Year 3 - Autumn 1 - Week 1

Welcome Back!

What a fantastic first week we have had! It has been wonderful to welcome everyone back to school, settle into our new routines and begin getting to know each other. The children have made a fantastic start to Year 3, and our classroom has been full of smiles, enthusiasm and excitement.

This week, we begun our learning journey with the brilliant book Chaos in the Chocolate Factory, following the adventures of Charlie Bucket as he begins his new life inside the chocolate factory.

In English, we made predictions about what might happen in the story before inventing our very own chocolate treats. The children then created a set of instructions explaining how their delicious inventions could be made in the chocolate factory. They had a fantastic time experimenting with different flavour combinations and adding their own ‘special ingredients’ to make their creations extra special.

In Maths, we explored charts and collected data by surveying the class to discover our favourite sweet treats. We also put our mathematical skills to the test by helping Charlie solve a range of chocolate-themed problems.

In Design and Technology, we took part in an exciting structure challenge. Working in table groups, we explored how to build a strong and stable structure. The Masterminds and Clever Cookies tables impressed us with their fantastic constructions, producing the tallest and exciting structures! Most importantly, the children demonstrated brilliant communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills throughout the challenge.

We then put our creative hats on to design our own packaging for our sweet treat inventions before designing and building our very own chocolate-making machines using junk modelling materials. There were some wonderfully imaginative ideas!

It has been a busy and exciting week, and the children have made a brilliant start to life in Year 3. I have been so impressed by their enthusiasm, creativity, teamwork and willingness to have a go.
