking hats to inspire some truly creative ideas, based on the story, “Goldilocks and Just the One Bear”, by Leigh Hodgkinson. Year 1 have been working hard to learn how to tell the time and, this week, have been applying their new knowledge to tell the time to the hour and half past the hour. In addition to this, the children have enjoyed creating some beautiful collages, inspired by their trip to the farm last week, and have been busy writing kindness postcards, to send to the elderly residents of Formby, as part of their Young Leaders Award.
In Collective Worship, we discussed our new monthly value of “Responsibility”. Having used our black thinking hats to share our existing knowledge of the value, we then used our yellow thinking hats to reflect on the responsibilities we have. Many fantastic ideas were shared such as looking after our belongings at school, putting our rubbish in the bin and tidying our bedrooms. We then enjoyed taking part in a craft activity, to share the responsibilities we have when we are at home. We designed and decorated our own houses, before opening them up to write our responsibilities inside.
This week, Year 1 began their Design and Technology project, for which they were set the challenge of designing and making a healthy drink. Year 1 began their project by conducting some market research and they gathered data about the class’ favourite fruits. They then spent time taste testing a variety of fruits, to help them choose their ingredients. From then on, the children began carefully designing their delicious healthy drinks. They thought about their favourite flavours and took part in some excellent discussions about the flavours that may or may not work together. We are looking forward to bringing our designs to life next week and to hopefully enjoying our delicious creations!

- This week the children enjoyed a visit from Sarah from Formby library who informed the children about this year's summer reading challenge.They were all very excited! We hope they will be able to enjoy the reading challenge and celebrate this with us when they return to school in September.

What a fantastic week we have had, here in Year 1! We have been busy mathematicians, concluding our topic on money and beginning to learn about time. We have enjoyed continuing to explore our focus text, “Goldilocks and Just the One Bear” and have had lots of fun using our multicoloured thinking hats, to plan our own versions of the story, ready to begin writing next week. Amongst this, our little scientists have loved exploring different materials to make their own umbrellas, made us all truly proud when competing in Sports Day and began the final stage of their Young Leaders Award, the action project!
In RE this week, we enjoyed our final lesson focusing on Joseph. Using our black thinking hats, we enjoyed retelling the story and discussing the different characters and events. We then used our yellow thinking hats, to reflect on lessons that could be learnt from the story, for example, forgiveness and trust. We spoke about why these lessons are so important and shared our experiences of when we have experienced them in our own life. To help us remember this special story, we then had lots of fun working together to create our very own Year 1 dreamcoat. Everyone carefully designed and decorated their own piece of “fabric”, before coming together to construct the coat, which is a truly beautiful reminder of the story of Joseph.
We had the most wonderful end to a very busy week and, on Friday, enjoyed a brilliant day at Tatton Park. As part of our Geography topic, “Why do we need farms?”, we took part in the fantastic workshop, “A Day in the Life of our Farm”, to experience first-hand what farms are used for, the work that goes into maintaining a farm and where our food comes from. The children had a fun-filled morning learning how to milk a cow by hand and visiting and feeding some of the farm’s animals. From cheeky, escaping piglets, to some very cute donkeys, we had a great time getting up close and personal with the animals. We felt so lucky to have been there to meet two new baby goats, who arrived during our visit! After lunch, we had a lovely afternoon exploring the gardens and learning where our fruit and vegetables come from. We were amazed to think about the journey that our food goes on, before it gets to our plates. It truly was a brilliant day with so much fantastic learning!

Yet another fantastic week, here in Year 1! We have had a busy week developing our comprehension skills in English and learning all about money, coins and notes, in Maths. To celebrate Summer’s Commonwealth Games, we took part in a whole school “Lap of Hope”, after having written “Power Pledges” to share our hopes for the world we want to see. As well as this, Year 1 had the most amazing end to their week, attending our school Summer Fair and having endless amounts of fun on the many different stalls!
Our unit on Joseph continues and, this week in RE, we explored the theme of dreams. Using our green thinking hats, we wondered how all those around Joseph felt, hearing Joseph speak about his dreams and then seeing them come true. We agreed that, for some, this would make them feel happy and comforted knowing that positive things were coming. However, for others, dreams that were not so positive would have upset and worried them. This led us into a brilliant discussion about the kinds of dreams we have for ourselves that we hope will come true. We enjoyed sharing our dreams for the future with the class and it was so wonderful to hear all the wonderful aspirations the children have for themselves. From becoming actresses and footballers, to archaeologists and scientists, there were plenty of big dreams! We hope that, like Joseph, our dreams come true as well.
This week, our little scientists had the most fantastic afternoon led by Mr Kaye, from Formby High School Science Department. Feeling like real scientists in a lab, the children put on their protective goggles, ready to carry out some exciting experiments. The children began with a density experiment, testing the density of different liquids. Slowly layering up the liquids in their test tube, the children had to ensure they put them in the correct order, with the heaviest at the bottom and the lightest on top. This created a fantastic rainbow liquid and we were amazed to see the different colours layered on top of each other. We then had lots of fun taking part in a chromatography experiment. We carefully positioned Skittles around a petri dish and added water. We watched in awe, as the colours dissolved and four different coloured sections appeared in the water. For our final experiment, we made hoverboards! Using a CD, bottle top and balloon, we had so much fun blowing up the balloon and releasing the air when on the bottle top, to make the CD hover across our table. It certainly was an afternoon to remember!

