What a fantastic week we have had in Year 5!

In RE, we explored the meaning of the word 'sacred' and discussed why the Bible is considered a sacred book by Christians. We compared sacred items from the Bible with personal items that are special to us. The children enjoyed sharing and discussing objects that are meaningful in their own lives and thinking about why some things hold such importance.

In English, we became news reporters and imagined that we had witnessed the animals' exciting trip into the fairground from 'The Midnight Fair'. We thought carefully about descriptive language and created interview questions for the characters involved. We then began planning our own trespass narratives, making sure to include the key features we have been practising: expanded noun phrases, relative clauses, fronted adverbials and powerful verbs.

During Guided Reading, we continued reading the non-fiction text Against the Odds. We explored the features of non-fiction texts and practised finding key information efficiently. We focused on important vocabulary and used the reading skill "look around, find and take" to help us locate answers within the text.

In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of large numbers by finding 10, 100 and 1,000 more or less than a given number. We have also been partitioning numbers all the way up to one million, helping us to deepen our understanding of place value.

In Geography, we used atlases to explore the countries of South America. We practised locating countries on maps and describing their positions using compass directions. The children impressed us with their growing map-reading skills and geographical knowledge.

On Friday, we visited church to lead the Harvest Service. The children were absolutely amazing and made us all very proud. They spoke confidently, sang beautifully and demonstrated excellent behaviour throughout the service. Well done year 5!

Also on Friday, we enjoyed an exciting judo session, where the children learnt new skills, showed determination and had lots of fun taking part.

In Art, we completed our space-themed box creations by adding miniature figures before photographing them. This helped create the illusion that the figures were really exploring space, resulting in some very imaginative and effective final pieces.

Attached are Year 5's spellings which will be tested 2/10/26.
