What another wonderful week we have had in Year 1! We are so proud of the hard work, resilience and enthusiasm the children have shown across all areas of their learning.

In Maths, we have continued to focus on place value. We have explored how numbers fit on a number line, practising counting forwards and backwards confidently and identifying missing numbers. We have also been learning about one more and one less than a given number. Next week, we will continue to develop our understanding of one less before moving on to matching groups.

In English, we have spent the week focusing on our dictated sentences. The children have worked hard to listen carefully, hold a sentence in their heads and write it independently. We have also been checking that our sentences include all the important features, such as capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. Next week, we will return to our class text, The Girl at the Front of the Class.

In Geography, we focused on the United Kingdom and zoomed in on England. We explored some of England's traditions and symbols, including Morris dancing, the flag, the national animal and the national flower. We even got to try some traditional food, enjoying scones with jam! Next week, we will be learning all about Scotland.

In Art, we focused on line-making and experimented with creating a variety of lines, including dotted and dashed lines. We also explored how applying different amounts of pressure can affect our marks and investigated a range of materials to create different effects.

In RE, we learned about Harvest and what it means. We sorted a variety of foods and discovered that our food comes from all around the world, not just from local shops. We also learned why Harvest is important to Christians, as it is a time to give thanks to God for the food we have. Next week, we will explore Harvest in the past and compare it to Harvest celebrations today.

In Science, we focused on winter, comparing this season to autumn and identifying the similarities and differences between them. The children enjoyed discussing the changes that happen in the environment throughout the year. Next week, we will begin learning about spring and the signs of seasonal change.
