What a wonderfully busy and joy-filled week it has been in Nursery as we marked World Bee Day and approached the end of another fabulous half term together!

This week, we truly have been ‘busy bees’ as we focused on learning more about these clever and marvellous little insects. In PE, we enjoyed a very active and exciting session, buzzing around the space with our tiny wings taking us across fields and meadows in search of beautifully scented flowers. The hoops became our flowers and as the challenge increased, when the music stopped we had to quickly find a flower to land on before the ‘beekeepers’ caught us! There was much laughter and excitement as we moved carefully around the space.

We also explored how bees transfer pollen from one flower to another. The children loved becoming bees themselves, collecting ‘pollen’ from one flower and carefully transporting it to another. We really were wonderfully busy, buzzy bees!

Back in the classroom, we continued learning more about these fascinating insects and delved a little deeper into what makes an insect an insect. The children discovered that insects have three body parts and six legs, which linked beautifully to this week’s phonics sound, ‘i’. We are becoming increasingly confident with our phonics learning and now know the sounds ‘m’, ‘a’, ‘s’, ‘d’, ‘t’ and ‘i’. The children have loved exploring the words we can make and write using these sounds and continue to amaze us with their enthusiasm and growing confidence.

Our classroom has also been full of exciting bee-themed activities for the children to explore, sparking lots of curiosity, conversation and imaginative play. We particularly enjoyed sharing the beautiful story ‘Bee & Me’ by Alison Jay, which encouraged lovely discussions about friendship, kindness and caring for the world around us.

In Early Listening, we used our percussion instruments to explore volume, speed and identifying sounds through listening games. The children particularly enjoyed joining in with stories and books rich in rhythm and rhyme, which created lots of opportunities for listening, prediction and participation.

In Maths, we revisited the concepts of ‘more’ and ‘fewer’, alongside positional language. Through practical, hands-on activities, the children are becoming increasingly confident in explaining their thinking and deciding whether they agree or disagree with answers given.

On Wednesday, we attended WOW Service in Church, where the focus was on ‘special places’. We learned that the Temple was a special place for Jesus and spent time sharing the places that are special to us too, both in class and during the service. As always, the children sang beautifully and filled the Church with love, joy and such positive energy.

The week also began with an exciting countdown to our long-awaited Pirate Day on Thursday - and it certainly did not disappoint! It was wonderful opening the Nursery door to swashbuckling pirates eager for adventure, elegant mermaids with shimmering tails sparkling like galaxies and a fine looking little parrot! The day was filled with excitement, imagination and laughter as the children took part in activities that tested their courage, teamwork and willingness to help one another. It was truly a magical day full of adventure and smiles.

We ended our week by looking back at our ‘Year in Nursery’ tree, reflecting together on all the wonderful learning, experiences and memories we have shared so far. While doing this, we enjoyed some very tasty honey on toast - a perfect ending to our bee-themed week!

What a fantastic half term it has been. The children continue to fill our days with wonder, kindness and joy, and it is such a privilege to watch them grow and flourish together.

Wishing you all a very well-earned break filled with rest, fun and special moments together. We look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday 1st June, for another exciting half term ahead!

Warm wishes,

Mrs Grayson and the Nursery team
