Year 5 - Autumn 1 - Week 6
Date: 7th Oct 2026 @ 5:18pm

In English, we have started our new text, 'I Go Quiet' by David Ouimet. We began by making predictions from a selection of images from the book and discussing what they revealed about the story and its characters. We then focused on using relative clauses to add extra detail about characters' feelings, writing in the first person to help us empathise with the narrator. As our understanding of the story developed, we discussed the possible reasons why the girl chooses to go quiet. To explore this further, the children took part in a hot-seating activity, with volunteers stepping into the role of Heather and answering questions about her thoughts and emotions.
We also enjoyed a lovely visit in RE from Lily from St Peter's Church. She spoke to the children about her favourite Bible stories, explained why the Bible is considered the world's best-selling book and showed us a variety of different versions of the Bible. The children listened thoughtfully and asked some excellent questions throughout the session.
In Maths, we have begun our new topic on addition and subtraction. The children have been applying a range of mental strategies and developing their confidence when adding and subtracting 4-digit numbers. The focus has been on choosing efficient methods and explaining their mathematical thinking.
Our Geography lessons have centred on the climate of South America. The children studied climate maps, identified patterns across different regions and used data to plot their own line graphs. They then compared the climates of different areas and considered how location can influence weather and temperature.
In Guided Reading, we have been enjoying our class text, 'Coming to England'. This week, we focused on explaining what impressions we gain from characters and events, using evidence from the text to support our ideas and justify our responses.
In Art, the children explored installation art and considered how artists can use their work to send a message. Linking this to environmental issues, they designed their own pieces based on caring for our planet and planned to use recycled materials as the starting point for their creations.
During Music lessons, the children have been learning different chords and developing their understanding of how they work together to create music.
The spellings are attached to this blog. They will be tested 16/10/26
