Reception - Autumn 1 - Week 8
Date: 23rd Oct 2024 @ 3:34pm
What a busy and exciting half term we have had in Reception class. It has been so lovely to see how well the children have settled in and been having lots of fun with their friends. We started the year with our ‘All about me’ topic where the children had the chance to explore their individuality and what makes them unique. We read a wonderful book together called ‘Our class is a family’, which helped us to understand the importance of friendship, kindness and supporting one another.
- One of the children’s favourite events this term was the teddy bear sleepover. After reading the story ‘Come to school too blue kangaroo’ we decided to invite our own teddies to come in to have some fun. Everyone brought their own teddies to school we made them sleep masks and tucked them up in bed. The next morning, the children found that their teddies had been in all sorts of fun places around the room. We had so much fun talking to our friends about what our cuddly friends had been up to.
- One of our highlights this term was when the children met their Year 6 buddies. This special friendship will continue throughout the year as we have more fun with them. The Year 6 children have been great role models, helping the children feel even more settled in school.
- We have been busy starting our phonics lessons, focussing on the initial set 1 sounds and building their early reading skills. The children have showed great enthusiasm for learning sounds, practicing their letter formation and their oral blending. It has been so lovely to see lots of the children transfer their skills into their independent writing.
- As the weather changes, we’ve embraced the season with the start of ‘Autumn’ topic, learning about the changes we see around us as the days get cooler. We’ve discussed the colours of the leaves, the chill in the air and the shorter days.
- The children have loved exploring the lives of owls such as what they eat, when they sleep and their different features. We then read a story called ‘Owl babies’ and explored the very normal feelings around separation and talked about worries when the children are in school and they miss their loved ones. We talked about how they will always come back to see us and find out about the lovely day we have had.
- This half term in RE, the children have been learning about how special and unique they are. We started by reading a story called ‘I am special’ which helped us talk about what makes each of us unique. After that we moved onto our Harvest topic, learning about what Harvest time is and why it is important. We looked at the globe to see where different foods come from around the word and the children had the chance to taste fruits from different countries. We then visited church, where we discussed the importance of helping those who don’t have enough food.
- In Maths the children have been busy exploring a variety of key concepts through practical activities. We started by looking at matching, sorting and comparing, size and measure and a focus on the numbers 1,2 and 3. The children have been looking at 1 more, 1 less patterns and the composition of these numbers.
What a fantastic half term we have had! We hope you all have a lovely break and see you all soon!
