Reception Autumn 1 - Week 2

What a wonderful week we have had in Reception as we began our exciting "All About Me" theme! The children have been busy exploring what makes each of us special, unique and important.
We started our week by thinking about ourselves and the people who are special to us. During our RE learning, we talked about how every single person is unique and wonderfully made. The children loved exploring the story “I am Special” and discussing how we are all similar in some ways and different in others. One of the highlights of the week was making our very own mirrors. We had lovely conversations about eye colour, hair colour and the special things that make each child who they are.
Our class stories helped us think about ourselves too. We enjoyed sharing Only One You, Happy to be Me, The Colour Monster Starts School and Our Class is a Family. These stories sparked wonderful discussions about friendship, belonging, feelings and celebrating our differences.
In our theme sessions, we talked about our talents and the things we are good at. The children were eager to share their interests and achievements, and we loved hearing about the many wonderful things they enjoy doing. Later in the week, we explored different emotions through The Colour Monster. The children enjoyed making facial expressions to show different feelings and playing a fun game where they had to guess emotions from their friends' expressions.
Our phonics journey has begun too! This week we learned the sounds m, a, s, d and t. The children practised recognising the sounds, saying them clearly and beginning to form the letters correctly. We were especially impressed with how enthusiastically they joined in with our Fred Talk games throughout the day.
In maths, we have been exploring numbers 1, 2 and 3. The children have been practising their subitising skills, spotting small quantities without counting, and representing numbers on their fingers in different ways. They have enjoyed working with Numberblocks and demonstrating their growing confidence with numbers.
Creative learning continued throughout the week. The children created beautiful family portraits using mirrors to help them observe their features carefully. We also explored making marks with wax crayons and discovered different textures through wax rubbings, creating some wonderful patterns and designs.
We are incredibly proud of how well the children have settled into Reception routines and how confidently they are beginning to share their ideas, make new friends and explore their environment. It has been a fantastic week of discovering just how special and unique each member of our Reception family is.
