Reception - Summer 1 - Week 6
Date: 19th May 2026 @ 2:15pm
Wow – can you believe it’s already half term!
What a wonderful few weeks we have had exploring our theme of growth and change. The children have enjoyed every minute and have learnt so much along the way.
This week, we really enjoyed our visit to church for our ‘WOW’ service. A big thank you to Anne and Lilly for talking to us about special places and why the church is a special place for many people. Back in the classroom, the children loved sharing pictures of their own special places and talking about why they are meaningful to them.
In phonics, we have continued to recap and practise all of our learning, including speedy sounds, focus sounds, and developing our confidence with segmenting and blending.
In maths, the children have been exploring sharing and are now beginning to move on to grouping. They have been using their understanding of equal and unequal groups to help them. We have learnt that sharing involves dividing objects equally between groups, whereas grouping involves placing a certain number of items into each group and working out how many groups can be made. The children have also been consolidating their knowledge of doubles by building and exploring doubles in a range of different ways. We have been encouraging them to use mathematical language and sentence stems to explain their thinking and reasoning.
It has also been RSE week, where we have spent time thinking carefully about our feelings. The children have been talking about the different emotions we all experience and why it is important to share our feelings. We also discussed how our friends can help support us. As part of this learning, we explored families and celebrated family diversity, recognising that every family is special and made up of different people.
To finish the week, we celebrated all of our learning about butterflies, frogs and ladybirds by creating a circle map to help us remember everything we have learnt – the children were so proud of how much they could recall!
Please see our updated virtual classroom attached to this blog if you would like to explore any of the themes we will be exploring after the half term.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support. We hope you all have a lovely and restful half term break.
