Year 5- Summer 1- Week 4
Date: 7th May 2026 @ 9:31pm
What a fantastic and busy week we have had in Year 5!
In English, we have been exploring how authors use persuasive writing to influence their reader. We learnt how to use emotive language, speak directly to the reader, and include details and evidence to strengthen our arguments. We examined a model text together and used it to help us plan our own persuasive pieces, focusing on the important issue of landfills. The children shared some powerful ideas and we were so impressed with how thoughtfully they approached this topic.

Our Maths lessons took us outdoors for much of the week, which we absolutely loved! We practised describing turns using degrees, including clockwise and anti-clockwise directions. We then moved on to identifying and estimating different types of angles, including acute, obtuse, right angles, and reflex angles. The children showed great enthusiasm and developing confidence, especially when working practically outside.
In RE, we learnt about the story of Ruth and Naomi, focusing particularly on how Ruth showed love and loyalty to Naomi. The children had thoughtful discussions about what loyalty means and how we can show it in our own lives.
In Science, we explored the fascinating topic of gestation periods in mammals. We were amazed to discover the wide range, from the very short gestation of the American possum to the much longer gestation of an elephant. The children then chose their own mammals to research and created fantastic Top Trumps cards.
Our Outdoor Learning brought a real sense of excitement this week as we discovered that some of our radishes were ready to harvest! The children loved picking them and even more, enjoyed tasting something they had grown themselves. It was such a special moment to see their pride and enthusiasm.

Finally, on Friday, we celebrated the incredible life and work of David Attenborough as he turned 100 years old. We watched a video about his achievements and made collages on our iPads to celebrate his birthday.
We are so proud of everyone's hard work and enthusiasm this week. Keep it up, Year 5!
