Year 2 - Summer 1 - Week 4

Date: 8th May 2026 @ 3:42pm

We have had another fantastic and busy week in Year 2, with lots of exciting learning taking place across the curriculum!

In Maths, the children have worked extremely hard to complete our topic on addition and subtraction. This week, we focused on adding and subtracting two-digit numbers, including calculations that cross 10. We used concrete resources, pictorial methods and number lines to help deepen our understanding, and the children became much more confident explaining their methods. It was wonderful to see them challenging themselves and showing resilience when things felt tricky. Next week, we will be moving on to multiplication and division, where we will begin by looking at grouping and sharing.

In English, the children completed their rewrite of our river story. They worked hard to include expanded noun phrases with adjectives, as well as similes and adverbs to make their writing more descriptive and engaging for the reader. We also focused on using conjunctions to extend sentences and checking our work carefully for capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. The pride the children showed in their finished pieces has been fantastic!

In Art, we began designing our clay house tiles. The children spent time carefully sketching their ideas, thinking about shape, pattern and texture. They showed great creativity and independence when planning their designs, and we are looking forward to seeing these ideas come to life over the next few lessons.

In PE, we have been developing our teamwork and coordination skills through rounders. The children practised their throwing, catching and striking, as well as learning how to work together as a team. It has been lovely to see their confidence grow and their enthusiasm for physical activity.

In Science, we linked our learning to the incredible David Attenborough as he celebrates his 100th birthday. We discussed his importance in helping us understand and protect our planet, before heading outside for a nature hunt. The children explored our school grounds, identifying plants and spotting signs of wildlife, and thinking about how we can care for our environment.

In RE, we learned about mosques and compared them to churches. The children explored key features of both places of worship and thought carefully about similarities and differences, such as how they are used and why they are important to believers. They shared some thoughtful and respectful ideas during our discussions.

In Guided Reading, we have continued to focus on retrieval skills. The children have been practising how to find key information in a text and record their answers clearly, using evidence to support their thinking.
