Year 5 - Autumn 1 - Week 1
Date: 3rd Sep 2026 @ 5:41pm

What a wonderful start to the new school year we have had in Year 5! This week, we based our learning around 'The Greatest Showman', exploring its important messages about being yourself, believing in your abilities, and always striving to be the best version of yourself. We linked these ideas closely to our 'SHINE' values and discussed how these values can help us throughout the year.
One of the highlights of the week was our exciting escape room challenge. The children discovered that a mysterious case had been left behind by a character from 'The Greatest Showman' and had to work together to unlock it. They used a range of skills, including solving riddles, completing maths challenges, and unscrambling words. It was fantastic to see everyone demonstrating teamwork and determination.
In Design and Technology, the children researched, designed, created, and evaluated their own zip line pods. Their challenge was to transport a circus character safely from one side of the arena to the other. There was lots of problem solving involved, and we talked about how things are not always easy the first time. The children showed great perseverance, learning from their mistakes and improving their designs along the way.
In English, the children stepped into the shoes of a circus character and wrote thoughtful letters to a family member or friend. They considered how their character might have been feeling and used their imagination to express emotions and experiences effectively.
During outdoor learning, we had lots of fun getting creative with long balloons, learning how to twist them into different animals and objects. There were plenty of smiles and some very impressive creations!
As part of our maths and enterprise learning, the children were given a set budget to create their own circus. They had to make careful decisions about how to spend their money, choosing between different acts, performers, and stalls. This helped them develop their budgeting and decision-making skills while having lots of fun designing their dream circus.
In PE, we enjoyed playing bench ball. The children demonstrated excellent teamwork and lots of fun!
It has been a fantastic first week back. We are so proud of how the children have embraced challenges, supported one another, and demonstrated our SHINE values. We can't wait to see what the rest of the year brings!
