Year 3 - Autumn 1- Week 2
Date: 10th Sep 2026 @ 8:17pm
What a fantastic and jam-packed week we have had in Year 3!
This week, we have been celebrating reading and our love of books. We enjoyed taking part in a range of reading activities in our wonderful bell tent and had the opportunity to visit the Book Fair. We have also been enjoying reading Harry the Poisonous Centipede and have begun a brand-new class read, Charlie Turns into a Chicken.
In Maths, we have been exploring place value with numbers up to 1,000. We have been developing our understanding of the value of each digit and putting our knowledge into practice by solving a range of reasoning and problem-solving challenges.
We have had a particularly exciting week in English! We have been learning all about similes and used our new knowledge to write our own simile poems. We then moved on to planning and writing a detailed character description of a fish, inspired by our quality text When the Ocean Meets the Sky.
We have also been experimenting with changing our expression and intonation when reading aloud. This was great fun and helped us to think carefully about how our voices can bring a story and its characters to life!
Our RE theme is “What Does It Mean to Be Called by God?”. This week, we explored the role of prophets and discussed the different skills and qualities they might need to carry out their important work.
In Science, we have been learning about nutrition. We explored the five major food groups and identified the different foods that belong to each group. We understand why eating a balanced diet is so important for keeping our bodies healthy.
In PE, we have started our new units on gymnastics and hockey. We have had two fantastic lessons developing new skills and practising our techniques. During Outdoor Learning this week, we put our observational skills to the test. We became artists and created drawings of our surroundings, paying close attention to light, dark, shading and detail. It was wonderful to see everyone taking the time to really observe the world around them.
We have also begun a brand-new musical adventure this year as we started learning to play the djembe drums! We had a wonderful time exploring the instruments, finding different sounds and beginning to play together as a class.
Our updated Virtual Classroom is attached for you to access. It contains useful resources, information and links that you and your child can use throughout the year. Your child will also be bringing home their Google Classroom login details very soon. Throughout the year, Google Classroom will be used to share useful resources, activities and information for your child to access at home.
