Year 2 - Autumn 1 - Week 5
Date: 30th Sep 2026 @ 1:40pm

This week in Year 2, we have continued to work incredibly hard and have enjoyed another fantastic week of learning. We have shown great determination, enthusiasm and confidence as we have challenged ourselves across the curriculum.
In Maths, we focused on understanding 10s and 1s on number lines to 100. We explored how important it is to look carefully at the intervals on a number line before making assumptions about the missing numbers. We discussed key mathematical vocabulary such as intervals, start point and end point, and used this knowledge to help us solve a variety of missing number line problems. As the week progressed, we became much more confident at identifying what each interval was worth and explaining our reasoning. We also developed our estimating skills by placing numbers onto number lines and using our understanding of numbers to 100 to help us make sensible decisions about where they belonged. We learned that estimation is not about guessing, but about using what we already know to make informed choices. It was fantastic to see how our confidence and accuracy improved throughout the week.
In English, we focused on writing our own setting descriptions based on our vehicle text, Leo and the Octopus. We carefully explored how authors create vivid images for the reader and thought about what makes a setting interesting and engaging. Using expanded noun phrases, ambitious adjectives and powerful verbs, we worked hard to bring our settings to life. We considered what a reader might see, hear and feel when visiting our setting and included lots of descriptive detail in our writing. We were so impressed with the creativity and imagination shown in everyone's completed pieces.
In Geography, we learned all about the Equator and the different hemispheres of the Earth. We discovered that the Equator is an imaginary line that circles the middle of the Earth, dividing it into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. We discussed how countries close to the Equator often experience warmer climates because they receive more direct sunlight throughout the year. This learning supported our understanding of the world's continents, oceans and geographical locations, helping us to develop important geographical knowledge about our planet. As part of our learning, we created our own globes using soft balls and tape to mark the Equator. This hands-on activity helped us visualise how the Earth is divided and strengthened our understanding of where different places are located around the world. We showed an excellent understanding of these concepts and impressed our teachers with our geographical vocabulary and thoughtful questions.
In Science, we continued learning about healthy eating and balanced diets. We recapped our knowledge of the different food groups and discussed why it is important to eat a variety of foods rather than too much of one particular type. We explored how different foods help our bodies in different ways, providing us with energy, helping us grow and keeping us healthy. To apply our learning, we became café and restaurant owners and designed our very own menus. We had so much fun being creative and including some of our favourite foods, while also thinking carefully about their nutritional value. We worked hard to create balanced meal options and considered how different foods could contribute to a healthy lifestyle. It was wonderful to see so many creative ideas alongside some excellent scientific thinking.
We have had another brilliant week of learning and should all be very proud of our hard work and positive attitudes.
