What a brilliant first full week we’ve had in Year 6!

In Maths, we’ve been busy exploring place value, strengthening our understanding through lots of fun games and challenges. A particular highlight was the fiercely competitive ‘Nice or Nasty’ place value game, where Team Year 6 took on Team Mr McCabe. After plenty of tactical decisions and a very dramatic finish, Team Y6 snatched the victory!

In English, we began exploring our new focus book, One Day by Michael Rosen. We started by making predictions about the text before becoming reading detectives, using clues from the words and illustrations to infer meaning and explore ideas. We then put our creativity to work, using personification to produce some fantastic poems of our own!

We’ve also been celebrating all things books as part of our Reading Festival! A fantastic bell tent was set up in school, giving each class the opportunity to step inside, get cosy and enjoy some special reading time together. We also loved visiting our Book Fair, where there were plenty of exciting titles to discover. To top off a brilliant week of reading, we started our new class book, The Wild Robot Escapes, following on perfectly from watching the original The Wild Robot film together last week. We can’t wait to discover what happens next in Roz’s adventure!

In PE, we’ve had an action-packed week! We learned how to play Strategic, an exciting tactical invasion and strategy game that challenged us to think carefully, work as a team and outsmart our opponents. We also enjoyed our Judo session, developing our balance, coordination and control while learning new skills and techniques.

An absolute highlight of our week was officially meeting our Reception buddies for the very first time! As Year 6 pupils, this is such a special responsibility and we were incredibly excited to hand-deliver the buddy letters we had worked so hard to create. These have now made their way home in Reception book bags for families to enjoy! It was wonderful to see the smiles, excitement and new friendships already beginning to blossom.

Everyone has worked incredibly hard throughout the week, shown fantastic enthusiasm and really settled into the new school year. It’s been wonderful to see such a positive start. Keep it up, Year 6. We also can’t wait to see where this beautiful buddy journey takes us and what the rest of Year 6 has in store!
