Year 1 - Autumn 1 - Week 5

Date: 29th Sep 2026 @ 4:29pm

What another fantastic week we have had in Year 1! We are so proud of the hard work, resilience and enthusiasm the children have shown throughout the week.

In Maths, we have been focusing on ordering and comparing numbers. We explored the concepts of greater than, less than and equal to, using practical resources as well as written activities. We worked hard to deepen our understanding by using ten frames and number lines to help us compare numbers and explain our reasoning. Next week, we will continue to build on our place value knowledge.

At the end of the week, we returned to our class text, The Girl at the Front of the Class. We focused on writing sentences about the main character and considering how she might be feeling at different points in the story. The children worked hard to develop their sentence-writing skills, remembering to include capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.

In Geography, we focused on Scotland. We enjoyed learning about some of Scotland's traditions and symbols, including the national animal and flower. Who knew the national animal was a unicorn? We also sampled some traditional Scottish foods, including haggis and shortbread. The children had great fun learning some Scottish dancing and creating their own Scottish-themed books. Next week, we will continue our journey around the United Kingdom.

In Music, we enjoyed learning about our senses while continuing to practise keeping a steady rhythm. We explored how our senses help us to experience the world around us and used instruments and body percussion to create and repeat simple rhythmic patterns. The children showed great enthusiasm and worked hard to keep in time with the beat.

In Science, we explored the season of spring and compared it with the other seasons we have already learned about. We discovered that spring is often associated with growth and new life. We discussed how trees and plants begin to grow again and how many animals have their young during this time of year. The children enjoyed spotting the changes that happen in nature as spring arrives.

In PE, we continued developing our ball skills and took part in our Fundamentals lessons. We have really been enjoying these sessions and the range of games we play. It has been wonderful to see the children growing in confidence as they develop their hopping, jumping and coordination skills.

The Year 1 Virtual Classroom has been updated and attached to this week's blog. It includes links to a variety of websites and resources to support additional learning at home.
