Year 5 - Autumn 1 - Week 3

In English, we have been putting ourselves in the characters' shoes, thinking carefully about their feelings, thoughts and actions throughout a story. This helped us to develop a deeper understanding of characters and their motivations. We have also been learning how to use fronted adverbials to add detail and variety to our sentences, as well as expanded noun phrases to create more vivid descriptions. The children enjoyed writing detailed character descriptions, using powerful vocabulary to bring their characters to life.
In Reading, we have continued to focus on the novel 'Wonder'. We have explored the text through a range of retrieval and inference questions, developing our ability to find evidence and read between the lines. The children have shown great empathy towards the characters and have enjoyed discussing the important themes of kindness, friendship and acceptance.
In Maths, we have continued our work on place value. The children have practised reading, writing and representing numbers in both words and digits. We have also explored the power of 10, investigating what happens when numbers are multiplied and divided by 10, 100 and 1,000. The children used place value charts to see how digits move between columns and developed their understanding of the value of each digit within increasingly large numbers. We have also compared and ordered numbers, identifying the value of digits and explaining our reasoning using mathematical vocabulary.
In Geography, we explored the different countries that make up South America. We used maps and atlases to locate each country and learned about some of their features. The children were fascinated to discover more about this diverse continent and its varied landscapes.
In RE, we explored The Bible, learning about what it is, how it is organised and the different types of books it contains. We also learned how to find specific passages using chapters and verses, helping us to understand how Christians use the Bible in worship and daily life.
During Outdoor Learning, we took our Science learning outside and created our own to-scale solar system. The children worked collaboratively to measure distances and position the planets accurately, helping them to appreciate the vast scale of our solar system. It was a fantastic hands-on way to bring our learning to life.
We have continued to enjoy our ukulele practice, developing our confidence in playing chords and performing together. The children are showing great perseverance as they improve their musical skills each week.
One of the highlights of the week was our skipping workshop with Dan the Skipping Man. The children learned a range of new skipping skills and tricks while having lots of fun and keeping active. To finish the day, we were treated to an amazing skipping show, where Dan invited some of the children to join him and demonstrate their new skills. It was a fantastic experience and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone!
