Welcome back after what we are sure was a busy but well-deserved break!

In phonics, the children have been revisiting previously learned sounds and continuing to practise blending using Fred Talk. Many enjoyed using magnetic letters to build CVC words — a fun and interactive way to reinforce their learning. A big thank you for all the support over the half-term break — it’s clear that lots of hard work has gone on at home, and we can really see the progress in the classroom.

In maths, we’ve been exploring the numbers 1, 2 and 3. The children have been learning to subitise — recognising small quantities without counting — and have matched different representations of numbers to the correct numeral cards. We’ve also discussed how counting involves adding one more each time, helping to build a strong foundation for number sense.

We also spent time learning about All Saints’ Day, following on from All Hallows’ Day. The children took part in a fun activity where they were presented with two identical-looking bowls and tasted what was inside — some were pleasantly surprised, while others got a not-so-nice surprise! This led to a lovely discussion about how, just like everyone else, we experience both good and bad things in life, and how God guides us through them all.

To end the week, we learned about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot. The children shared their own experiences of watching fireworks and talked about family traditions, such as eating toffee apples. We also discussed the importance of firework safety when attending displays. The children created beautiful firework paintings and enjoyed making a tasty firework-themed breadstick sparkler treat!

What a very busy and excitable week we have had in Reception! Have a lovely weekend and we can’t wait to see what adventures take place next week.
