Year 5 - Autumn 1 - Week 2

In Writing, we have been enjoying the fascinating book 'The Midnight Fair'. As this is a wordless book, we have had great fun using our imaginations to predict what might happen next and to infer what could already be happening within the story. The children have shown fantastic creativity when discussing the different scenes and characters. We have been developing our writing skills by exploring relative clauses, expanded noun phrases, prefixes and dashes for parenthesis. The children also created some wonderful metaphors to describe different aspects of the fair, helping to make their writing more vivid and engaging. We looked closely at an extract containing words that linked to the story and discussed why the author may have chosen them. The children also produced some fantastic setting descriptions, bringing the magical fair to life through their writing.
In Reading, we focused on the fiction book 'Between Worlds'. We discussed what makes a traditional folktale and identified the key features that these stories often contain. The children impressed us with their knowledge of other folktales they had heard before and were able to make links between different stories. We also explored the meaning of new vocabulary and discussed how an author's choice of words can help us understand a character's personality. By examining characters' actions and behaviour, the children used clues from the text to form thoughtful opinions. Our reading strategy focus continued to be "reading between the lines" as we practised finding evidence to support our answers.
To celebrate Reading Festival Week, we were delighted to have an amazing bell tent pitched on our school field. We were lucky enough to spend time inside this wonderful reading space, sharing a new book together and writing book reviews. It was a fantastic experience and a lovely way to celebrate our love of reading.
We had our very first ukulele lesson this week and it was lots of fun! The children were excited to learn about the instrument and enjoyed trying out their first chords and rhythms.
On Thursday, we enjoyed an action-packed day at Crosby Hall. We took part in an exciting adventure course which included a rope swing, climbing challenges, balancing activities and much more. We also had the opportunity to try archery before tackling the climbing wall. It was amazing to see every child challenge themselves, show resilience and encourage one another throughout the day. Most importantly, everyone had a fantastic time making memories with their classmates. What a day we had!
In Geography, we began our new topic on South America. We explored where South America is located in the world and identified the countries that make up the continent. The children were keen to share their existing knowledge and are excited to learn more about this fascinating part of the world over the coming weeks.
We are incredibly proud of the positive attitudes the children have shown this week. Well done, Year 5!
