Year 4 - Autumn 1- Week 2

What a fantastic first full week we have had in Year 4! The children have settled brilliantly into their new routines and have shown enthusiasm, maturity and a real eagerness to learn. We have been so impressed with their positive attitudes and willingness to take on new challenges.

This week also saw the arrival of our Reading Festival, a celebration of all things books. We have loved sharing our favourite stories with one another, exploring exciting new titles at the Usborne Book Fair and spending time reading in our beautiful reading tent. It has been wonderful to see such enthusiasm for reading across the class.

In Guided Reading, we have enjoyed exploring Beowulf, using a range of strategies to help us understand unfamiliar vocabulary and deepen our understanding of the text through discussion.

Our English lessons have focused on the magical story Leon and the Place Between. The children thoroughly enjoyed listening to the opening of the story and used adventurous vocabulary to create detailed character descriptions of the mysterious magician, Abdul Kazam.

In Maths, we began our work on place value. Using manipulatives, the children built and partitioned three-digit numbers before learning how to plot and estimate numbers on a number line. They have been keen to investigate different methods and challenge themselves in their learning.

Our Science lessons focused on how animals have adapted to survive in their habitats. The children enjoyed learning about the different features that help animals meet their needs in a variety of environments.

Outdoor Learning provided another highlight of the week. We rolled up our sleeves and gave the outdoor classroom a thorough tidy-up, removing weeds and turning over the soil ready for future planting. We were delighted to discover and harvest some delicious cherry tomatoes, carrots and an enormous courgette!

Wednesday brought our first swimming lesson of the year. We were incredibly impressed with the enthusiasm, determination and excellent behaviour shown by everyone. We are looking forward to seeing how much progress the children make over the coming weeks.

Well done, Year 4, on such a successful start to the new school year. We can't wait to see what the rest of the term brings!
