Reception - Summer 2 - Week 1
Date: 2nd Jun 2026 @ 6:29pm
Welcome back, Reception!
We hope you all had a wonderful, sun-filled half term and were able to enjoy the beautiful weather together. Thank you so much to those of you who have shared your children’s adventures on Tapestry – it is always so lovely for us to see what they have been getting up to outside of school! We can hardly believe that we are now in our final half term of Reception. The year has flown by, and we are so excited to make lots of special memories together as we head towards the end of this fantastic year.
This week, we really enjoyed our WOW service which was linked to Prayer. The children listened beautifully and engaged thoughtfully with the theme. We will continue to explore prayer over the next few weeks in school. A big thank you to Lilly – we are already looking forward to our final WOW service, which will be a very special one for our Reception children as they prepare to move up to Year 1.
In phonics and writing, the children have been amazing us with their progress. They are really beginning to use their phonics knowledge independently and are confidently applying their skills in their writing. We have been particularly impressed with how they are using their ‘red words’ (tricky words that cannot always be sounded out) in their work – well done everyone!
In Maths, we have begun a new block of learning focusing on repeating patterns. The children are revisiting familiar patterns and deepening their understanding by identifying the rule within a pattern. They are learning to talk about their thinking and explain what comes next and why. As they grow in confidence, they are beginning to create their own repeating pattern rules too! Exploring patterns is an important early mathematical skill, helping children to recognise relationships and make generalisations. We have also been busy developing our thinking through play in our small world and construction areas. The children have been creating and replicating scenes, thinking carefully about where objects are in relation to each other – an important first step towards early mapping skills. It has been wonderful to see how their fine motor skills and knowledge of 2-D and 3-D shapes are supporting them to build and talk about their ideas in increasingly detailed ways.
Alongside this, we have launched an exciting mini-theme all about the World Cup! The children have loved exploring what the World Cup is and learning that it is a global football competition where teams from different countries come together to compete. Each child has been allocated a team to follow throughout the competition – as you can imagine, this has gone down with huge excitement! We are looking forward to seeing them develop their teamwork and sporting enthusiasm, as well as learning more about the different countries taking part.
It has been a fantastic start to our final half term, and we are so proud of how hard the children are working and how much they are growing in confidence every day.
Have a lovely weekend, and we look forward to another wonderful week ahead!
