Year 5 - Autumn 1 - Week 7
Date: 15th Oct 2026 @ 5:29pm

In English, we have been planning a diary entry based on Heather, the main character in the story 'I Go Quiet'. We explored how authors create impact and emotion by using a range of writing techniques. We looked at using relative clauses, repetition, questions and modal verbs to help us express Heather's thoughts and feelings effectively and engage the reader.
In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of inverse operations and how they can be used to check the accuracy of addition and subtraction calculations. We also practised rounding numbers to estimate answers, helping us decide whether our calculations were reasonable.
In Geography, we compared Rio de Janeiro and Liverpool using a double bubble map. We identified similarities and differences between the two cities, thinking carefully about their physical and human features.
In Art, the children created their own installation artwork based on the theme of looking after the environment. After designing their pieces, they worked creatively to bring their ideas to life and share important messages about caring for our planet.
On Thursday, we visited Formby High School to practise our songs for the upcoming Remembrance event. It was wonderful to join with children from other schools and hear everyone singing together in preparation for this important occasion.
On Friday, we all wore red to stand together against racism and celebrate inclusivity, equality and respect. We spoke about the importance of treating everyone with kindness, recognising and valuing our differences, and ensuring that everyone feels welcome and respected. The children shared some thoughtful discussions about how we can all play a part in creating a fair and inclusive community.