What a wonderful week it has been, here in Year 1! We have loved exploring our new focus text, “Goldilocks and Just the One Bear”, by Leigh Hodgkinson, in English and have been busy exploring the story setting to help us to create our own versions of “Princess Avenue”. We have been learning about positional language in Maths, dancing along to the “Cha Cha Slide”, to help us remember our left and right! As well as this, we’ve had an extra special visitor, taken to the golf course for our new PE unit, Tri-Golf, and continued to explore the importance of working together as a team, focusing on how all of the pieces in a team go together to make it work, for our Young Leaders Award.
In RE, Year 1 continued to focus on the story of Joseph and, this week, explored how forgiveness is an important lesson that we can take from the story. We recognised that Joseph’s brothers had treated him terribly and, for Joseph, it would be hard to forgive them for what they had done. We were pleased that Joseph was able to find it in his heart to forgive and agreed that it would have taken a lot for him to do so, after all that he had been through. We discussed the importance of forgiveness and used our yellow thinking hats to reflect on times that we have forgiven others and been forgiven ourselves. We then created hearts that revealed a hidden message of forgiveness. This showed us that everybody has the power in their hearts to forgive somebody for the mistakes they may have made, even if sometimes they may have to dig a little deeper to find forgiveness. We connected our discussions, surrounding forgiveness, to our school value of ‘Serve’, as we reflected on how showing forgiveness is following in the footsteps of Jesus.
We were so very lucky to have a visit from author, Sean Perkins, this week. Sean brought along his brand-new book, “Oscar and Ben”, which we loved listening to him read. To add to the excitement, the main characters, Oscar and Ben, were there to read the story with him too! They were VERY funny and a little cheeky, so they had us all laughing at their silliness. The story told us all about their adventures in their woodland den and we loved hearing what they got up to and the tricks they played on their friends. After listening to the story, we had the opportunity to ask Sean some questions. There were so many excellent questions such as “What made you want to become a writer?” and “Did you enjoy writing your story?” It was great to hear what Sean had to say and we were really interested to learn about his career.

Welcome back everyone! It has been such a fantastic first week back, here in Year 1. Our Phonics Superstars have been busy applying their knowledge, to help them solve lots of phonics puzzles and complete phonics challenges, in English. In Maths, the children have enjoyed learning about finding quarters and loved taking part in a rather delicious demonstration of finding fractions of amounts. As well as all this, Year 1 have enjoyed exploring our new monthly value, “Truthfulness”, and have created a pledge of honesty, having listened to the story, “The Empty Pot”. They have also been letting their creative juices flow to create some amazing animal art.
In RE, Year 1 began their new topic focusing on the story of Joseph, from the Old Testament. The children put on their green thinking hats to discuss the powerful message from the story and had a fantastic discussion about the importance of always making the right choices and how our choices can impact another person’s feelings. Year 1 then enjoyed designing their very own technicolour dreamcoats.
In Art, Year 1 continued to explore the work of Henri Rousseau. They investigated his work in great detail, to see how he likes to camouflage animals within his paintings. The children then put on their multicoloured thinking hats, to help them think creatively. They thoroughly enjoyed creating their own jungled themed painting, with two animals of their choice camouflaged into the background. Their attention to detail, choice of patterns and use of colour really brought their paintings to life and blew us all away!

