Year 1 - Summer 1 - Week 1
Date: 16th Apr 2026 @ 5:50pm

What a wonderful week it’s been in Year 1 – full of thoughtful learning, new topics, and lots of smiles!
In Maths, we continued to develop our understanding of place value within 50. The children worked really hard using tens and ones frames, as well as Base 10 resources, to physically build and represent numbers. We have been practising how to use a place value chart with growing confidence, and it has been fantastic to see how secure the children are becoming when working with tens and ones.
In English, we began an exciting new story called Toys in Space. We made links to the much-loved film Toy Story, comparing characters and thinking about similarities and differences. This week, we explored the first few pages, making predictions about what might happen next and discussing how the characters might be feeling. There were some brilliant ideas and lots of imaginative thinking!
In RE, we started our lovely new topic all about Baptism. It was wonderful to share our own memories of baptisms and to talk about what a baptism is and why it is special to Christians. The children listened carefully to one another and shared their experiences so thoughtfully. Next week, we are looking forward to exploring these memories further by looking at photographs from these special occasions.
In Geography, we explored the continents and oceans of the world. Using music, pictures, and maps, the children began to learn their names and locations. It was a fun and engaging way to start building our understanding of the wider world.
In PE, we enjoyed a calm and relaxing yoga session, trying out different poses and focusing on our balance and breathing. We also began our new topic of net and wall games, where we practised rolling small balls with control and accuracy.
Well done, Year 1, for all your hard work and enthusiasm this week. Have a lovely, restful weekend!
