Nursery - Autumn 1 Week 3

What another wonderful week we have had in Nursery! Our little learners continue to settle beautifully into school life, growing in confidence, independence and curiosity as they get to know one another, make new friends and discover all that Nursery has to offer.
Our PE lessons are going amazingly well, and this week we have been learning how to navigate space and move safely around our area. We certainly had lots of fun putting this into practice as we went on an imaginary driving adventure all around Formby! We carefully followed the 20 mile per hour speed limit and encountered all sorts of things along the way - oncoming traffic, speed bumps, rain and even some tricky roundabouts! We then took a little trip onto the motorway, where naturally we could travel a little faster! Before returning home, we stopped to fill up with petrol and then carefully reverse parked onto our driveway. Throughout our adventure, we remembered the importance of keeping ourselves safe by wearing our seatbelts. What a lot of learning, movement and imagination packed into one PE session!
It has also been a very ‘dotty’ week as we celebrated International Dot Day and enjoyed the wonderful story ‘The Dot’ by Peter H. Reynolds. We met Vashti, who was unsure about her ability to draw, but with a little encouragement she was brave enough to simply begin with a dot. Before she knew it, her artwork unfolded and she discovered where her imagination could take her. This linked beautifully with our SHINE friend Leo and our conversations about being brave, having a go and not always knowing what something might become until we begin.
Nursery have loved making their own marks and exploring where their creativity might take them, using a variety of different media. I do have to say, paint proved exceptionally popular, especially when it involved little fingers and hands! There has been lots of wonderful exploration, experimentation and pride as the children have discovered that their marks and ideas can become something of their very own.
In Early Listening, we have been thinking about the body part we need to listen with - our ears! We then put our listening skills to the test by going on a listening walk around our outdoor area. We listened carefully for all the different sounds we could hear and noticed something particularly interesting - some sounds began quietly, became louder and then gradually became quiet again. Our SHINE friend Meta helped us to wonder why this might be, encouraging the children to listen closely, think and share their ideas.
In Maths, we have been learning a new and very useful word - ‘match’. We have enjoyed matching blocks, buttons, shoes and socks and finding the ones that are the same. We discovered that when two things match, they can make a pair. It has been lovely to see the children beginning to notice matching objects within their everyday environment too.
Alongside all of this wonderful learning, our children are becoming increasingly independent. They are beginning to know where their belongings belong, take greater responsibility for looking after their things and show such lovely care and consideration towards their friends. We are seeing those early friendships beginning to blossom, with children learning to listen, wait, share, help and enjoy being together.
What a fabulous week we have had - full of movement, imagination, listening, creativity, friendship and lots of wonderful little moments of discovery. We are so proud of how our Nursery family is growing together.