Wow! What a wonderful final week of half term it has been! Year 1 have been very busy, as always, completing their wonderful stories inspired by Mini Grey’s “Toys in Space”, learning how to divide by sharing into groups and creating their own e-books, for “Computing Day”. As well as all this, the children enjoyed an amazing Mad Science assembly, which took them on a journey to Mars, experiencing many incredible Science experiments along the way.
In RE, Year 1 brought their topic on baptism to a close. Wearing their black thinking hats, they recalled all that they had learnt this half term and enjoyed playing “Two Facts and a Fib”, to test their knowledge. They then created their own circle maps, which were extremely detailed and showcased all the wonderful learning that had taken place throughout the topic.
On Friday, the children had the most wonderful day celebrating The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. To begin the celebrations, we enjoyed a class talent show, during which, children auditioned for a place in the live finals of “TSP’s Got Talent”. Year 1 blew us away with their incredible acts and bravery when performing in front of an audience. We had lots of acts, including magicians, gymnasts, dancers and martial arts! The children were incredible and made it a very difficult decision, when it came to deciding just two acts to represent our class, later that day. We were amazed by all the performances and smiled from ear to ear, as we sat back and enjoyed the fabulous entertainment. It was then time for a celebratory afternoon tea. Sat at our banquet table fit for royalty, we enjoyed a cup of tea and a piece of cake… Victoria sponge, of course! After lunch, the moment had finally arrived. It was time for “TSP’s Got Talent”! Judges ready and the Royal Family in attendance, our Year 1 acts bravely, confidently and wonderfully represented our class. Our whole class was bursting with pride, as we watched our friends perform.
Well done for another brilliant half term, Year 1! You have worked so hard and have continued to make your teachers very proud. Have a great half term and enjoy your jubilee celebrations!

We have had a great week, here in Year 1! We were very excited to transform into the wonderful authors that we are and begin writing our own stories, inspired by “Toys in Space”, by Mini Grey. We have started learning about multiplication in Maths, experimenting with repeated addition to add groups of the same number and learning how to solve calculations using arrays.
In RE, Year 1 continued their topic on baptism and explored the meaning of making a promise; an important part of a baptism service. Wearing their green thinking hats, we discussed all the feelings surrounding promises, such as what it feels like to make a promise, how it feels to keep one and how we would feel if someone was to break a promise. Year 1 then created their very own promise jar and filled it with promises they wanted to make to themselves. We had some fantastic ideas such as “I promise to work as hard as I can” and “I promise to always be kind”.
Our little scientists have been working hard and, this week, we went on a school safari to find invertebrates. Year 1 worked extremely hard, wearing their black thinking hats, to use their new knowledge to find and identify minibeasts. There were some very brave children, as they used scientific equipment such as pooters and magnifying glasses, to get up-close and personal with their new friends! Year 1 enjoyed observing them very closely and comparing lots of different invertebrates.

Yet another fantastic week, here in Year 1! We have been busy making equal groups, in preparation for learning how to multiply and divide, and we have enjoyed planning a party, delicious meals included, for the characters in the story, “Toys in Space”. We have also enjoyed opening our magical toybox and dancing like different toys, in PE, and exploring the big question, “Is it better to be a child now than in the past?”, as part of this half term’s History unit.
In RE, Year 1 continued to develop their knowledge of baptism. The children had a fantastic lesson wearing their black thinking hats to recall all the facts they have learned about baptism. They then went on to draw and label a picture of a Christian baptism. There were some fantastic drawings and all the children worked so hard to recreate a Christian baptism, being sure to label all the key features, such as the holy candle and the font.
This week, in recognition of “Mental Health Week”, Year 1 have explored the theme of loneliness. Having read the story, “The Very Lonely Firefly”, by Eric Carle, we used our green thinking hats to have a wonderful discussion about the impact of loneliness and how it feels to be lonely. We used our yellow thinking hats to reflect on our own experiences of loneliness and shared the different things that helped us to feel better. It was from these discussions that we realised the importance of looking out for one another and how, by coming together, we can stop people feeling lonely. Inspired by Eric Carle’s story, we then made a class picture that included thirty dragonflies, each with a “light” made up of our fingerprints. This beautiful picture is now displayed on our wall, to remind us that we all have a part to play in making sure people don’t feel lonely. It only takes one person to approach someone sat by themselves, to make a big difference!

