Year 2 - Summer 1 - Week 5

Date: 17th May 2026 @ 7:53pm

We have had another fantastic and busy week in Year 2, with lots of exciting learning taking place across the curriculum!

In Maths, the children have begun their new topic on multiplication. We focused on understanding multiplication as repeated addition, using practical resources and number sentences to support our learning. The children explored how equal groups can be represented in different ways and showed great enthusiasm when solving problems. Next week, we will continue to develop this understanding as we move further into multiplication and division.

In English, we completed a series of SPaG lessons, where the children practised key skills such as punctuation, sentence structure and grammar. They then used these skills in an independent creative writing piece, where it was fantastic to see their ideas come to life. The children showed increasing confidence in applying what they have learned independently. Next week, we will revisit SPaG before completing another independent write.

In Art, the children designed their own clay tiles based on a house theme. They carefully planned their ideas, thinking about shape, detail and pattern, showing great creativity and thoughtfulness. Next week, they will begin making their final clay tiles, and we are very excited to see their designs come to life.

In PE, we focused on team games and played both rounders and dodgeball. The children worked on their throwing, catching and teamwork skills, demonstrating great sportsmanship and enthusiasm. Next week, we will begin our gymnastics unit, where the children will develop their balance, control and coordination.

In Geography, we explored the human and physical features of coasts. The children learned to identify and describe different features and began to understand how coastlines are formed. Next week, we will be developing our map skills further by learning how to use a compass.

In Science, we learned about food chains. The children explored how animals and plants depend on each other and worked hard to create their own food chains, including more complex four-step chains. They showed a good understanding of producers, consumers and predators.

In PSHE, we focused on Mental Health Awareness Week. We discussed different emotions, what they mean and how they can affect our behaviour. The children shared thoughtful ideas about how we can manage strong feelings and the importance of talking to someone we trust. We also reminded ourselves of strategies we can use to help regulate our emotions. Next week, we will be focusing on RSE as part of our learning.

In RE, we compared a church and a synagogue, thinking about how both places of worship are similar and different. The children showed respect and curiosity as they explored these important religious spaces and their significance to different communities.

In Guided Reading, we have continued to develop our retrieval skills, with the children becoming more confident at finding key information in a text and explaining their answers clearly.
