Nursery - Autumn 1 Week 4
Date: 24th Sep 2026 @ 7:22pm
What a fabulous week we have had in Nursery! We entered our classroom on Monday with the biggest, smiliest faces as we got ready for our individual photographs - and what super-star smilers we were! We then took our PE session outdoors, enjoying lots of team games which encouraged us to move safely around our space while listening carefully and following instructions. Our favourite was definitely our ‘shapes’ game, which had us moving, stopping and thinking about the shape we needed to find!
Back in class, our learning has turned very much towards Autumn. We shared what we already knew about this wonderful season and linking with Harvest we were absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to explore and sit in a real tractor! Naturally, it was declared the “BIG RED TRACTOR!” A huge thank you to Mr Lloyd for giving us such a wonderful, hands-on experience. It really helped to bring our discussions about farming, harvest and where our food comes from to life.
We have been busy looking for signs of Autumn all around us, and many children have brought in their own special autumn treasures from home to share with their friends. We have loved listening to the wonderful descriptive words the children have used to tell us about their finds, as well as hearing about some of the rather unexpected places they discovered them! Our learning environment has been transformed into a wonderful Autumnal scene, filled with farm animals, farms, seasonal fruits and vegetables and of course, ‘The Little Red Hen’.
Our learning has been busy across the curriculum too. In Maths, we have been exploring positional language, using a class teddy to help us investigate and describe where he is hiding and where things are. We have been having great fun discovering who is under, over, beside, behind, in front of and next to teddy! We have also been developing our listening skills in Early Listening, particularly enjoying exploring sounds through drumming. Using a variety of sticks and spoons, we experimented with different surfaces and discovered how the sounds changed depending on what we tapped. There was lots of listening, noticing, comparing and of course, plenty of enthusiastic drumming!
The children have particularly enjoyed exploring and talking about harvest and sharing their thoughts about different foods and their own likes and dislikes. We have even used some of our seasonal fruits and vegetables for printing, creating beautiful patterns in lots of wonderful autumnal shades.
Inspired by our tractor visit, our farm has become a very busy place! The children have created their own simple storylines and have loved acting out ‘The Little Red Hen’. There has been a sea of hands reaching up whenever we have asked who would like a turn - everyone wanted to be part of the story!
And, of course, we couldn't explore ‘The Little Red Hen’ without making time for some bread tasting! We enjoyed exploring a wonderful selection of breads, including sliced, flatbreads, pitta, flatbreads, crumpets, wraps and baguettes. We talked about the different shapes, textures and tastes and shared our own preferences - although there certainly wasn't much left to discuss once the tasting began… not a crumb was left in sight!
What a wonderful week it has been, filled with exploration, conversation, imagination, new experiences and lots and lots of learning. Most of all, it has been the delight, excitement and beautiful smiles on those little faces that has made this week so special.
Warm wishes,
Mrs Grayson and the Nursery team
