Reception - Summer 1 - Week 3
Date: 28th Apr 2026 @ 4:03pm
This week, the children have enjoyed continuing to explore “Jesus’ friends” – the Disciples. They reflected on what makes a good friend and connected this to their own friendships. We loved sharing the story of The Rainbow Fish, using it to talk about kindness, sharing and caring for others, just as Jesus teaches us to do.
In Phonics, the children have been working very hard learning lots of new sounds and practising blending and segmenting. We are also developing our writing skills, encouraging the children to have a go at forming letters and using their growing phonics knowledge to write words and simple sentences.
In Maths, the children have been building on their understanding of subtraction by taking away. They explored reducing amounts within 10 by physically taking objects away, linking this to real-life situations. To deepen their thinking, the children were introduced to simple number stories such as “First, then, now” problems. For example: “There were 5 children on the bus. We don’t know how many got off, but now there are 2 children.” This helped them reason about what has changed and how many were taken away.
The children have also continued exploring shape. Having already used 3D shapes for different purposes, they extended this learning to 2D shapes, exploring how shapes look when they are turned or rotated. This is an important skill that helps children develop their ability to visualise how shapes fit together as their learning progresses.
In Understanding the World, we began learning about the life cycle of a frog. The children created a circle map to share what they already knew about frogs and the different stages of their life cycle. We will revisit this learning at the end of next week to see how much we have learned. The children also loved creating their own pop-up frog life cycle, which was lots of fun!
We hope you all enjoy the Bank Holiday weekend, and that the sunshine continues to shine!
