Year 5- Summer 2- Week 4
Date: 25th Jun 2026 @ 9:44pm
Year 5 have truly shown resilience this week as we survived the hottest week of the year, with a little help from some ice pops!
In English, we continued exploring The Hunter. The children took part in engaging role play, stepping into the shoes of different characters and discussing events from a range of perspectives. We also built on our use of ambitious vocabulary, writing sentences that included relative clauses. To bring our learning together, the class wrote thoughtful recounts describing Jamina’s first meeting with the baby elephant, capturing both emotion and detail beautifully.
In Maths, we focused on measure, converting between kilometres and metres, kilograms and grams, and litres and millilitres. The children tackled a range of problems, applying their knowledge of decimals and fractions to reason and solve challenges with increasing confidence.
In RE, we explored prayers said after the loss of a loved one. The children showed great maturity and respect as they made thoughtful inferences about Christian beliefs and how faith can provide comfort during difficult times.
Our Science lesson saw us becoming investigators! Using Newton metres, we explored friction by measuring the force needed to move a shoe across different surfaces. The children enjoyed predicting, testing and comparing their results, developing a clear understanding of how friction can vary.
In History, we learned about the significant changes in medical care during the Victorian era. We focused on the contributions of Florence Nightingale, as well as the development of anaesthetics and antiseptics. The class engaged in thoughtful discussion, sharing their ideas about which development had the greatest impact on improving healthcare.
Following on from last week’s potato harvest, excitement was high as we turned our home-grown potatoes into chips! They tasted even better knowing we had grown them ourselves.

To finish, we had a fantastic day at Go Outside, doing obstacle courses, building shelters, roasting marshmallows and cooling off on the slip and slide. It was the perfect way to round off a busy and successful week.
Well done, Year 5!