What a brilliant week it’s been, here in Year 1! From writing letters to aliens in English, to exploring capacity in Maths, the children have been very busy and, as always, working hard. In addition to this, Year 1 have loved getting back to one of their favourite sports, Speed Stacking, in PE, enjoyed learning about the wonderful work of Henri Rousseau, in Art, and have continued to explore the importance of teamwork, as part of their Young Leaders Award.
In RE, Year 1 continued to learn about baptism and discussed that this special event is when a person or a child’s family makes a commitment to belong to the church family and follow Jesus’ teaching. At baptism, people or godparents on behalf of the child, promise to start afresh and live a Christian life. They want to belong. As a class, we unpicked the term “belong” and had an excellent discussion about what it means. We understood that belonging means being a part of something and we put on our green thinking hats, to share how it feels to belong to the many wonderful groups that we are part of, for example, our family, sports teams and after school clubs. We soon recognised that we belong to our Year 1 class, a very special and wonderful group to belong to! We discussed how we all fit together to make the perfect team and, just like a jigsaw, if one of us was to be removed, we just would not be complete! Year 1 each designed their very own jigsaw piece, making it special and unique to them. Once completed, we had to find our friends with the missing pieces to our jigsaw puzzle, before making a whole jigsaw to show that we belong with each other!
Year 1 had a sticky surprise, on entering the classroom on Thursday! They were greeted by a rather slimy and dirty letter, which turned out to be from space. Having continued to explore “Toys in Space”, by Mini Grey, Year 1 wanted to write letters on behalf of the alien Hoctopize, to his missing friend, Cuddles. Year 1 wrote some fantastic letters on behalf of Hoctopize and, much to their surprise, they received a reply from Cuddles, which contained lots of clues to help Hoctopize find his beloved favourite toy. We are looking forward to seeing how things unfold next week! Can Year 1 find Cuddles?!

Yet another fantastic week, here in Year 1! The children continue to develop their knowledge and understanding of measurement and, this week, learnt how to use balancing scales to measure mass. Never without their multicoloured thinking hats, Year 1 have thoroughly enjoyed further exploring “Toys in Space”, by Mini Grey, and have been working hard to write excellent character descriptions and diary entries. The children have been making our Sentence Superheroes proud, using capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and, of course, our special Year 1 joining word, “and”. As well as all of this, Year 1 have had lots of fun taking part in an Ultimate Kids games session, working on their teamwork skills as part of our Young Leaders Award and putting our dancing shoes back on in PE.
In RE, wearing our black thinking hats, our wonderful Year Ones used all their new knowledge of baptisms to take part in a baptism themed, “True of False”, during which they had to identify if the pictures they were being shown were a real baptism or not. They then took part in a whole class discussion to share what they think would make a baptism special to them. The children put on their multi coloured thinking hats to design their perfect day, including the guests they would invite. They enjoyed sharing why their chosen people are so important to them and, wearing their green thinking hats, explained how it would make them feel to have their loved ones there.
Year 1 are continuing to develop into the most wonderful Young Leaders and this week they faced a challenge to test an extremely important skill, teamwork. They were challenged to work together as a team to build a spaghetti and marshmallow tower. When the time was up, we shared how we got on and discussed the following questions:
- Was the challenge difficult?
- How did you work together as a team?
- What would you do differently next time?
- Did working with someone else help you to complete the challenge?
From this challenging but fun activity, we have learnt that every member of a team is important and when working together, great things can be achieved. The lesson was a true reflection of our motto, ‘Leaders are better together’!

We have had the most wonderful start to the Summer term and we are so excited to have welcomed the children back after the Spring break. Our Year 1 superstars returned to the classroom ready and raring to go and, this week, they have been busy learning about measuring length in Maths, beginning to explore their new text, “Toys in Space”, by Mini Grey, in English and learning about Rosa Parks and how she demonstrated perseverance, as part of our Young Leaders Award. It really has been a busy week, however, as always; the children have worked so incredibly hard!
In RE, we have been learning about baptism and why it is so special. Using our black thinking hats, Year 1 have been exploring what it means to be baptised and the process that takes place within the church. Year 1 discussed all the wonderful things that baptism can bring to an individual and the importance of carrying the light of Christ within our hearts. The children enjoyed learning about the main features of a baptism and what each aspect of the service symbolises.
On Friday, we celebrated “Earth Day” and, using our yellow thinking hats, reflected on God’s wonderful creation, sharing what we love about our planet and what we feel makes it so special. Recognising that we all speak so positively about our incredible world, we discussed the importance of keeping it safe and doing what we can to protect it from harm. The children shared lots of ways in which we could demonstrate our school value of “Serve”, to follow in Jesus’ footsteps and have an active part to play in protecting our planet, for example, putting litter in the bin, walking to places and putting out bird feeders for the wildlife that visits our gardens. With so many wonderful ideas, the children then created their own class wreath out of their handprints. On each of their handprints, the children wrote a promise, to explain how their hands are going to help protect our planet. For example, “This hand will turn off the lights when they are not being used” and “This hand will recycle plastic bottles”. Whilst an important reminder of how we can help the planet, the wreath also acts as a promise to God that we will do what we can to look after the amazing world he has created for us.
