A Week of Spiky Surprises, Magical Adventures and Cosy Cuddles!

What a wonderful week we have had in Nursery as we bring our very first half term together to a close! It has been filled with curious discoveries, imaginative adventures, lovely family moments and plenty of reasons to smile.

In PE, we became little hedgehogs and snuffled our way around 'space', exploring different ways of moving as we searched for autumn leaves and tasty treats to take back to our cosy hedgehog homes. Back in the classroom, we became hedgehog experts, discovering lots of fascinating facts about these rather cute but very spiky little creatures. We even learnt some new words to help us understand how hedgehogs live and prepare for the colder months. Our creative skills were put to the test, as we carefully practised using scissors to snip leaves and transform them into spines for our very own hedgehogs. It was lovely to see those little fingers working so hard and our children growing in confidence with their cutting skills.

Our hedgehog learning has felt particularly special this week, as Mrs Grayson recently found a little hoglet in her garden and had to take it to Freshfield Animal Rescue Centre's hedgehog hospital for help. We have been receiving updates on the little visitor, which we named Rosie and it has given us a lovely opportunity to think about how we can care for the animals who share our world. We are all sending Rosie our very best wishes and hope she continues to do well!

Our imaginations have taken us on another magical adventure as we discovered ‘Room on the Broom’ by Julia Donaldson. The home corner and small world area have been transformed by the witch and her wonderful story, and the children have thoroughly enjoyed bringing it to life. We have had great fun joining in with the familiar, repetitive phrases, anticipating what might happen next and retelling parts of the story through our play. Inspired by the witch, our water area has become a potion-making station, where all sorts of mysterious mixtures have been concocted! There has been plenty of stirring, pouring, experimenting and imaginative chatter as our little witches and wizards have got to work.

In Maths, we have been developing our ability to recognise small quantities without needing to count each object individually. This is called ‘subitising’ and we have been focusing on numbers one, two and three. We are becoming wonderfully speedy at spotting these little amounts, showing just how much our mathematical confidence is growing!

We also had the delicious opportunity to taste some of our pumpkins after roasting them with herbs and spices. What a treat! The children were able to explore the changes that happened during cooking, enjoy the lovely smells and have a taste of the finished pumpkin. Experiences like these offer such a lovely way to bring our learning about autumn produce to life, encouraging us to explore new flavours and talk about what we notice. We certainly had some very enthusiastic little tasters!

This week, we were delighted to welcome the rest of our grown-ups into Nursery for our Stay and Play sessions. It has been such a joy to share our setting with you, watching you play, explore, chat and enjoy special moments alongside your children. Thank you to everyone who has joined us throughout these sessions. Your time, involvement and willingness to be part of our Nursery community mean so much and it has been lovely to strengthen the partnership between home and school. These shared experiences really do help our little ones feel that Nursery is a place where their important grown-ups and their learning come together.

And then came the comfiest day of the week! We ended our half term by acknowledging Alder Hey Pyjama Day, swapping our usual Nursery clothes for cosy pyjamas and welcoming our much-loved teddies along for the adventure. With stories to share, a 'midnight feast' to enjoy and plenty of bouncing on the bed, Nursery became a rather lively place to spend a day in bed! There were snuggles, giggles and lots of imaginative fun, all while helping us recognise the wonderful work of Alder Hey Children's Hospital and the children and families it supports.

It is quite incredible to think that our first half term has already come to an end. As a team, we have felt so proud watching our little people grow in confidence, become more independent and settle into the rhythms and routines of Nursery life. Those first steps through the Nursery door can feel like such a big adventure and it has been an absolute delight and privilege to see how much the children have grown, how confidently they now move around their environment and how happily they are beginning to learn, play and build relationships together. Nursery life really is the best life!

As we close this first chapter, we would like to say a heartfelt thank you to our whole Nursery family - our little people and their big people alike. Thank you for your trust, kindness, encouragement and continued support. Working together makes such a difference, and we feel very lucky to be sharing this special journey with you.

Now it is time for a little rest, some family adventures and perhaps a few cosy cuddles of our own! We hope you all enjoy a very special half-term break, making happy memories together. We cannot wait to welcome everyone back for another half term of discovery, learning and plenty more opportunities to let our little lights 'Shine Bright'.

Warm wishes,

Mrs Grayson and the Nursery team.
