Outdoor Learning & Forest School
Spending time outdoors is an essential part of children’s development. Fresh air, open space and connection with the natural world all contribute positively to physical health and mental wellbeing. Outdoor experiences help to reduce stress, improve mood and build resilience, while also encouraging curiosity and a sense of wonder. Being outside allows children to be active, explore freely and develop confidence in themselves and their abilities.
Through outdoor learning, children also develop a wide range of important life skills. These include teamwork, problem-solving, communication and independence. Risk-taking in a safe and supported environment helps children to build judgement and responsibility, while perseverance and adaptability are strengthened through real-life challenges. Learning outdoors is active, hands-on and engaging, enabling children to make meaningful connections and deepen their understanding.
At Trinity St Peter’s, we are proud to make full use of our outdoor environment to enhance learning. We have a wonderful outdoor classroom, complete with a fire circle and shelter, as well as raised beds where children can grow and care for plants. Wherever possible, teachers plan opportunities for learning across the curriculum to take place outside. Whether investigating in maths, exploring scientific concepts, or creating imaginative writing through nature, these experiences bring learning to life in exciting and memorable ways while encouraging collaboration and curiosity.
'Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better’ – Albert Einstein
Forest School
As part of our outdoor learning offer, we also provide Forest School sessions. These are led by Mrs Bevin, who is a qualified Level 3 Forest School practitioner, alongside Mrs Houghton and Miss Jones, who are currently training towards their Level 3 qualifications. Forest School is a child-centred approach to learning that takes place in the natural environment, with a focus on long-term, regular sessions.
Forest School encourages children to explore, take supported risks and learn through practical, hands-on experiences. Activities may include building shelters, using simple tools, lighting fires safely, creating nature art, identifying plants and wildlife, and developing survival and teamwork skills. Through these experiences, children build confidence, independence and a strong sense of self.
Most importantly, Forest School nurtures a deep connection with nature and a love of the outdoors. It provides children with the time and space to explore, reflect and grow, supporting both their academic learning and their personal development.
