Year 2 - Autumn 1 - Week 6

IMG_3177.jpegThis week in Year 2, we have had another busy and exciting week of learning. We have shown fantastic determination, curiosity and resilience across the curriculum, and it has been lovely to see everyone growing in confidence and taking pride in their achievements.

In Maths, we have continued developing our times table knowledge by learning another of our times table songs, focusing on the 10 times table this week. We have been working hard to recall our facts quickly and accurately, while also keeping in time with the music! We also completed our learning on place value by comparing numbers and objects using the less than, greater than and equal to symbols. Alongside this, we practised counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We challenged ourselves to use our knowledge beyond simply recalling times tables, spotting patterns and applying what we know to different problem-solving questions. It has been fantastic to see our confidence with number growing!

In English, we began planning our own narratives based on our vehicle text, Leo and the Octopus. We used a planning template to help us organise our stories into five clear sections and thought carefully about what would happen at each stage. We learned that a plan does not need to contain full sentences. Instead, we can use short notes, prompts and pictures to remind ourselves of our ideas when we begin writing. We carefully considered the important events and characters' feelings throughout the story, making notes that will support us when we become authors and write our own narratives.

In Geography, we explored the difference between human and physical geographical features. We looked carefully at aerial photographs of our local area as well as places from around the world and discussed the different features we could identify. We learned that physical features occur naturally, whereas human features have been created or changed by people. Working with our partners, we became geography detectives and used our new knowledge to identify and discuss different features within aerial photographs. We showed some brilliant observational skills and used our geographical vocabulary confidently.

In PE, we enjoyed taking part in a variety of ball games, but our most important learning this week went beyond our physical skills. We focused on developing resilience and understanding that losing is a normal part of playing games and taking part in sport. We discussed how we can respond positively when things do not go our way and how important it is to pick ourselves back up, keep trying and get straight back into the game. We were so proud to see everyone encouraging one another and showing such positive attitudes.

In RE, we discovered the inspiring story of Mary Jones and her determination to own a Bible in her own language. We were amazed to learn how committed she was to achieving her goal, saving for six years before making a long journey to purchase a Bible. We thought carefully about the determination and perseverance she showed and made some wonderful links to our school value of Hope. We discussed how Mary continued to believe in her goal even when it was difficult and considered how we can show the same hope and determination when we face challenges in our own lives.

In Outdoor Learning, we had lots of fun designing and creating our very own hedgehog houses using junk-modelling materials! We considered important features such as a stable, flat base, enough space for a hedgehog to fit comfortably inside and a suitable entrance. We then put our design ideas into practice and loved seeing our hedgehog homes come to life. It was a fantastic opportunity to combine our creativity, teamwork and understanding of what animals need to survive.

PE will be Tuesday and Wednesday next week only.
