Year 5 - Autumn 1 - Week 8

Date: 23rd Oct 2026 @ 12:35pm

What a fantastic and busy half term we have had in Year 5!

In English, we have been writing our own diary entries. We focused on using a range of grammatical features to improve our writing, including fronted adverbials, modal verbs, powerful adjectives and relative clauses. The children worked hard to make their diary entries engaging and detailed, showing great creativity and imagination.

In Maths, we have been developing our reasoning and problem-solving skills by tackling multi-step addition and subtraction questions. We have also been comparing different addition and subtraction calculations and explaining our methods clearly.

In RE, we explored the Beatitudes from the Bible and learned about their meaning and importance for Christians. We discussed how these teachings can help guide people in their everyday lives.

In Science, we investigated the phases of the Moon and explored the movement of the Moon around the Earth. Using diagrams, we helped explain how the Moon appears to change shape throughout the month.

This week, we also became authors and illustrators, carefully selecting a piece of our English work to publish in our Author Books. The children took great pride in presenting their writing neatly and creating wonderful illustrations to accompany their work.

On Friday, we took part in Alder Hey Pyjama Day. We discussed the cause and learned why raising money and awareness for Alder Hey is so important. The children showed great enthusiasm and support for this worthwhile event.

As a special treat, we also enjoyed watching a fantastic performance of Snow White, which was full of fun, laughter and excitement!

Finally, there will be no spellings set over the half term break.

Have a wonderful half term holiday!
