Another busy week in Year 6 as October rumbles on! The children have continued to work hard across the curriculum, showing great enthusiasm, determination and a positive attitude towards their learning. With plenty happening both in and out of the classroom, the weeks certainly seem to be flying by as we make our way towards half-term!

In English, we have brought our work on One Day by Michael Rosen to a thoughtful and moving conclusion. The children have carefully written up their final diary entries in role as Eugène within their Author Books, drawing together all the work we have done on capturing his thoughts, feelings and experiences during the Second World War. Their writing has been complemented by some beautiful, poignant and well-considered illustrations, which reflect a genuine understanding of the text and its historical context. The finished pieces are something the children can be extremely proud of, demonstrating not only their developing skills as writers and artists but also the sensitivity and maturity with which they have approached such an important subject.

In Maths, Year 6 have been developing their understanding of negative numbers, exploring how to order, compare and calculate with numbers above and below zero. We then put these skills to the test with a challenging real-life problem-solving activity: Balance the Books. The children took on the role of financial advisers for the Okoye family, carefully tracking a month's worth of transactions, including wages, household bills, holiday payments and unexpected expenses. The children had to calculate the ever changing balance and navigate the tricky moments when the account dipped into negative figures! A fantastic opportunity to apply their mathematical knowledge in a meaningful context!

In Science, we have been exploring the fascinating diversity of living things, learning about the different kingdoms of life and how scientists classify organisms according to their characteristics. Building on this knowledge, the children revisited the seven life processes using the helpful acronym MRS GREN (Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion and Nutrition). They then put their scientific understanding and creativity to work by designing their own colourful and informative MRS GREN posters, carefully explaining and illustrating each of the seven processes.

We've also been busy practising a very special song in preparation for our upcoming Buddy Afternoon Tea for Reception parents next week! The children are really looking forward to spending some quality time with their Reception buddies and making the afternoon a memorable occasion. It has been lovely to see the enthusiasm and care they have put into their rehearsals and we can't wait to share their performance with everyone.

On Friday, we marked Hello Yellow Day by starting our morning with some mindful colouring, taking a little time to relax and focus on our wellbeing. To finish the week, we enjoyed a mindful walk around the school field alongside our Reception buddies. It was a lovely opportunity to slow down, enjoy the fresh air and spend some quality time together!

With another two weeks to go until half-term, there is still plenty to look forward to in Year 6! It has been wonderful to see the children continuing to approach their learning with such enthusiasm, maturity and determination, and they should be very proud of everything they are achieving. We hope everyone enjoys a lovely, relaxing weekend, and we look forward to another exciting week ahead, especially our much-anticipated Buddy Afternoon Tea!

Reminders:

-Maths and English homework continues to be set via the SATs Companion platform and is due to be completed on or before next Wednesday (14th). Please encourage children to watch the short support videos included with tasks, where available, particularly in Maths, as these provide helpful explanations and worked examples. If your child experiences any difficulties with their homework, please encourage them to speak to a member of the Year 6 team so that we can support them.

-Weeky spellings have been attached to this blog and the children will be tested next Friday (16th).

-It is also really important that the children are encouraged to read daily at home and with an adult if possible. If you are struggling with book choices, please refer to the recommendations listed on our ‘Learning at Home’ page, or let us know and we will be able to offer suggestions.
