Year 2 - Autumn 1 - Week 3

This week in Year 1, we have continued to work incredibly hard and have enjoyed lots of exciting learning across the curriculum!
In Maths, we began learning all about time. We were very excited to start telling the time, and some of us were eager to show off the knowledge we already had. We explored how clocks work and practised reading different times throughout the week. We also learned about fractions, focusing on halves and quarters. We discussed what it means to share fairly, make equal groups and divide objects into equal parts. We enjoyed using practical resources to help us understand these important mathematical concepts.
One of the highlights of our week was taking part in a skipping workshop with Dan the Skipping Man! We loved challenging ourselves to learn this new skill. Some of us were excited to show off our fantastic skipping abilities, while others learnt how to skip for the very first time. We all tried incredibly hard and were very proud of ourselves for getting involved. The whole-class long rope games were definitely our favourite part and brought lots of laughter and smiles. Well done, everyone, for showing such determination and enthusiasm!
In English, we continued our work based on Maya the Octopus and Leo and the Jellyfish. We developed our descriptive writing skills by using our ideas from our Roll on the Wall activity to write our own character descriptions of Maya. We thought carefully about her appearance, personality and feelings to create detailed descriptions. We also explored more of our example text, Leo and the Jellyfish, and unpicked the writer's choices, identifying the skills and techniques used to make the writing engaging and descriptive.
In RE, we explored more Bible stories through drama and role play. Working together, we recreated some of our favourite stories and discussed whether they belonged in the Old Testament or the New Testament. We enjoyed bringing the stories to life and deepening our understanding of their meaning and place within the Bible.
In Science, we began our exciting new topic, Animals Including Humans. We worked in groups to create Circle Maps and share everything we already know about animals. We discussed animal features, what animals need to stay alive, where they live and how they are different from one another. We are looking forward to building on this knowledge over the coming weeks.
