After an action-packed few days at Robinwood last week, Year 6 returned to school on Monday with plenty of stories to share and some fantastic memories made together. It was wonderful to see the children embrace every challenge and opportunity during the residential, supporting and encouraging one another throughout. Back in the classroom, they have settled quickly into the week and continued to approach their learning with great enthusiasm and determination. A brilliant week all round!

Not content with just one adventure, Year 6 were soon back on the road again as we embarked on our very own ‘Magical Mystery Tour’! Staying a little closer to home this time, we explored the culture and musical heritage of our fantastic city through one of the most famous bands in the world…The Beatles! With our very own tour guide on board, we visited some of the iconic locations that inspired their music and songwriting, including Penny Lane, Strawberry Field as well as the Beatles’ childhood homes. We then headed into the city centre and down to Mathew Street, where we visited the world-famous Cavern Club and enjoyed our lunch in this legendary venue. Such a fantastic opportunity to bring Liverpool’s incredible musical history to life!

In Maths this week, our learning has included developing our understanding of rounding. We put our skills to the test with a competitive two-player game, taking turns to reveal numbers, rounding them and checking our partner’s answers. We then became cyber-security agents when an internet security breach put secret information at risk! The children had to crack the security codes by accurately rounding a series of ‘IP numbers’, applying their rounding skills to increasingly large numbers. A really fun and engaging way to build both accuracy and confidence with rounding!

In Writing, we have continued our work based on One Day by Michael Rosen, following the completion of this powerful and thought-provoking book. As the culmination of our learning, the children have been writing in role as Eugène, creating a diary entry that reflects on his experiences during the Second World War. We have focused on capturing his thoughts and emotions through carefully chosen vocabulary, creating an authentic diary voice and using a range of sentence structures and punctuation for effect. The children have drawn thoughtfully on their understanding of the text and approached the subject matter with great maturity. This will build to writing up our final drafts within our Author Books next week.

From the challenges and adventures of Robinwood to getting straight back into learning, alongside exploring the musical history of our city’s greatest band, the children have shown fantastic enthusiasm, resilience and effort throughout. We hope everyone has a well-earned rest this weekend, ready for another busy week ahead!

Reminders:

-Maths and English homework has been set via the SATs Companion platform and is due to be completed on or before next Wednesday (7th). Please encourage children to watch the short support videos included with tasks, where available, particularly in Maths, as these provide helpful explanations and worked examples. If your child experiences any difficulties with their homework, please encourage them to speak to a member of the Year 6 team so that we can support them.

-Weeky spellings have been attached to this blog and the children will be tested next Friday (9th).

-It is also really important that the children are encouraged to read daily at home and with an adult if possible. If you are struggling with book choices, please refer to the recommendations listed on our ‘Learning at Home’ page, or let us know and we will be able to offer suggestions.
