Reception - Autumn 1 - Week 6
Date: 5th Oct 2026 @ 3:42pm

This week in Reception, we have been exploring the wonderful season of Autumn! The children have enjoyed learning about the changes they can see around them, looking closely at autumn treasures and discussing how leaves, trees and the weather change during this special time of year. We shared stories including The Leaf Thief, Percy the Park Keeper: After the Storm and Goose's Autumn to help us learn more about the season.
In our phonics lessons, we have been learning the sounds r, j, v and y. The children have been practising recognising and forming these letters, as well as developing their blending skills and using their "Fred Fingers" to help them hear sounds in words. We are so proud of the confidence the children are showing as they begin their reading journey.
In maths, we have focused on patterns. The children have explored patterns they can see and hear, copied simple patterns, and begun creating their own. We have used actions, natural objects and musical instruments to make learning fun and engaging. It has been wonderful to see the children spotting patterns all around them!
Our continuous provision has been full of autumn-themed learning opportunities. The children have enjoyed exploring our harvest-themed tuff tray with farm animals and vegetables, acting out harvesting crops and talking about different vegetables. We have also decorated leaf templates using autumn colours, made leaves from playdough and investigated autumn objects using magnifying glasses.
In art, we began exploring observational drawing, carefully looking at seasonal flowers and vegetables before creating our own drawings. The children showed great concentration as they used pencils to represent what they could see.
We are incredibly proud of how enthusiastically the children are settling into Reception life. Thank you for your continued support at home. We hope you enjoy looking for signs of autumn together during your family walks this weekend!
