Year 5- Summer 1- Week 1
Date: 16th Apr 2026 @ 8:01pm
Year 5 have had a fantastic first week back after the Easter break and have jumped straight into their learning with enthusiasm and great effort!
In English, we began our new work based on The Paperbag Prince by Colin Thompson. The children worked hard to compare and contrast the beautiful countryside with the junkyard in the valley, using subordinating conjunctions and prepositional phrases to add detail to their writing. We also explored modal verbs and discussed how they can be used to suggest possibility, obligation or certainty. Some excellent examples were shared during class discussions.
In Maths, we focused on adding and subtracting decimals, using our known number facts to support our learning. We used tens frames and number lines to help visualise our calculations, and the children showed great confidence and perseverance when tackling more challenging problems.
Our RE lessons marked the start of our new unit on significant women in the Old Testament. We began by learning about Jochebed, the mother of Moses. The children thought carefully about why she was important and enjoyed debating whether she made the right choices, showing great thoughtfulness and respect for different viewpoints.
In Science, we explored the human life cycle, identifying and recording the key features of each stage. This provided a great foundation for the more detailed learning we will be doing over the coming weeks.
Year 5 loved getting creative in Art, where we used our drawing skills to sketch houses. We carefully observed the different shapes that make up a building before adding finer details. As an extra challenge, the children were asked to draw their own houses for homework, and we have already been super impressed by the effort and quality of work brought in so far!
Our new PE focus has been a big hit, especially cricket. The children practised both close and deep catching, showing great teamwork, focus and improvement across the sessions.
During Outdoor Learning, we spent time tending to our plants and learning how to tie open and closed clove hitch knots. The children showed fantastic determination and resilience as they worked hard to master these new skills.
Finally, there was huge excitement this week with the arrival of our new Chromebooks! We are really looking forward to using these to enhance our learning across different subjects.
Well done, Year 5, for such a positive start to the term. We can’t wait to see what the coming weeks bring!
