Year 5- Summer 2- Week 5

Date: 2nd Jul 2026 @ 4:06pm

It has been another busy and exciting week in Year 5!

In English, we finished reading our class text, The Hunter. We discussed how the main character’s views changed throughout the story and explored how events and experiences influenced their thinking. Using the structure of the story as inspiration, we then began planning our own narratives and are looking forward to writing them next week.

In Maths, we started our new topic on measurement. We began with some practical measuring activities outside, using millimetres, centimetres and metres to measure a variety of objects. We then learned how to convert between these units by multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1,000. The children applied their new skills to tackle some challenging reasoning and problem-solving questions.

In Science, we analysed the results from our investigations last week by creating graphs to present our data. We carefully considered which scales would be most appropriate and used rulers to ensure our graphs were neat and accurate. It was great to see the children combining their scientific and mathematical skills to present their findings clearly.

History came alive on Wednesday as we stepped back in time to experience a Victorian school day! The children took part in a role-play lesson where they wrote lines using chalk, sat with boys and girls separated and even had to remember not to use their left hands. We learned about the strict punishments that Victorian children faced, including the cane and the dreaded dunce cap. Fortunately, playtime was much more enjoyable, as we tried traditional Victorian games such as hopscotch, hoop rolling and skipping. There was lots of laughter and fun throughout the afternoon! Afterwards, we used our experiences to write diary entries describing our ‘dreadful’ time at Victorian school.

We also took part in a very important water safety lesson. The children learned about the dangers of water, the different beach safety flags to look out for and what to do if they find themselves, or someone else, in difficulty in the water. They approached the session thoughtfully and sensibly, creating informative posters to take home and share with their families.

There has been plenty of Outdoor Learning this week too. On Thursday, we were delighted to see just how much our vegetables have grown. Our courgettes are getting bigger and bigger, and we were thrilled by the number of beans now growing in our garden. We are looking forward to harvesting and tasting them very soon! On Friday, we tested out our new grill by toasting delicious toast and crumpets over the campfire, which was a fantastic way to end the week.
