Year 6 - Autumn 1 - Week 8
Date: 19th Oct 2026 @ 12:13pm

What a fantastic way to round off the half term in Year 6! It’s hard to believe just how much we’ve packed into this half term. From residentials to pantomimes and everything in between, Year 6 have been working hard, learning lots and having fun along the way!
We kicked off the week by coming together in our house teams, with children from Year 1 all the way up to Year 6 joining forces to learn their very own house chants! There was plenty of enthusiasm as everyone practised the words, actions and routines, ready to cheer their houses on at our future house events, which will take place every half term. It was brilliant to see the children working together across the different year groups and showing such fantastic team spirit!
In RE, Year 6 continued exploring our topic, Life as a Journey, by investigating the important milestones and rites of passage that people experience throughout their lives. We began by sorting different life events into religious, secular or potentially both, which sparked some fantastic discussions and thoughtful debates! We then focused on Christianity, exploring the significance of Baptism, Holy Communion, Confirmation and Marriage, and considering why these ceremonies are so meaningful to believers. The children demonstrated their understanding by creating illustrated double-page spreads in their RE books, explaining the symbolism and importance of each ceremony. It was wonderful to see such mature thinking and thoughtful reflections on how faith can shape a person's journey through life!
In Maths, Year 6 have been practising dividing and multiplying fractions, applying our knowledge of equivalent fractions, simplifying answers and working confidently with mixed numbers. As the week progressed, we moved on to problem-solving challenges, where the children had to think carefully about which operations to use and how to apply their skills in different contexts.
In English, Year 6 have been exploring the important theme of equality, linking our learning to Hate Crime Awareness Week and Black History Month. We began by learning about Martin Luther King Jr. and his powerful message of equality, justice and standing up for what is right. We then explored a range of poems that tackled similar themes, discussing how poets use language to express powerful messages and inspire change. Inspired by our learning, the children were challenged to write their own poems centred around equality, using thoughtful vocabulary and poetic techniques to share their own messages of fairness, respect and inclusion.
In History, the children had the opportunity to explore a fascinating collection of wartime artefacts, including gas masks, helmets, newspapers, ration books and historical documents. They thoroughly enjoyed examining the different items, asking thoughtful questions and discovering what everyday life was like during the war. A fantastic hands-on experience that really helped bring our history learning to life!
To finish the week, we were treated to a pantomime in our school hall on Friday! What a wonderful and fun way to end a busy and exciting half term. We hope everyone has a lovely, well-deserved break!
Reminders:
-No formal Maths and English homework has been set over the half-term break. However, SATs Companion remains available for all children who would like to continue practising their Maths and English skills. There are plenty of activities available. The CGP revision books handed out at parent-teacher meetings are also a useful resource for anyone wishing to do a little extra practice.
-No new spellings will be set during the half term break. If the children would like some additional practise, I’ve attached the Year 5/6 Statutory Spellings lists to this blog. These are key words that we’ll all be working on throughout Year 6, with the aim of spelling as many as possible with confidence by the end of the year. The children could pick a few tricky ones, test themselves, or try writing them in sentences.
-The Team TSP Firework Event will take place on Wednesday 5th November.
