Four sleeps on, took us to meeting back up on Tuesday - with the Bank Holiday giving us a little extra time to rest and recharge!

In Maths, we have been exploring the main 2D shapes. The children have been encouraged to talk about and investigate shapes using informal language, while also beginning to use mathematical vocabulary such as sides, corners, straight, flat and round. We enjoyed identifying shapes in our environment and discussing their properties, with lots of hands-on exploration and great mathematical thinking.

In Phonics, we were introduced to the sound ‘d’, and it has been fantastic to see how much the children’s confidence is growing. They are becoming much more secure in recognising sounds - and are very quick to let me know if I get it wrong!

In Early Listening, our younger members enjoyed some fun ‘pirate’ themed activities. One being, ‘Parrot talk’ where we squawked like parrot, whispered like sneaky pirates and used loud Captain voices, exploring voice sounds of loud/quiet, high/low and fast/slow. Another favourite was ‘What’s in the treasure bag’ we had to feel and guess the item -  encouraging descriptive words.

We have continued to care for our growing plants, showing great responsibility and interest. This week also brought some very exciting new arrivals into our classroom - two tiny tadpoles, which the children have named Ted and Fred - our “twins”! We are observing them closely and learning how to care for them, looking forward to seeing the changes that will happen over time.

Excitement is certainly building for our upcoming Pirate Day, with lots of discussion about possible costumes and accessories. The children are full of wonderful ideas and we cannot wait to see their creativity come to life!

This week, we have also been focusing on parrots. The children have enjoyed learning more about these fascinating birds and had great fun creating their own paper plate parrots. There was lots of laughter as we tried to talk like parrots, practising our best squawks and repeating words!

We also had the opportunity to design and create our own flags, carefully thinking about the images and symbols we wanted to include. The children showed great imagination and pride in their creations.

To mark a very special occasion, today (Friday 8th) we joined in a nationwide celebration as Sir David Attenborough turns 100! The children were really interested to learn about his work and how he has helped people understand and appreciate the natural world around us. This led to us making links in our learning to things we have dome to look after and care for our environment. Outside we became ‘mini-Attenboroughs’ and looked for insects and other creepy crawlies in our environment before creating a special ‘nature’ birthday cake for Sir David, which we felt definitely had 100 candles!

It has been another wonderful week of learning, curiosity and creativity in Nursery.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and we look forward to another exciting week ahead!

Warm wishes,

Mrs Grayson and the Nursery team
